LEGENDARY INTERVIEW

Design Legends ("DL") had the distinct honour to interview legendary designer Cameron ("Cameron") for their original perspective and innovative approach to design as well as their creative lifestyle, we are very pleased to share our interview with our distinguished readers.

DL: Could you please tell us a bit about your design background and education?

Cameron : Lindsey Vaniman studied at the Fashion Institute of Design and Merchendising, as well as having been sewing since she was seven years old. She has designed everything from handbags and purses to historical costumes, to wardrobe in the film industry. Cameron has a background in creative project management in animation and visual effects before going into design.

DL: What motivates you to design in general, why did you become a designer?

Cameron : Design is motivated by necessity. We think all great design should have a backbone of functionality, driven by a desire to solve a problem. We become designers to solve those very problems in our own lives and share our solutions with the world.

DL: What do you design, what type of designs do you wish to design more of?

Cameron : We design small to medium sized travel goods and personal accessories. We just launched a series of coasters, which marks our entry into the homeware sector, an area we've always been passionate about.

DL: What should young designers do to become a design legend like you?

Cameron : Jump right in and mess around. Once you have an idea, get that working prototype up as quickly and as lean as you can. Then test, test, test.

DL: What distinguishes between a good designer and a great designer?

Cameron : A good designer focuses on aesthetics over performance. A great designer can incorporate both.

DL: What would you design and who would you design for if you had the time?

Cameron : We would love to break into larger scale products like backpacks and duffle bags. We think there are some designs in these areas that are incredibly dated or not very functional and we'd like to try our hand at updating them.

DL: What is your secret recipe of success in design, what is your secret ingredient?

Cameron : The secret ingredient is being open to change. One clutch that we designed was beautiful, but it did not meat our functionality requirements. It got put on the shelf until we had the idea to transform it into a travel jewelry case. From there, the Duchess was born and has been a great seller for us.

DL: What is your greatest design, which aspects of that design makes you think it is great?

Cameron : The Wanderer is our flagship design. As a leather travel dopp kit, we believe it is currently the most functional design in this area on the market. It solves a very specific need: keeping items contained while still being easily accessible.

DL: How does design help create a better society?

Cameron : Design truly drives the backbone of society. The more that design can create ease and reduce friction in people's lives, the more people can open themselves to the thing that they were meant to do or create, adding to society as a whole.

DL: What would you like to see changed in design industry in the coming years?

Cameron : I'd love to see busyness in design reduced. People seem to be adding more more more to everything. I'd love to see more targeted, cleaner design be perpetuated.

DL: Please tell us anything you wish your fans to know about you, your design and anything else?

Cameron : We want people to travel and see the world and be able to focus on that experience, and therefore, surround themselves with accessories that aid that quest instead of get in the way.
