Design Legends ("DL") had the distinct honour to interview legendary designer Mohammad Mostafa Sharifianmehr ("MMS") for their original perspective and innovative approach to design as well as their creative lifestyle, we are very pleased to share our interview with our distinguished readers.
MMS : I studied Electronics, which provided me with a strong technical foundation and an understanding of how various components and systems work together. After completing my education, I began working in the lighting industry. Over the years, I have been deeply involved in designing various aspects of lighting products. This includes not only the lights themselves but also the packaging and overall presentation. My role has allowed me to blend my technical expertise with my creative skills, ensuring that every element, from the functionality of the light to its aesthetic appeal and packaging, meets high standards and resonates with customers.

Over the years, I've honed my skills in crafting lighting solutions that not only illuminate spaces but also serve as striking focal points, enhancing the ambiance and functionality of various environments.In addition to lighting design, I've also ventured into designing other elements of interior decor, including tables, chairs, and mirrors. This multidisciplinary approach to design allows me to create cohesive and harmonious spaces where every element, from the lighting fixtures to the furniture pieces, complements each other seamlessly.While my expertise lies predominantly in lighting design, I find inspiration in exploring different facets of design and incorporating diverse elements into my projects. MMS : The distinction between a good designer and a great designer often lies in their attention to detail. While both possess technical skills and creative flair, a great designer goes above and beyond in meticulously considering every aspect of their design, down to the smallest detail.A good designer may create aesthetically pleasing designs that meet the basic requirements, but a great designer takes it a step further by obsessing over the finer points. They understand that it's the intricate details—the subtle nuances in form, texture, color, and functionality—that elevate a design from good to exceptional.Great designers have a keen eye for detail and an innate ability to anticipate how each element contributes to the overall composition. They sweat the small stuff, ensuring that every line, curve, and pixel is thoughtfully crafted to perfection. This dedication to precision and craftsmanship results in designs that not only look beautiful but also function seamlessly and evoke emotional resonance.In essence, while good designers create designs that work, great designers create designs that inspire, delight, and stand the test of time—all because of their unwavering commitment to getting the details just right.
MMS : A good design becomes a truly exceptional one when it excels in several key areas. Firstly, attention to detail is paramount. A design that considers even the smallest nuances and intricacies tends to stand out for its refinement and sophistication.Secondly, the practical application of the design is crucial. A truly good design not only looks appealing but also functions seamlessly in its intended environment. Whether it's a product, a space, or a digital interface, usability and functionality are essential components of a successful design.Thirdly, user-friendliness plays a significant role in evaluating design excellence. A design that prioritizes the user experience, anticipating and addressing user needs and preferences, is more likely to resonate with its audience and leave a lasting impression.Moreover, innovation and the introduction of new elements distinguish good designs from exceptional ones. Designs that push the boundaries of convention, introduce novel concepts, or solve existing problems in innovative ways often receive acclaim for their originality and forward-thinking approach.Lastly, the element of opportunity or chance can also elevate a good design to greatness. Sometimes, unexpected factors or serendipitous circumstances can contribute to the success and impact of a design, creating unforeseen opportunities for growth and recognition.In summary, a really good design is one that pays meticulous attention to detail, demonstrates practical application and user-friendliness, introduces innovative elements, and may even benefit from unexpected opportunities or chance occurrences.
MMS : Good design holds immense value because, much like therapy, it has the power to enhance our overall well-being and quality of life. Just as we seek therapy to address emotional or psychological needs, engaging with well-crafted design can have a therapeutic effect on our physical surroundings and mental state.Design, in its various forms, plays a significant role in shaping our environments and experiences. Thoughtfully designed spaces, products, and interfaces have the potential to evoke positive emotions, foster a sense of comfort and security, and even promote productivity and creativity.Much like therapy provides a space for self-expression and introspection, engaging with good design allows us to express ourselves and interact with our surroundings in meaningful ways. Whether it's a beautifully designed home that provides a sanctuary from the outside world, a user-friendly app that simplifies our daily tasks, or a piece of art that stirs our emotions, design has the capacity to enrich our lives on multiple levels.Investing in good design is not just about aesthetics; it's an investment in our well-being. By surrounding ourselves with well-designed environments and products, we can create spaces that nurture and support us, contributing to a sense of fulfillment and happiness in our daily lives.
