Design Legends ("DL") had the distinct honour to interview legendary designer Poovakorn Watcharaphongphiphat ("PW") for their original perspective and innovative approach to design as well as their creative lifestyle, we are very pleased to share our interview with our distinguished readers.
PW : I studied Communication Design at MUIC, where I developed a deep understanding of visual design principles and how to use design as a tool for communication. During my studies, I focused on various aspects of design, including branding, typography, and digital design, all while being influenced by my cultural background in Thailand. My education provided me with both the technical skills and the conceptual framework to approach design challenges creatively and effectively. I believe my growth as a designer came not only from the formal education but also from real-world experiences, such as my work at Capella Bangkok, where I could apply my skills and explore new materials and styles.
PW : What motivates me to design is the power of visual communication and its ability to evoke emotions, solve problems, and connect people. I became a designer because I saw design as a way to express ideas, tell stories, and make a tangible impact on how people experience the world around them. My journey into design wasn’t because I was born with a natural gift, but rather through a deep curiosity and appreciation for the beauty in everyday life. Over time, I realized that design could be a tool for positive change, and that realization fueled my passion to pursue it further.
PW : I chose to become a designer. While I didn’t initially have a natural gift for it, my growing understanding and appreciation of visual communication led me to pursue design. Over time, I discovered how powerful design can be in solving problems, expressing ideas, and influencing people’s experiences. It became a path I was passionate about, and I felt driven to develop my skills and explore its potential. Design felt like a natural way to channel my creativity and make a meaningful impact.
PW : I primarily design branding, visual communication, and product designs, focusing on creating meaningful experiences through aesthetics and functionality. I enjoy working on projects that blend culture, creativity, and purpose. In the future, I’d like to design more projects that integrate sustainability and social impact, exploring how design can contribute to a better world. I’m also interested in expanding into interactive and digital design, where I can further explore the user experience and how design can connect people in meaningful ways.
PW : To become a successful designer, young designers should stay curious and keep learning, always being open to new techniques, tools, and trends. They should work on real-world projects to build their skills and portfolio, and embrace challenges as opportunities to grow creatively. Developing a unique design style and being patient and persistent are essential for standing out. Networking and collaborating with other creatives helps expand knowledge and opportunities. Ultimately, staying passionate about design will drive continuous improvement and success.
PW : A good designer creates visually appealing and functional work, but a great designer goes beyond that by infusing their designs with purpose, innovation, and emotional impact. Great designers have a deep understanding of the user experience, continuously seek improvement, and are able to solve complex problems with creativity and efficiency. They push boundaries, stay curious, and are not afraid to take risks. Additionally, great designers have a unique style or perspective that makes their work instantly recognizable and deeply resonant with their audience.
PW : A really good design is one that effectively combines aesthetics, functionality, and user experience. It should solve a problem or meet a need in a simple, innovative way while being visually engaging and easy to understand. Good design is also timeless, adaptable, and resonates emotionally with the audience.
PW : The value of good design lies in its ability to solve problems, communicate effectively, and create positive experiences. It goes beyond aesthetics by improving functionality, enhancing user experience, and driving engagement. Good design can elevate a brand, influence behavior, and even inspire change in society. It can make complex ideas easier to understand, streamline processes, and increase efficiency. Investing in good design is essential because it helps businesses stand out, build trust, and create lasting connections with their audience. It can improve the overall quality of a product or service, making it more desirable and accessible. For individuals, good design enhances daily life by making products more intuitive, functional, and enjoyable to use. In short, good design is an investment that yields long-term benefits in both personal and professional contexts.
PW : If I had the time, I would design for causes that align with my values, particularly focusing on projects that blend culture, sustainability, and social impact. One area I’m passionate about is designing solutions that promote environmental awareness, such as sustainable packaging or eco-friendly products. I’d also love to design for social organizations, creating campaigns or visual identities that advocate for important causes like education, mental health, and equality.
PW : A dream project I haven’t yet had time to realize is a cultural design initiative that blends traditional Thai craftsmanship with modern design techniques to create sustainable, functional products. I envision a collection of products—whether in fashion, home goods, or even branding—that celebrates Thai heritage while embracing contemporary aesthetics and eco-friendly materials. This project would not only showcase the rich cultural history of Thailand but also raise awareness about sustainability in design.
PW : My secret recipe for success in design is a combination of passion, curiosity, and purpose. The secret ingredient is a deep understanding and connection to the culture and context of the design I’m creating. I believe that great design starts with a meaningful story and an emotional connection, whether it’s to the brand, the user, or the message being communicated.
