LEGENDARY INTERVIEW

Design Legends ("DL") had the distinct honour to interview legendary designer ozestudi ("Ozestudi") for their original perspective and innovative approach to design as well as their creative lifestyle, we are very pleased to share our interview with our distinguished readers.

DL: Could you please tell us a bit about your design background and education?

Ozestudi : The design team is made up of very diverse academic profiles that correspond to the study plans of each professional and their age. A fact that shows us how over the years the teaching of design has been losing humanistic strength in favor of submitting to the accelerated dynamics of current societies and its tremendous bias on things. Despite this, the vision of the older designers continues to compensate for the lack of depth of the newest.

DL: What motivates you to design in general, why did you become a designer?

Ozestudi : We all agree on the enormous passion we have for design. It is a fact common to most designers. We study in a vocational way motivated by a huge interest and curiosity about the world that surrounds us and how it is manufactured. Design is a very tough discipline despite what people may think about the frivolity of some. Perhaps for this reason we designers are forced to have passion. Without it, the road would be too difficult.

DL: Did you choose to become a designer, or you were forced to become one?

Ozestudi : As we have said before, without passion, design is difficult to implement and for this reason, the vast majority of designers are in this field on their own initiative. We rarely study design by mistake. Another very different thing is that, once we discover what the design is, be what we thought it was.

DL: What do you design, what type of designs do you wish to design more of?

Ozestudi : The fantastic thing about design is the opportunity it offers you when facing very diverse sectors and industries. In this sense, we like to design all kinds of objects and products because of all of them we learn and enrich ourselves culturally very much.

DL: What should young designers do to become a design legend like you?

Ozestudi : We would not define ourselves as a legend, nothing could be further. But we will not be very wrong if we say there are no shortcuts. The only way to design, to really design, that is, to have real projects for real clients, is based on constant effort. So we would say to all the young designers that it is a marathon rather than a sprint race, that they prepare and do not lose their strength.

DL: What distinguishes between a good designer and a great designer?

Ozestudi : Possibly the vision. Have a particular vision that allows a particular interpretation and consequently to offer always differentiated solutions. And also understand that the design is detail and function. If a design does not give us anything, it is not a rewarding experience, it does not do anything good.

DL: What makes a good design a really good design, how do you evaluate good design?

Ozestudi : A design is good for the design when two situations occur. On the one hand, design always provides a solution that satisfies a human, physical, functional or spiritual need. And for the other that contributes something so important that it generates in other designers the possibility of making a new design.

DL: What is the value of good design? Why should everyone invest in good design?

Ozestudi : Above all, mainly, the sectors that live by design. Obviously, a good design is always an investment because it allows to modernize the industry, move the market and obtain benefits that go beyond the sector itself, benefiting an entire society. Design is not just an investment for the industry, it is the best investment.

DL: What would you design and who would you design for if you had the time?

Ozestudi : Our particularity is that we feel very comfortable using the design for what was created. I am open to all types of projects for all types of clients and users. So we do not have a preconceived desire about a particular project. That said, it is clear that working for customers who pamper the product and who live design as a way of life is always more rewarding.

DL: What is the dream project you haven’t yet had time to realize?

Ozestudi : This project is always to come. Doing what is not to blame for ending passion.

DL: What is your secret recipe of success in design, what is your secret ingredient?

Ozestudi : Work, work and work. With this dynamic you always achieve results.

DL: Who are some other design masters and legends you get inspired from?

Ozestudi : They are too many, from the classics to the most young talents. It is the magic of design, totally new, designed for all ages and all times. And from all of them you learn.

DL: What are your favorite designs by other designers, why do you like them?

Ozestudi : A few years ago, when we were younger we were more iconic. Today the truth is that we admire the pieces of the most anonymous designers because they compose our daily reality, that of our house, our city and our most daily context. Today we would talk about pieces that do not have a signature.

DL: What is your greatest design, which aspects of that design makes you think it is great?

Ozestudi : All the designs we have made have been satisfied with the needs of our customers and that is why we are proud of all of them. There is no design studio that has projects projects hidden under the carpet. All of them involved an effort, they provided a solution and we are satisfied.

DL: How could people improve themselves to be better designers, what did you do?

Ozestudi : We repeat a lot, but there are no great secrets. Have passion and dedicate a lot of effort. That or get lucky directly, ha ha ha ...

DL: If you hadn’t become a designer, what would you have done?

Ozestudi : Architects, for example. Although it is a very hard field, both academically and professionally.

DL: How do you define design, what is design for you?

Ozestudi : We understand a design that is very focused on solutions. So that we exercise as an intellectual dynamic that accepts human needs. It is very mundane but it is sincere.

DL: Who helped you to reach these heights, who was your biggest supporter?

Ozestudi : Each and every one of the clients we have had, it does not matter if they are big or small, all of them. Each one has allowed us to learn a little more, have experience and understand our own work. Without a doubt, customers are more important and not strictly in a commercial term, that too.

DL: What helped you to become a great designer?

Ozestudi : Ha ha ha ... we're still nothing ...

DL: What were the obstacles you faced before becoming a design master?

Ozestudi : We are still students. In the design there are few truly teachers, the vast majority, in which they include us, we are still apprentices.

DL: How do you think designers should present their work?

Ozestudi : The project presentations are truly important. Many designers neglect this aspect but it is fundamental. They have to take care of them a lot, give maximum information and know that the first thing the client will see is what will mark their future decisions regarding the project. That they take care of them to the maximum.

DL: What’s your next design project, what should we expect from you in future?

Ozestudi : We are currently working on 9 very diverse projects such as a children's backpack, a machine for the construction sector, a new element for the installation, a rodenticide ... As you can see nothing that the other has with the other ... It is what fun.