MMS : I designed a table lamp for my mom since she's a fan of table lamps. I figured it's a bright idea to keep her well and happy!
MMS : I've got a lot of bright ideas swirling around in my head, especially when it comes to lamps. Step by step, I plan to bring each one to light, making sure to give them the time and attention they deserve.
MMS : My secret ingredient in design? It's a blend of inspiration from nature's beauty, studying other works for insights, and plenty of thinking time. But you can't discount the role of chance, sometimes the best ideas come when you least expect them! Of course, none of it would matter without hard work and dedication to bring those ideas to life, step by step.
MMS : While I don't draw inspiration from specific individuals, I do have a great admiration for Jean Nouvel. His innovative approach and distinctive style in both architecture and product design resonate with me profoundly.
MMS : While there are countless designs in the world that I admire, a few stand out in my mind at the moment. One of them is a lighting design by Jean Nouvel, a sphere he created for Troll, a Spanish lighting company. Additionally, I greatly appreciate Nouvel's work on the Louvre Museum in Abu Dhabi. Another design that captures my admiration is the IO model of the Occhio sphere lights. These designs resonate with me for their elegance, innovation, and seamless blend of form and function.
MMS : For me, it's challenging to pinpoint a single "greatest" design because I'm constantly looking ahead to the next project. Each new design I envision holds the potential to be my greatest yet. It's the excitement of creation and the pursuit of innovation that drive me forward. So, in essence, my greatest design is always the next one in the making.
MMS : To become better designers, individuals can focus on several strategies, including attentive observation of details, continuous learning, experimentation, and a forward-looking mindset. By watching closely and paying attention to details, we uncover nuances that enhance our understanding of design principles. Embracing failures as learning opportunities and staying curious about new ideas and techniques are also essential. Additionally, maintaining a forward-looking perspective, recognizing that the best designs are yet to be created, can fuel creativity and innovation. Personally, I emphasize watching details, embracing failures as learning opportunities, staying open to various sources of inspiration, and acknowledging that the journey to becoming a better designer is ongoing.
MMS : If I hadn't pursued a career in design, I might have explored other avenues that allow for creative expression and innovation. For instance, I could see myself as a chef, where I'd wield spatulas like paintbrushes, or perhaps as a coffee shop owner, creating latte art that's almost too beautiful to drink. It's interesting to note that all of my envisioned occupations relate to creation. Even if I were a pilot, I might find ways to express my creativity, perhaps by making shapes in the sky, aerial artistry at its finest!
MMS : Design is about creative problem-solving, marrying functionality with aesthetics to address challenges and enhance experiences. It involves understanding user needs and desires to craft meaningful solutions, whether it's designing user-friendly interfaces, sustainable products, or space layouts. A good design blends technical precision with artistic expression, ensuring effectiveness and beauty. Quality lighting is essential, setting the mood and ambiance of a space. By considering function, aesthetics, and user preferences, designers can create impactful solutions that strike the perfect balance between form and function, aesthetics, and technology.
MMS : My greatest supporter has undeniably been God, whose guidance and blessings have been invaluable on my journey. Additionally, I'm grateful for the support of my wonderful team members, Seyedsajad Jalalsadat and Atieh Koochakmanesh. Together, we've tackled challenges and celebrated successes, making this journey even more fulfilling.
