Design Legends ("DL") had the distinct honour to interview legendary designer Ai Ling Tian ("ALT") for their original perspective and innovative approach to design as well as their creative lifestyle, we are very pleased to share our interview with our distinguished readers.

DL: Could you please tell us a bit about your design background and education?

ALT : Since I graduated from Sichuan Academy of Fine Arts in 1999, I began to work as an interior designer. During this period, I have been learning and accumulating supplementary professional knowledge. I am also studying related majors of Milan Institute of technology.

DL: What motivates you to design in general, why did you become a designer?

ALT : The opportunity to love beautiful things made me become a designer.

DL: Did you choose to become a designer, or you were forced to become one?

ALT : Active selection

DL: What do you design, what type of designs do you wish to design more of?

ALT : Natural and charming

DL: What should young designers do to become a design legend like you?

ALT : Love, keep learning for love.

DL: What distinguishes between a good designer and a great designer?

ALT : From the individual to the meeting, we should combine environmental optimization, design from capital saving and environmental protection, and design with the proposition of benefiting others and caring for nature.

DL: What makes a good design a really good design, how do you evaluate good design?

ALT : Have the beauty of emotional resonance or creative art.

DL: What is the value of good design? Why should everyone invest in good design?

ALT : Good design has the value of solving problems and arousing people's sense of experience, because good design benefits human beings.

DL: What would you design and who would you design for if you had the time?

ALT : Design specific furniture products for specific groups that are not concerned

DL: What is the dream project you haven’t yet had time to realize?

ALT : Design for the public

DL: Who are some other design masters and legends you get inspired from?

ALT : Too many, every designer deserves respect.

DL: What is your greatest design, which aspects of that design makes you think it is great?

ALT : Works praised by customers, because the real occupant is herself.

DL: How could people improve themselves to be better designers, what did you do?

ALT : Be good at finding problems, solving and improving them.

DL: How do you define design, what is design for you?

ALT : Introduce the elements of ancient classics into contemporary space, express artistry by means of contradiction collision, combine the life attitude of traditional and modern philosophy, collide with new content belonging to future interest, redefine classics, and express dreamlike emotional space with appeal.

DL: Who helped you to reach these heights, who was your biggest supporter?

ALT : Every customer friend is a guide.

DL: What’s your ultimate goal as a designer?

ALT : Not for reputation, only for the best consideration of customers and friends.

DL: What are you currently working on that you are especially excited about?

ALT : Design and explore unknown areas.

DL: Which design projects gave you the most satisfaction, why?

ALT : The Chinese style works in the competition will show our country more to foreign friends.

DL: Where do you think the design field is headed next?

ALT : From the individual to the meeting, we should combine environmental optimization, design from capital saving and environmental protection, and design with the proposition of benefiting others and caring for nature.

DL: When you have a new design project, where do you start?

ALT : Start with the needs and preferences of your customers and friends.

DL: What is your life motto as a designer?

ALT : How is home? I think it's a happy look to your heart! It's not simply the same as the popular and the same style. Find yourself and your favorite life state.

DL: Do you think design sets the trends or trends set the designs?

ALT : the former

DL: What kind of design software and equipment do you use in your work?

ALT : 3D Studio Max and Management Software Computer Aided Design,MS-CAD.

DL: What is the role of the color, materials and ambient in design?

ALT : Help the work to complete better.

DL: When you see a new great design or product what comes into your mind?

ALT : Can it be applied to my works。If it was me, what would I do。

DL: Who is your ideal design partner? Do you believe in co-design?

ALT : People who can attract me。Win win cooperation

DL: Which people you interacted had the most influence on your design?

ALT : People who can fully know what they like

DL: Which books you read had the most effect on your design?

ALT : Disjunction

DL: Irrelative of time and space, who you would want to meet, talk and discuss with?

ALT : Ancient Chinese craftsmen want to explore learning technology, develop and continue to the present society.

DL: How do you feel about all the awards and recognition you had, is it hard to be famous?

ALT : I'm very happy. I will try my best to break through myself.

DL: What is your favorite color, place, food, season, thing and brand?

ALT : Spring, colorful.

DL: What makes your day great as a designer, how do you motivate yourself?

ALT : Love, keep learning for love. When there are new challenges and expect to see results.
