DL: Could you please tell us a bit about your design background and education?

XZ : My design background and education have been instrumental in shaping my career as a designer. I studied Visual Communication Design in university, where I gained a strong foundation in design principles, techniques, and aesthetics. Additionally, I have been fortunate to have over thirty years of experience working in various design fields, including packaging design, urban landscape design, and architectural design. My education and practical experience have equipped me with the knowledge, skills, and insights necessary to excel in the design industry.

DL: What motivates you to design in general, why did you become a designer?

XZ : What motivates me to design is the opportunity to make a positive impact on people's lives and the world around me. I am driven by a passion for creativity, problem-solving, and innovation. Design allows me to express my ideas, emotions, and values in a tangible and meaningful way. It's not just a job for me; it's a calling and a lifelong pursuit of excellence.

DL: Did you choose to become a designer, or you were forced to become one?

XZ : I chose to become a designer because it aligns with my interests, strengths, and values. While there may have been external influences or expectations, ultimately, the decision to pursue a career in design was mine. It was driven by a deep-seated passion for creativity, a desire to make a difference, and a belief in the power of design to shape the world for the better.

DL: What do you design, what type of designs do you wish to design more of?

XZ : I design a wide range of products and projects, spanning from packaging design to urban planning. However, I am particularly interested in exploring more sustainable and environmentally friendly design solutions. This includes prioritizing environmental stewardship, promoting diversity and equity in design practice and education, and advocating for design solutions that address pressing social and humanitarian issues. I also hope to see increased collaboration and interdisciplinary approaches to design, as well as greater recognition and support for emerging designers and underrepresented voices in the field.

DL: Where do you think the design field is headed next?

XZ : The design field is headed towards a future that is increasingly interdisciplinary, collaborative, and technology-driven. We can expect to see greater integration of digital tools, data analytics, and artificial intelligence in the design process, enabling designers to create more personalized, adaptive, and responsive solutions. Additionally, there will be a growing focus on human-centered design, user experience, and emotional intelligence, as well as a renewed emphasis on design ethics, sustainability, and social impact.

DL: How long does it take you to finalize a design project?

XZ : The time it takes to finalize a design project can vary depending on factors such as complexity, scope, and client requirements. Some projects may take weeks or months to complete, while others may span years or even decades. Regardless of the timeline, my priority is always to deliver a high-quality design solution that meets or exceeds the client's expectations and achieves the project's objectives. This may involve multiple iterations, revisions, and refinements throughout the design process, as well as ongoing communication and collaboration with stakeholders to ensure alignment and satisfaction.

DL: When you have a new design project, where do you start?

XZ : When starting a new design project, I typically begin by conducting thorough research and analysis to understand the project's context, goals, and constraints. This involves gathering information, studying relevant precedents, and conducting user interviews or surveys to gain insights into user needs and preferences. Once I have a clear understanding of the project requirements, I proceed to brainstorming and ideation, exploring different concepts, ideas, and approaches to solving the design problem. From there, I develop and refine the most promising concepts through sketching, prototyping, and iterative feedback loops, until arriving at a final design solution that meets the project objectives and exceeds the client's expectations.

DL: What is your life motto as a designer?

XZ : My life motto as a designer is "Innovate with Purpose, Create with Passion." This motto reflects my belief in the importance of creativity, innovation, and purpose-driven design. It reminds me to always stay true to my values, pursue excellence in everything I do, and use my skills and talents to make a positive impact on the world.

DL: Do you think design sets the trends or trends set the designs?

XZ : I believe that design and trends influence each other in a dynamic and symbiotic relationship. While design has the power to shape trends by introducing new ideas, styles, and technologies, trends also influence design by reflecting broader cultural, social, and economic shifts. As a designer, I strive to balance innovation with relevance, drawing inspiration from emerging trends while also staying true to timeless design principles and values.

DL: What is the role of technology when you design?

XZ : Technology plays a crucial role in the design process, enabling designers to explore, create, and communicate ideas more effectively and efficiently. From digital modeling and simulation tools to virtual reality and augmented reality platforms, technology offers a wealth of resources and capabilities that enhance the design process and expand the possibilities for innovation. However, it's important for designers to use technology as a tool rather than a crutch, maintaining a human-centered approach and prioritizing creativity, empathy, and ethical considerations in their work.

DL: What kind of design software and equipment do you use in your work?

XZ : In my work, I use a variety of design software and equipment to bring my ideas to life. This includes industry-standard software such as Adobe Creative Suite for graphic design, Autodesk AutoCAD and Revit for architectural design, and Blender for 3D modeling. I also use digital drawing tablets, 3D printers, and other prototyping tools to create physical prototypes and models. Additionally, I leverage online resources, design libraries, and collaborative platforms to access inspiration, share ideas, and collaborate with colleagues and clients.

DL: What is the role of the color, materials and ambient in design?

XZ : Color, materials, and ambient play a crucial role in design, influencing how people perceive, experience, and interact with the designed environment. Color can evoke emotions, create visual interest, and communicate brand identity, while materials can affect functionality, durability, and sustainability. Ambient factors such as lighting, acoustics, and spatial layout contribute to the overall atmosphere and user experience, shaping how people feel and behave within a space. As a designer, I carefully consider these elements and their impact on the user experience, striving to create cohesive and harmonious designs that engage the senses and enrich the human experience.

DL: What do you wish people to ask about your design?

XZ : I wish people would ask more about the thought process and inspiration behind my designs, as well as the challenges and breakthroughs encountered along the way. I believe that understanding the story behind a design adds depth and meaning to the final product, fostering a deeper appreciation and connection with the designer's vision and intent.

DL: When you see a new great design or product what comes into your mind?

XZ : When I see a new great design or product, I am filled with a sense of awe and inspiration. I admire the creativity, ingenuity, and craftsmanship that went into creating it, and I feel excited about the possibilities it represents. I also reflect on how the design addresses user needs and challenges, and how it pushes the boundaries of innovation and excellence in the field. Ultimately, great design inspires me to push myself further and strive for excellence in my own work.

DL: Who is your ideal design partner? Do you believe in co-design?

XZ : My ideal design partner is someone who shares my values, vision, and commitment to excellence. They should be creative, collaborative, and open-minded, with complementary skills and expertise that complement my own. I believe in the power of co-design and interdisciplinary collaboration, as it brings together diverse perspectives, ideas, and talents to create more innovative and impactful solutions. Together, we can leverage our strengths, overcome challenges, and achieve greater success than we could alone.

DL: Which people you interacted had the most influence on your design?

XZ : The people who have had the most influence on my design are my mentors, colleagues, and collaborators who have supported, challenged, and inspired me throughout my career. From teachers who instilled in me a passion for design to colleagues who pushed me to think outside the box, their guidance, feedback, and encouragement have been invaluable in shaping my growth and development as a designer.