MMS : Well, I believe that the journey to becoming a great designer is ongoing. I may not consider myself a great designer just yet, but I'm dedicated to continuous learning and improvement in my craft. Staying curious, open-minded, and committed to honing my skills are what I believe will ultimately help me grow and evolve as a designer. What helped me become a designer? Well, it all started with a passion for creation, which I believe has been a part of me since I was a baby. From early on, I found joy in experimenting with shapes, colors, and ideas. Over time, this curiosity grew into a desire to express myself through design, and with dedication and hard work, I've been able to pursue that passion.
MMS : Well, depending on your perspective, some difficulties can actually help you become a better designer. For me, learning new software was challenging, but it ultimately expanded my skill set and made me more versatile. Time restrictions can be tough, but they also force you to prioritize and work more efficiently. And yes, taking that first step into design can be daunting, but overcoming that fear is often the beginning of a rewarding journey of growth and creativity.
MMS : I believe designers should present their work visually, as the essence of design is best captured through imagery. The most effective way to do this is by using high-quality photos. Photos allow the audience to see the details, craftsmanship, and context of the design in a way that words alone cannot convey. Additionally, including visual aids like sketches, mockups, and prototypes can provide insight into the design process and demonstrate the evolution of the work. Accompanying these visuals with descriptive text is also very useful. Text can provide context, explain the design choices, and highlight key features that might not be immediately apparent in the images alone. This combination of visual and textual elements creates a comprehensive presentation that can effectively communicate the designer's vision, process, and the value of their work.
MMS : My next design project revolves around innovative lighting solutions. I'm currently working on a series of concepts that explore the intersection of functionality and aesthetics in lighting design. The aim is to create lighting fixtures that not only illuminate spaces effectively but also serve as artistic focal points within a room. You can expect to see designs that incorporate cutting-edge technology with sustainable materials, ensuring both energy efficiency and environmental friendliness. I'm experimenting with different forms, textures, and interactive elements that respond to the user's needs and preferences. These designs will reflect a blend of modern minimalism and organic forms, providing versatile solutions for various interior settings. In the future, I plan to continue pushing the boundaries of design by exploring new materials and technologies, and by collaborating with other creative professionals. My goal is to create pieces that are not only beautiful and functional but also contribute positively to the spaces they inhabit and the people who use them.
MMS : My ultimate goal as a designer is to explore the endless possibilities in design and uncover new ideas that have yet to be imagined. I believe there are countless innovations waiting to be discovered, and my mission is to bring these ideas to life and share them with the world. MMS : I'm currently immersed in designing the lighting for a large adventure shop specializing in mountaineering, climbing, and hiking gear. My focus is on creating a lighting scheme that not only illuminates the space effectively but also enhances the presentation of the products. By strategically using lighting techniques such as accent lighting, spotlights, and ambient lighting, I aim to highlight the rugged textures and intricate details of the adventure items. This approach not only improves visibility but also creates a dynamic and immersive shopping experience that resonates with outdoor enthusiasts. I'm excited about the opportunity to marry technical expertise with creative design to elevate how these goods are showcased and perceived in the shop environment.
MMS : The projects that have given me the most satisfaction are those where I've been able to deeply connect with the vision of the client and the essence of the project itself. Whether it's creating a serene and inviting space or designing a dynamic retail environment, the satisfaction often comes from aligning my design concepts with the client's expectations and the unique mood of the project. Projects that challenge me creatively and allow me to explore new ideas are particularly rewarding. Ultimately, seeing the project come to life and witnessing how it positively impacts its users brings me immense happiness and fulfillment as a designer.
MMS : In the coming years, I would like to see a greater emphasis on sustainable and environmentally responsible design practices across the industry. Integrating renewable materials, reducing waste, and embracing energy-efficient technologies can significantly reduce the environmental footprint of design projects. Additionally, fostering more inclusivity and diversity within the design community is crucial. Encouraging collaboration with diverse perspectives can lead to more innovative and culturally relevant designs that better serve global audiences. In my mind, every design that is grounded in principles of universe design—aligned with physics and mathematics—holds a special appeal. I find minimal design particularly compelling for its ability to distill complexity into essential elements, creating elegant and functional solutions. Embracing these principles alongside advancements in digital tools and technologies offers exciting opportunities to streamline the design process and enhance creativity. Together, these changes can lead to a more sustainable, inclusive, and technologically advanced design industry in the future.
