LEGENDARY INTERVIEW

Design Legends ("DL") had the distinct honour to interview legendary designer Yuri Miranda de Araujo Cabral de Matos ("YMDACDM") for their original perspective and innovative approach to design as well as their creative lifestyle, we are very pleased to share our interview with our distinguished readers.

DL: Could you please tell us a bit about your design background and education?

YMDACDM : I'm graduated in Advertising and I've been working with Art Direction and Design for more than 13 years now.

DL: What motivates you to design in general, why did you become a designer?

YMDACDM : I've always been passionate about visuals, colors, art and computers. So I've picked a profession that sums all os this things.

DL: What do you design, what type of designs do you wish to design more of?

YMDACDM : Being and Art Director makes you design all kinds os stuff. But what a I really enjoy are logos.

DL: What should young designers do to become a design legend like you?

YMDACDM : Please, I'm no legend. Just everything you can on your craft. Things will happen naturally. And know how to perceive the right opportunities.

DL: What distinguishes between a good designer and a great designer?

YMDACDM : that extra mile and a bit of luck.

DL: What makes a good design a really good design, how do you evaluate good design?

YMDACDM : When it pleases the client and the creator, without forgetting it's purpose. Context, aesthetic refining and project objective.

DL: What would you design and who would you design for if you had the time?

YMDACDM : I would like to conduct a great redesign of a big global brand.

DL: What is the dream project you haven’t yet had time to realize?

YMDACDM : See question 9.

DL: Who are some other design masters and legends you get inspired from?

YMDACDM : Saul Bass, Alexandre Wollner, Stefan Sagmeister, Jonathan Ive.

DL: What is your greatest design, which aspects of that design makes you think it is great?

YMDACDM : Empório Pascoto Rebrand, a sales network of natural products in Brazil.In it, I was really satisfied with the quality and the way we translate the essence of the business into the whole visual identity respecting the heritage.

DL: How could people improve themselves to be better designers, what did you do?

YMDACDM : Never stop learning. Courses, Youtube, Tutorials, Networking.

DL: If you hadn’t become a designer, what would you have done?

YMDACDM : F1 Driver. I'm a big Ayrton Senna's fan.

DL: How do you define design, what is design for you?

YMDACDM : Design is purpose. Design is the bridge between the human and the material. It attributes characteristics to things that we can identify ourselves, it makes everything more palatable and useful.

DL: Which design projects gave you the most satisfaction, why?

YMDACDM : Without doubt, visual identities. But I also like book covers, music albums.

DL: What is your life motto as a designer?

YMDACDM : Charles Eames said: "The details are not the details. They make the design."

DL: Do you think design sets the trends or trends set the designs?

YMDACDM : It can be both ways!

DL: What is the role of technology when you design?

YMDACDM : A great role. It helps me a lot.

DL: How did you develop your skills as a master designer?

YMDACDM : Practicing my craft.

DL: Irrelative of time and space, who you would want to meet, talk and discuss with?

YMDACDM : Einstein, Senna, Jesus.

DL: How do you feel about all the awards and recognition you had, is it hard to be famous?

YMDACDM : It's amazing and I'm surprised.

DL: What is your favorite color, place, food, season, thing and brand?

YMDACDM : Yellow, São Paulo, Pizza, Summer, my car and many brands.

DL: What makes your day great as a designer, how do you motivate yourself?

YMDACDM : going to bed and knowing I have delivered something good. My motivation comes from my work, the more I work, more motivated I become.

WHENEVER POSSIBLE, TAKE THIS TO COMPANIES AND PROJECTS THAT DO NOT HAVE THE CONDITION TO PAY FOR A JOB OF EXCELLENCE IN DESIGN. LOOKING AT THEIR WORKS, ESPECIALLY THOSE OF BRAND DESIGN, WE WILL SEE THE SEARCH FOR SIMPLICITY, CONCISENESS AND ELEGANCE. BEING AN ART DIRECTOR, GIVES HIM A MORE ADVERTISING FEATURE TO ITS WORKS, WHICH CONFERS AN INTERESTING MIX IN WELL-CONSTRUCTED DESIGN AND BRAND POSITIONING AND STORYTELLING.
