Design Legends ("DL") had the distinct honour to interview legendary designer Irene Lim ("IL") for their original perspective and innovative approach to design as well as their creative lifestyle, we are very pleased to share our interview with our distinguished readers.
DL: Could you please tell us a bit about your design background and education?
IL : I was trained as an Interior Designer and graduated from PJ College of Art & Design in Malaysia with Diploma Qualification.
DL: What motivates you to design in general, why did you become a designer?
IL : Turning my thought into a remarkable design or artwork is amazing and it motivates me always. I love being creative is the main reason for me to become a designer.
DL: Did you choose to become a designer, or you were forced to become one?
IL : Definitely it is my own choice.
DL: What do you design, what type of designs do you wish to design more of?
IL : I have no limit myself at any types of design as long as it is something new and interesting!
DL: What should young designers do to become a design legend like you?
IL : Be curious always.
DL: What distinguishes between a good designer and a great designer?
IL : A great designer will take many aspects into consideration depends on what they are designing and then turn it into a great and soul- touching solution to the respective target audience/market. A good designer may not design something as complete as it is possible to be. Both type of designers are respectful.
DL: What makes a good design a really good design, how do you evaluate good design?
IL : To me, a good design is the solution or design that provided must tie in with the original design intent.
DL: What is your secret recipe of success in design, what is your secret ingredient?
IL : Observation and exploration do help me a lot in every design process.
DL: If you hadn’t become a designer, what would you have done?
IL : I don't think I will do anything else except designer.
DL: Who helped you to reach these heights, who was your biggest supporter?
IL : Family and friends.
DL: What’s your ultimate goal as a designer?
IL : Set up my own studio and have my own design furniture collection in the market.
DL: How does design help create a better society?
IL : A well-designed place or thing could improve people's lifestyle physically and mentally.
DL: How long does it take you to finalize a design project?
IL : It depends, may take from days to months.
DL: When you have a new design project, where do you start?
IL : Study and understand through the client and project characteristic.
DL: What is your life motto as a designer?
IL : Never stop being curious.
DL: What kind of design software and equipment do you use in your work?
IL : Autodesk 3ds Max Vray, Autodesk AutoCAD, Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator and Google Sketchup.
DL: What is the role of the color, materials and ambient in design?
IL : Each has it own critical role and they are all relating and influencing each other in overall design.
DL: When you see a new great design or product what comes into your mind?
IL : The reason behind of the design and how it be created.
DL: Who is your ideal design partner? Do you believe in co-design?
IL : Anyone who is passionate in design.
DL: Which books you read had the most effect on your design?
IL : The Secret.
DL: Irrelative of time and space, who you would want to meet, talk and discuss with?
IL : The previous life of me.
DL: How do you feel about all the awards and recognition you had, is it hard to be famous?
IL : I feel very grateful for the recognition and it motivates me more in my future works.
DL: What is your favorite color, place, food, season, thing and brand?
IL : Black and White, Home, Rice, Autumn.
DL: When you were a little child, was it obvious that you would become a great designer?
IL : Not really.
DL: What do you think about future; what do you see will happen in thousand years from now?
IL : The future definitely will become even more advanced with those invented technologies and more creativity than now.
DL: Please tell us anything you wish your fans to know about you, your design and anything else?
IL : Every design is painstakingly created by every designer and from now onward let's take our part to make the world better together.
