Design Legends ("DL") had the distinct honour to interview legendary designer Bomu Xue ("BX") for their original perspective and innovative approach to design as well as their creative lifestyle, we are very pleased to share our interview with our distinguished readers.

DL: Could you please tell us a bit about your design background and education?

BX : We are a design team in Luxun Academic of Fine Arts which is consist of two tutors and some students, major in Public Facility.

DL: What motivates you to design in general, why did you become a designer?

BX : Design is a untouchable part of our life, and when I was a child I focus on painting and drawing to become a designer.

DL: What do you design, what type of designs do you wish to design more of?

BX : I want to become a designer get people a better life.

DL: What should young designers do to become a design legend like you?

BX : They must have passion with design.To be honest, my suggestion is paying more attention to the details around us.Inspiration often comes from live and our aim is to make life easy.

DL: What distinguishes between a good designer and a great designer?

BX : A great designer always want to use they product to change the world.

DL: What makes a good design a really good design, how do you evaluate good design?

BX : Originality comes from the details of live.

DL: What is the value of good design? Why should everyone invest in good design?

BX : Good design helps a product to be understood is said by Dieter Rams, it's the rule of my design at the same time.

DL: What would you design and who would you design for if you had the time?

BX : Do some product design, for some elderly people and young generation.

DL: What is the dream project you haven’t yet had time to realize?

BX : Design cars which is a symbol of Chinese culture.

DL: What is your secret recipe of success in design, what is your secret ingredient?

BX : Focus on the actually people need and solve this kind of problem.

DL: Who are some other design masters and legends you get inspired from?

BX : Some designer interview to my studio.

DL: What are your favorite designs by other designers, why do you like them?

BX : Dieter Rams and some Japanese designer.

DL: What is your greatest design, which aspects of that design makes you think it is great?

BX : It's named life buoy.When there is a shipwreck that people have to abandon the ship to escape, the cold water is the No. 1 killer for death of. Therefore, to maintain body temperature is the primary is the principal issue. Hurry and panic escape may also result in accidental bodily injury and the wound of blood will lead to shark attack, which endangers the lives of the drowning people. However, the traditional life buoy cannot solve the problems above.

DL: How could people improve themselves to be better designers, what did you do?

BX : Centralize the kills of drawing and using softwares and see some original book.

DL: If you hadn’t become a designer, what would you have done?

BX : Maybe lend a job at a advertisement agency.

DL: How do you define design, what is design for you?

BX : Design is my life.

DL: Who helped you to reach these heights, who was your biggest supporter?

BX : My team numbers.

DL: What helped you to become a great designer?

BX : Find problems and try your best to solve them.If a designer doesn't have this ability ，they lose the spirit of design.

DL: What were the obstacles you faced before becoming a design master?

BX : The experience.

DL: How do you think designers should present their work?

BX : Making a reasonable schedule is an important ability to a designer.I often deal with some trivial matters in the afternoon and leave work time in the night ，because some wonderful ideas often come out in a quite atmosphere.

DL: What’s your next design project, what should we expect from you in future?

BX : I want to do some design focus on interaction, it's an important part of our life in every intelligent design.

DL: What’s your ultimate goal as a designer?

BX : To make people more happier in their life.

DL: What people expect from an esteemed designer such as yourself?

BX : I think a good designer should have the feelings to lives，thus more people can accept their ideas and production.

DL: How does design help create a better society?

BX : Do some design focus on some people who is disabled.

DL: What are you currently working on that you are especially excited about?

BX : We do some brain storm and it has a lot of fun.

DL: Which design projects gave you the most satisfaction, why?

BX : A design named Life buyo, because it can make people convince with their life.

DL: What would you like to see changed in design industry in the coming years?

BX : Artificial intelligence is filled of our life.

DL: Where do you think the design field is headed next?

BX : Interaction design.

DL: How long does it take you to finalize a design project?

BX : Most of design takes me about 3 months.And some difficult one takes me about one year.

DL: When you have a new design project, where do you start?

BX : Starting at my studio with my team numbers.

DL: What is your life motto as a designer?

BX : Gutes Design macht ein Produkt brauchbar.

DL: Do you think design sets the trends or trends set the designs?

BX : I think design sets the trends, trends come from people really want,such as apple.

DL: What is the role of technology when you design?

BX : It's a big part of my design.

DL: What kind of design software and equipment do you use in your work?

BX : Some design softwares which is named Rhino, Key-shot, photoshop.And I think marks is so convenient to draw some ideas.

DL: What is the role of the color, materials and ambient in design?

BX : It's very important of these, it determined the level of this design.

DL: What do you wish people to ask about your design?

BX : How our design to change people's life.

DL: When you see a new great design or product what comes into your mind?

BX : Wonderful and It's actually i need.

DL: Who is your ideal design partner? Do you believe in co-design?

BX : My students and I think it's suit for me.

DL: Which people you interacted had the most influence on your design?

BX : Some designer's thinking on books.

DL: Which books you read had the most effect on your design?

BX : Design in design.

DL: How did you develop your skills as a master designer?

BX : Communication with some good designer and I can learn the character with them.

DL: Irrelative of time and space, who you would want to meet, talk and discuss with?

BX : I want to see Kenya Hara and discuss him with how to inherit the culture of my country.

DL: How do you feel about all the awards and recognition you had, is it hard to be famous?

BX : I feel so excited and I think to be famous is a little difficult.

DL: What is your favorite color, place, food, season, thing and brand?

BX : iMac design from Apple. Coffee machine from Braun.Some small design from IKEA and MUJI such as bed, table and so forth. Orange is my favorite color, l like my apartment so much.

DL: Please tell us a little memoir, a funny thing you had experienced as a designer?

BX : One day I has a great idea about bus shelter. I considered it could be more convenient and more multifunctional. So I draw many sketch. Then I told my thought to the teachers. Teachers think it has so many difference from the traditional type. Finally we found many data about it and make the virtual model.

DL: What makes your day great as a designer, how do you motivate yourself?

BX : Have some ideas

DL: When you were a little child, was it obvious that you would become a great designer?

BX : I like drawing so much.

DL: What do you think about future; what do you see will happen in thousand years from now?

BX : Maybe we will emigrate to the space.

DL: Please tell us anything you wish your fans to know about you, your design and anything else?

BX : Our team is come from China.And the country effect me a lot, such as the handcrafts, the red color and the special animal which is named panda and a kind of material bamboo.These things are able to use on our design. And I have much to be proud of it we can present more design about our culture.
