LEGENDARY INTERVIEW

Design Legends ("DL") had the distinct honour to interview legendary designer Daniel de de Burgos Bengoechea ("DDDBB") for their original perspective and innovative approach to design as well as their creative lifestyle, we are very pleased to share our interview with our distinguished readers.

DL: Could you please tell us a bit about your design background and education?

DDDBB : I am not an experienced designer since it is my first project, I have become a designer accidentally. My product really is an invention with an attractive and different design

DL: What motivates you to design in general, why did you become a designer?

DDDBB : When I was in a low mood for personal reasons, design helped me stay positive and focus on my project.

DL: Did you choose to become a designer, or you were forced to become one?

DDDBB : It came up completely unexpectedly.

DL: What do you design, what type of designs do you wish to design more of?

DDDBB : I like those designs that allow people to improve their health.

DL: What should young designers do to become a design legend like you?

DDDBB : Even though they fail, they should never stop trying. Perseverance and consistency make the difference.

DL: What distinguishes between a good designer and a great designer?

DDDBB : For me, a great designer is someone who makes difficult things easy, with existing elements they are able to create something without resorting to new technologies.

DL: What makes a good design a really good design, how do you evaluate good design?

DDDBB : When a design combines functionality, ergonomics and aesthetics we can consider it to be a good design.

DL: What is the value of good design? Why should everyone invest in good design?

DDDBB : A good design makes everyday activities easier.

DL: What would you design and who would you design for if you had the time?

DDDBB : I am passionate about the fitness world. The Italian brand technogym has an aesthetic that I like.

DL: What is the dream project you haven’t yet had time to realize?

DDDBB : The dream project is always the next one

DL: What is your secret recipe of success in design, what is your secret ingredient?

DDDBB : One's own originality, one should never abandon one's personal essence.

DL: Who are some other design masters and legends you get inspired from?

DDDBB : A great inspiration for me has been the Argentine car builder based in Italy, Horacio Pagani.I was fascinated by his personal story.

DL: What are your favorite designs by other designers, why do you like them?

DDDBB : I don't have a favorite designer, I try to give my personal touch to the ideas I like. I have always liked the sobriety and elegance of Italian fashion designers like Armani and Versace.

DL: What is your greatest design, which aspects of that design makes you think it is great?

DDDBB : I only have one design. Genius for me lies in making the difficult easy. My design manages to compact the characteristics of countless devices into one accompanied by an attractive aesthetic.

DL: How could people improve themselves to be better designers, what did you do?

DDDBB : I believe that to be a good designer you have to be creative, persevering, restless and have good self-esteem.

DL: If you hadn’t become a designer, what would you have done?

DDDBB : I am not a typical designer since I work as a Physical Education teacher. I could say that I am an atypical designer with a loose verse.

DL: How do you define design, what is design for you?

DDDBB : Design is transforming a dream into an illusion and later into an idea, to give it shape with a design.

DL: Who helped you to reach these heights, who was your biggest supporter?

DDDBB : I didn't have any special support, I let myself be guided by my intuition. I had family moral support but when everything was very evolved.

DL: What helped you to become a great designer?

DDDBB : Nobody, it emerged in a natural way. It was a surprise for my whole family.

DL: What were the obstacles you faced before becoming a design master?

DDDBB : My biggest obstacle has probably been inexperience but I have managed to overcome it thanks to passion and perseverance.

DL: How do you think designers should present their work?

DDDBB : As a unique, multifunctional and aesthetic product for everyone. Not in vain is it called "the Swiss army knife of sports."

DL: What’s your next design project, what should we expect from you in future?

DDDBB : I have different ideas but I need to organize them. I have no idea what the future holds for me.

DL: What’s your ultimate goal as a designer?

DDDBB : Facilitate and improve people's lives.

DL: What people expect from an esteemed designer such as yourself?

DDDBB : A quality design.

DL: How does design help create a better society?

DDDBB : Solving problems and facilitating and improving people's lives.

DL: What are you currently working on that you are especially excited about?

DDDBB : I am enthusiastic about the areas of fitness, health and home or outdoor furniture.

DL: Which design projects gave you the most satisfaction, why?