DL: What’s your ultimate goal as a designer?

Ozestudi : Continue designing. It seems an easy answer but in reality it is very difficult to design, that is, to have good clients and a commission. Companies that pay and bet on the design. Especially in some countries such as Spain, for example.

DL: What people expect from an esteemed designer such as yourself?

Ozestudi : What a sincere sea in its solutions and above all very rigorous. Everything that may well have a positive impact on the entire professional design sector. Doing it well adds up for everyone.

DL: How does design help create a better society?

Ozestudi : It is an economic sector more. In this sense, design is fundamental for the growth of a society. Beyond this pragmatic aspect, design makes our life more comfortable and also makes us happier. Who does not want to live in a happy society?

DL: What are you currently working on that you are especially excited about?

Ozestudi : As we have said before, we have many projects on the table. Everyone learns, especially those who come from sectors or fields that do not live daily. So we all get excited.

DL: Which design projects gave you the most satisfaction, why?

Ozestudi : We have to recognize that the first projects were the most important, because the children who opened the doors and the most difficult doors to open. There are also some design and help designs that are also recognized in design awards.

DL: What would you like to see changed in design industry in the coming years?

Ozestudi : What we are going to say now may seem an incongruity but what is more important for the future of design than traveling back to its past. Retake the importance of the function and things well done.

DL: Where do you think the design field is headed next?

Ozestudi : Today design is a field that is closely linked to technological advances, for this reason the design will go as far as technology and reach where the human being is strong.

DL: How long does it take you to finalize a design project?

Ozestudi : We all know, although it is something very negative, that many designers only make drawings and that the solution falls on other customer's equipment. But the purpose of design and design is the solution and for this reason a project, and more when it is innovative, takes a long time. Of half two years.

DL: When you have a new design project, where do you start?

Ozestudi : Every design project begins with an information phase. The more extensive and detailed this stage, the more successful we will have in our solutions. The secret is not to look only for what seems to need to try to see there.

DL: What is your life motto as a designer?

Ozestudi : To break stereotypes we can say, because it is true, that we lead a normal life. Like any other professional and work routine is also important when effort is such a large element in the results.

DL: Do you think design sets the trends or trends set the designs?

Ozestudi : It is the eternal dilemma. What does the design change bring? The society? Is it the design that changes society? With trends, the same thing happens, sometimes with trends that change the design and others that design sets the trend.

DL: What is the role of technology when you design?

Ozestudi : Every day is more important. New tools such as modeling software or 3D printing allow you to save time, be more precise and have more guarantees. Despite this, the pencil is still the fundamental tool because it is the one that connects the brain with the paper.

DL: What kind of design software and equipment do you use in your work?

Ozestudi : As we have said before, pencil is the most basic thing but we have quite standardized design software. I will not tell brands to not advertise, ha, ha, ha.

DL: What is the role of the color, materials and ambient in design?

Ozestudi : These elements end up composing the final design. As part of it, everyone is important. They allow one or other solutions and generate the details that make a good design.

DL: What do you wish people to ask about your design?

Ozestudi : We like it more than they use it. But as we are prepared for all kinds of questions. The important thing is always to have answers.

DL: When you see a new great design or product what comes into your mind?

Ozestudi : The good design of other colleagues makes us feel very good. We feel that we are part of a sector in which great things can be done.

DL: Who is your ideal design partner? Do you believe in co-design?

Ozestudi : It is very difficult to design in a group although we have to do it. In the end, it is important to know more, delegate and recognize the ideas of your colleagues if they bring the best solutions to the project. In reality it is to focus all efforts on the results, wherever they come from.

DL: Which people you interacted had the most influence on your design?

Ozestudi : All people modify things, even in a very small portion. All those who think working within the academic project being part of the project.

DL: Which books you read had the most effect on your design?

Ozestudi : Many, though not exactly, have their titles in English and say nonsense.

DL: How did you develop your skills as a master designer?

Ozestudi : Step by Step. Each project supposes a learning that improves the next project. In the end, they all make up an experience that gives you a certain mastery.

DL: Irrelative of time and space, who you would want to meet, talk and discuss with?

Ozestudi : With the great current theorists, Maldonado and Bonsiepe but also to be able to have a quiet coffee with the Bauhaus components. Definitely.

DL: How do you feel about all the awards and recognition you had, is it hard to be famous?

Ozestudi : The awards are part of a public recognition that help defend their work against those who know less about the design sector. But the greatest merit or recognition must always be from the client.

DL: What is your favorite color, place, food, season, thing and brand?

Ozestudi : Many, each of them in its right moment and measure. Having unmovable preferences does not allow us to enjoy new things.

DL: Please tell us a little memoir, a funny thing you had experienced as a designer?

Ozestudi : Not all the secrets of the profession, ha ha ha ... The best thing is for everyone to discover their own.

DL: What makes your day great as a designer, how do you motivate yourself?

Ozestudi : Our responsibilities as designers do not allow us to enjoy many times the daily life of our work. The moments for the enjoyment coincide with the completion of the projects or when the clients are satisfied. Also win a prize, ha ha ha ... thanks for the A´Design Award.

DL: When you were a little child, was it obvious that you would become a great designer?

Ozestudi : When a child never has anything clear.

DL: What do you think about future; what do you see will happen in thousand years from now?

Ozestudi : This if we have it very clear. Within the years only 99% of what we know today is to be recognizable. The world will change a lot. Partly thanks to the designers. Let's keep that in mind when we pick up the pencil every morning.

DL: Please tell us anything you wish your fans to know about you, your design and anything else?

Ozestudi : We have already told many things! Ha, ha, ha ... a very, very big greeting! Thank you