MMS : I believe the design field is moving towards a future defined by sustainability, technological integration, and human-centered design. There's a clear trend towards embracing sustainable practices, leveraging advancements in technology like AR and VR for innovative design solutions, and prioritizing inclusive environments that enhance user experience. Minimalism and simplicity will continue to influence design aesthetics, promoting clarity and efficiency. Interdisciplinary collaborations and data-driven insights are also shaping the evolution of design, ensuring that projects are both responsive to user needs and culturally relevant. MMS : The timeline for finalizing a design project can vary depending on its complexity and specific requirements. I'm accustomed to adapting to different project timelines, sometimes completing projects within a day for smaller tasks that require quick turnaround, while larger and more intricate projects may take several weeks to ensure thoroughness and attention to detail. My priority is always to deliver high-quality results efficiently, focusing on the project intensely to meet deadlines without compromising on creativity or precision.
MMS : When I have a new design project, I start by finding an idea. Sometimes, ideas come to me suddenly and unexpectedly. Other times, inspiration comes from simple, everyday things, or from identifying a need for more comfort or efficiency in my surroundings. Technical issues can also spark new ideas. Once I have an initial idea, I spend time thinking deeply about it, exploring different angles and possibilities to develop it further. This process of ideation and reflection is crucial in laying a solid foundation for the design project.
MMS : My life motto as a designer is that every person must strive to be effective for the world. I believe in creating designs that not only fulfill their intended purpose but also contribute positively to the broader environment and society. This philosophy drives me to ensure that my work enhances people's lives, promotes sustainability, and inspires positive change. By being thoughtful, efficient, and purposeful in my designs, I aim to make a meaningful impact and encourage others to do the same.
MMS : I believe it's a dynamic interaction where both design and trends influence each other. Design has the power to set new trends by pushing boundaries, introducing innovative concepts, and responding to evolving needs and preferences. MMS : My design process typically begins with pencil and paper, where I sketch and brainstorm initial concepts. Once I have a solid foundation, I transition to Adobe Illustrator to refine and digitize my ideas. Illustrator allows me to create precise vector graphics and explore different visual elements. Afterward, my team collaborates using various design and modeling software to further develop and refine the concepts. These tools enable us to visualize designs in 2D and 3D, ensuring that we achieve both aesthetic excellence and functional feasibility in our projects.
MMS : Color, materials, and ambient factors are essential elements in design, each playing a distinct role. For me, the design process typically begins with exploring colors to establish the mood and visual identity. Colors evoke emotions—warm tones create coziness, while cool tones promote calmness—and guide the initial concept. As I progress, I consider materials to complement and refine my initial ideas. The choice of materials influences not only the tactile and visual qualities of the design but also its durability and sustainability. Additionally, ambient factors such as lighting and spatial arrangement are carefully considered to enhance usability and comfort. By integrating colors, materials, and ambient elements thoughtfully, designers can create cohesive and functional environments that resonate with users and reflect their intended mood and purpose.
MMS : I appreciate when people ask technically focused questions about my designs, such as how they are made, how they will be installed, and how they should be used. These questions allow me to share the intricacies of the design process, from material selection and fabrication methods to installation techniques and operational instructions. By discussing these technical aspects, I can showcase the thoughtfulness and precision that goes into creating functional and innovative solutions. It also helps ensure that users understand the design's capabilities and how best to utilize them to achieve optimal performance and satisfaction.
MMS : When I see a new great design or product, I am filled with a sense of respect and encouragement. I am often amazed by the creativity and innovation that designers bring to the table. It inspires me to push my own boundaries and strive for excellence in my work. Great designs provoke admiration for their ingenuity, functionality, and aesthetic appeal, prompting me to analyze and appreciate the thought process behind them. Overall, encountering exceptional designs fuels my passion for the field and motivates me to contribute meaningfully to the world of design.