DDDBB : I have only made one.

DL: What would you like to see changed in design industry in the coming years?

DDDBB : I would like the talent and ingenuity of human beings to predominate over technology.

DL: Where do you think the design field is headed next?

DDDBB : I think that technology is invading design, I liked the design of yesteryear better. When someone with 3 wood is able to see a chair it is something fascinating.

DL: How long does it take you to finalize a design project?

DDDBB : My project from when I started the sketches to the realization of the prototype will have lasted 10 months.

DL: When you have a new design project, where do you start?

DDDBB : The first thing is to write down the idea so that I don't forget. Afterwards, I search and find out if anything has been found and finally I look for the perfect combination of shapes and materials.

DL: What is your life motto as a designer?

DDDBB : Dream, then design

DL: Do you think design sets the trends or trends set the designs?

DDDBB : They are two interconnected aspects.

DL: What is the role of technology when you design?

DDDBB : Minimum, I like the traditional design better.The magic is in doing something great with few resources

DL: What kind of design software and equipment do you use in your work?

DDDBB : My designs start with a pencil and a piece of paper, I don't use software.

DL: What is the role of the color, materials and ambient in design?

DDDBB : Without a doubt, they are important aspects that condition a design for better or worse, which is why it is important to find a balance of the 3 aspects.

DL: What do you wish people to ask about your design?

DDDBB : What benefits does your design provide?

DL: When you see a new great design or product what comes into your mind?

DDDBB : I compare it with something that already exists and see if the improvement is notable and from there I evaluate the excellence of the design.

DL: Who is your ideal design partner? Do you believe in co-design?

DDDBB : I design individually, my training is self-taught, it must be a natural talent. I haven't had any co-design experience yet.

DL: Which people you interacted had the most influence on your design?

DDDBB : I have carried out the entire process individually, I have not had help from other people.

DL: Which books you read had the most effect on your design?

DDDBB : The book that has inspired me the most is not directly related to design, it is more related to personal improvement and is titled "Become unstoppable" (Rubén González)

DL: How did you develop your skills as a master designer?

DDDBB : I have not carried out any design studies, I consider that it has been a hidden talent that I have now just found

DL: Irrelative of time and space, who you would want to meet, talk and discuss with?

DDDBB : I would like to be able to talk to fitness companies like Technogym and Nohrd since I consider their designs to be sophisticated and elegant, having aesthetic similarities with my design. Another company I would like to talk to is Freeletics since I believe that my product would be the perfect device for developing your exercises.

DL: How do you feel about all the awards and recognition you had, is it hard to be famous?

DDDBB : I do not consider myself famous, however, I have appeared in magazines and television. One must always remember where one comes from.

DL: What is your favorite color, place, food, season, thing and brand?

DDDBB : My favorite color is yellow since I consider it to be the brightest. My favorite place, my city, Bilbao. My favorite food is cod pil-pil. My favorite season is spring. My favorite brand Armani.

DL: Please tell us a little memoir, a funny thing you had experienced as a designer?

DDDBB : The beginnings of my project were very humble. The design began with a pencil and a piece of paper and later I did the testing with cardboard that I cut out to adjust the measurements of the device and make sure that the ergonomics of the product were correct.

DL: What makes your day great as a designer, how do you motivate yourself?

DDDBB : That I have managed to synthesize the functionalities of many devices into one using design as the axis, achieving a multifunctional, aesthetic and simple product.

DL: When you were a little child, was it obvious that you would become a great designer?

DDDBB : No, it didn't even cross my mind. I have always had ideas but I never executed them because I thought that everyone would have those ideas, that is, possibly I was not able to see my talent.

DL: What do you think about future; what do you see will happen in thousand years from now?

DDDBB : I believe that the axis of everything should be the emotions, values ​​and integrity of the human being. Currently, confrontation is sought more than harmony between human beings.

DL: Please tell us anything you wish your fans to know about you, your design and anything else?

DDDBB : I was quite talented in football but probably due to lack of perseverance and perseverance and not believing in myself, I didn't amount to anything. That is why my advice is to always believe in themselves since they will already have people within their close circle who will not believe in them. What makes the difference is not talent but perseverance, you never have to give up.
