Design Legends ("DL") had the distinct honour to interview legendary designer Dragana Stojanović ("DS") for their original perspective and innovative approach to design as well as their creative lifestyle, we are very pleased to share our interview with our distinguished readers.
DL: Could you please tell us a bit about your design background and education?
DS : My interests for visual arts evoke early, in elementary school, where I've started drawing and painting with advanced skills. Around the age of 13 I had my first paintings exhibition. After that I continued to upgrade my passion for creativity through different visual forms - from design to art installations. I've graduated from the University of Fine Arts in Belgrade.
DL: What motivates you to design in general, why did you become a designer?
DS : I like beautiful stuff with artistic look. It's a game of colors, lines, shapes and materials that makes me alive and emotional. It's good that you can make this game with your own rules.
DL: Did you choose to become a designer, or you were forced to become one?
DS : Is it even possible to be forced to do that? If so, it would be nice punishment :)
DL: What should young designers do to become a design legend like you?
DS : Not to think about becoming a legend but to develop their skills to a level where nothing can be a limit.
DL: What distinguishes between a good designer and a great designer?
DS : It can be very tiny thing. It is easy to become great but very hard to stay on that level. Really great designers are for a long time on top.
DL: What makes a good design a really good design, how do you evaluate good design?
DS : When you have to be objective you have to evaluate real characteristics, respond to tasks and briefs. But when evaluating something from your own point of view I always follow my emotion towards visuals.
DL: What is the value of good design? Why should everyone invest in good design?
DS : Design is the first and the last thing people will see or remember from a brand. I would recommend investing in a good design always.
DL: What is your secret recipe of success in design, what is your secret ingredient?
DS : Every secret comes from a great passion for designing. Each project I work on has its own special needs and I try to find those secrets while process is going on.
DL: How do you define design, what is design for you?
DS : Making ordinary things become beautiful, meaningful and arty.