MMS : My ideal design partners are Seyedsajad Jalalsadat and Atieh Koochakmanesh, who share my vision and contribute immensely to our projects. They are not only talented but also understand and enhance my ideas, leading to collaborative synergy that propels our designs forward. Co-design is crucial to our process as it allows us to leverage each other's strengths, brainstorm creatively, and refine concepts collectively. MMS : My two partners, especially my girlfriend Atieh Koochakmanesh, have had a profound influence on my design journey. MMS : Among the many books I've read on design, "1000 Lights Vol. 2" and "Lighting Perspectives from ERCO Company" have had a profound impact on my approach. These books delve deep into the intricacies of lighting design, showcasing a diverse range of innovative concepts and applications. They have significantly influenced my understanding of how lighting can transform spaces, evoke emotions, and enhance architectural elements. By studying these books, I've gained valuable insights into the artistry and technical aspects of lighting design, inspiring me to integrate sophisticated lighting solutions into my own projects.
MMS : I developed my skills as a master designer by first focusing on observing closely, then deepening my understanding through thoughtful reflection, and finally, putting in dedicated hard work. By keenly observing design trends, architectural innovations, and artistic expressions, I gained valuable insights into effective design principles and aesthetics. This attentive observation provided a strong foundation for me to think critically about design challenges and possibilities. Coupled with dedicated hard work, this approach allowed me to refine my skills, innovate, and consistently deliver impactful design solutions.
MMS : Meeting and discussing with Jean Nouvel, Thomas Edison, Achille Castiglioni, and Axel Meise would be incredibly enriching due to their contributions to architecture, design, and innovation.

MMS : For the latest A' Design Award, our journey with the photo set was quite eventful. Initially, we changed our photos three times as we continuously sought perfection. After each session, we initially felt satisfied, only to realize later that improvements were still possible. Finally, we decided to take photos in a small studio, which proved to be the ideal setting. It took us about 30 minutes, but we were confident that these photos captured our design in the best possible light. This experience taught us the importance of meticulousness and persistence in striving for excellence in presentation.
MMS : For me, as a designer, starting the day with the sunrise and early morning tranquility is a source of great inspiration. Although it can be challenging to wake up early, I cherish the calmness and quietude of that time. It allows me to focus deeply on my designs and cultivate ideas that grow steadily in my mind. This peaceful beginning sets a positive tone for the day, motivating me to immerse myself fully in creative exploration and problem-solving. Embracing this quiet time helps me stay motivated and committed to pushing the boundaries of design innovation.
MMS : When I was a child, my curiosity often led me to dismantle things to understand how they worked. One memorable incident was when I accidentally damaged an old clock, and to my surprise, it started working again. While it wasn't obvious then that I would become a great designer, my early fascination with understanding mechanisms and how things operate laid the foundation for my future interest in design and innovation. It taught me the importance of exploration and experimentation in discovering how to improve and create new things.
MMS : Predicting a thousand years into the future is quite challenging, especially considering the rapid technological advancements we've seen even within the past few decades. It's possible that in a thousand years, humanity may return to simpler ways of living for better health, resembling the primary stages of mankind. However, I'm optimistic about the next hundred years. I believe that everything will be of better quality, and we will see significant growth and improvements in design. Innovations in technology and design will continue to enhance our lives, making the future brighter and more advanced.
MMS : I want my fans to know that my design philosophy centers on seeing better and better. By observing everything around us, we can solve its complexities. Although things might seem very complicated at first, they become simpler the more you look at them. This approach allows us to break down problems and find elegant solutions. I believe that with this mindset, anyone can become a creator in the very near future. My journey is about constant improvement, deep observation, and simplifying complexities to create impactful and innovative designs.
