LEGENDARY INTERVIEW

Design Legends ("DL") had the distinct honour to interview legendary designer Tong Tong ("TT") for their original perspective and innovative approach to design as well as their creative lifestyle, we are very pleased to share our interview with our distinguished readers.

DL: Could you please tell us a bit about your design background and education?

TT : My name is Tong, and I am a fashion designer of Chinese origin, currently based in New York City. My passion for fashion was sparked not by traditional education, but through a serendipitous encounter with a fashion class that I attended out of curiosity. This experience opened my eyes to the profound cultural significance and meticulous craftsmanship of fashion, turning what was a fleeting interest into a lifelong vocation.

DL: Did you choose to become a designer, or you were forced to become one?

TT : My early interest in art was nurtured by an inspiring art history class during my high school years, which encouraged me to explore my creative talents more deeply. This exploration led me to pursue a career in art and design, where I have been continuously seeking knowledge and honing my skills. Today, I draw upon my diverse cultural background and the rich experiences gathered along my journey to infuse authenticity and depth into my designs. Each creation is a testament to my commitment to storytelling, craftsmanship, and fashion as a powerful medium for self-expression and cultural dialogue.

DL: What do you design, what type of designs do you wish to design more of?

TT : My design portfolio draws inspiration from a diverse array of influences, including personal memories, a deep appreciation for fashion history, and an adventurous exploration of materials. I specialize in skillfully juxtaposing masculinity with femininity, blending functional elements with whimsical touches. My designs seamlessly merge tradition with innovative concepts, resulting in captivating and thought-provoking creations that challenge conventional boundaries. Moving forward, I aspire to continue exploring this unique approach to fashion, creating designs that evoke emotion and inspire creativity.

DL: What should young designers do to become a design legend like you?

TT : For someone who's just getting started, I believe it's crucial to be comfortable with the idea that things won't always go as planned and to maintain curiosity and enthusiasm. Experiment creatively without overwhelming yourself, and your unique voice will naturally develop over time. Additionally, acquiring a strong understanding of various garment-making techniques is important, as it will establish a solid foundation for your own designs and boost your confidence in the creative process. Moreover, I highly recommend actively engaging with others who share your interests. Whether it’s through discussions, networking events, or online communities, interacting with like-minded individuals can provide invaluable guidance and support. Personally, I’ve found that these connections have played a crucial role in my development, offering insights and encouragement that have propelled my growth in ways I never anticipated.

DL: What makes a good design a really good design, how do you evaluate good design?

TT : When evaluating a design, I prioritize understanding the designer's original intention and research. It's essential to assess whether their work effectively realizes these objectives. Additionally, I consider the balance between functionality and aesthetics, if relevant, to gauge the overall effectiveness of the design.

DL: Who are some other design masters and legends you get inspired from?

TT : My favorite designers are Issey Miyake, Hussein Chalayan, and Massimo Osti. Issey Miyake is renowned for his technology-driven designs and innovative use of fabrics. Hussein Chalayan integrates design, technology, and art, incorporating deep social commentary into his work. Massimo Osti transformed urban sportswear with his innovative fabrics and dyeing techniques. These designers have not only created visually striking pieces but have also significantly pushed the boundaries of fashion.

DL: If you hadn’t become a designer, what would you have done?

TT : If I hadn't pursued a career in fashion design, I would have been drawn to the film industry, which was one of my early career aspirations during high school. Even now, I sometimes imagine myself working as a costume designer. This role would encompass two of my favorite fields, making it a fitting and fulfilling career path.

DL: What would you like to see changed in design industry in the coming years?

TT : In the coming years, I hope to witness significant advancements in sustainability within the fashion industry. Addressing the environmental impact of fashion production is crucial, and I believe the industry will find innovative ways to mitigate pollution and promote eco-friendly practices. Additionally, I advocate for greater opportunities and support for younger generations entering the field. Empowering emerging talents is essential for fostering innovation and driving positive change within the industry.

DL: When you have a new design project, where do you start?

TT : When I conceive an idea, whether it's a vivid image or an abstract feeling, I almost always develop a narrative or create an environment for my collection. I find that narrative is crucial to my creative process. Once the concept takes shape, I source fabrics that seamlessly fit into that narrative. Furthermore, I enjoy experimenting with visual elements from my research, incorporating them into my collections through prints, embroidery, or unique silhouettes. Across different collections, my consistent aim is to infuse playfulness and simplicity into my designs.

DL: Do you think design sets the trends or trends set the designs?

TT : I firmly believe that design sets the trend rather than the other way around. Designs that set trends often possess a timeless quality, enduring beyond fleeting fads. Conversely, designs solely driven by trends tend to fade once the trend passes. Therefore, focusing on creating innovative and enduring designs is key to shaping trends that withstand the test of time.

DL: What is the role of technology when you design?

TT : I'm a strong advocate for integrating technology into the design process. Embracing new technologies not only expands one's design language but also enables greater creativity and efficiency. Whether it's exploring cutting-edge performance fabrics or utilizing patternmaking software like CLO3D and Gerber Accumark, I enjoy experimenting with technology to push the boundaries of my designs.

DL: What kind of design software and equipment do you use in your work?

TT : In my design work, I leverage a variety of software tools to bring my ideas to life. This includes widely used programs like Adobe Creative Suite for graphic design and illustration, as well as specialized software such as Gerber Accumark and CLO3D for digital pattern making and garment visualization. These tools play a crucial role in streamlining my design process and enhancing the precision and efficiency of my work.

DL: What is the role of the color, materials and ambient in design?

TT : In my design process, color and material choices are driven by the inspiration or narrative behind each project. However, I approach design with a minimalist sensibility, intentionally leaving empty spaces to create balance and focus.

DL: What makes your day great as a designer, how do you motivate yourself?

TT : As a designer, I consider myself incredibly fortunate to have the opportunity to pursue my passion. What makes my day great is the chance to fully immerse myself in my creative work. Once I experience that deep sense of engagement, it's difficult to walk away and not think about it. This intrinsic motivation is what keeps me going, driving me to continue exploring and pushing the boundaries of my craft.

DL: When you were a little child, was it obvious that you would become a great designer?

TT : No, it wasn't obvious that I would become a designer when I was a child. I was just an average kid, and it wasn't until high school that I began to develop an interest in art. This newfound passion ultimately led me to pursue a career in design.
