DL: What motivates you to design in general, why did you become a designer?

YC : The immense potential of design to transform experiences, convey messages, and influence human behavior deeply resonates with me. What initially sparked my passion for design was a fascination with creativity and the ability to visually express ideas. However, it is the profound impact that design can have on people's lives and interactions that truly drives me in this field. I firmly believe that design is not solely about aesthetics but also a powerful and strategic tool that can greatly enhance the user experience. DL: Did you choose to become a designer, or you were forced to become one?

Instead, it emerged from a genuine fascination with visual communication, a deep admiration for aesthetics, and a profound curiosity about the transformative power of design. YC : An excellent design extends beyond mere visual attractiveness; it encompasses a meticulous fusion of aesthetics, functionality, and user-friendliness. It proficiently conveys a message or addresses a problem, connects with its intended audience, and delivers a smooth user experience. When assessing a design's quality, I take into account its pertinence to the target audience, simplicity, coherence, user-friendliness, and the extent to which it effectively achieves its intended objectives.

DL: What is the value of good design? Why should everyone invest in good design?

YC : The value of good design is immeasurable, as it serves as a potent means of communication, problem-solving, and experience enrichment. It streamlines intricate information, enhances accessibility of products and services, and has the potential to greatly enhance user experiences. Allocating resources to good design can result in heightened customer satisfaction, bolstered brand reputation, and even foster business growth. DL: What would you design and who would you design for if you had the time?

YC : In a world without time constraints, I would eagerly dedicate myself to designing for non-profit organizations that champion causes close to my heart, such as environmental conservation or education. DL: What is the dream project you haven’t yet had time to realize?

YC : An unrealized dream project, due to time constraints, revolves around merging augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR) within UI/UX design. DL: What is your secret recipe of success in design, what is your secret ingredient?

Among them, Paula Scher stands out for her trailblazing contributions in graphic design and the development of brand identities. Don Norman, a true pioneer in the field of user experience design, has greatly influenced the way we perceive and interact with products. Additionally, Yugo Nakamura's inventive utilization of technology in design has earned him a well-deserved reputation as a digital design visionary. The creativity, innovation, and profound impact these designers have made continue to serve as a perpetual source of inspiration for me.

DL: What are your favorite designs by other designers, why do you like them?

YC : While it is challenging to pinpoint specific designs, I am particularly drawn to the simplicity and intuitiveness of Google's user interfaces as well as the bold and iconic branding of Apple. These companies have successfully crafted clean aesthetics, prioritized ease of use, and embraced a user-centric approach. Their designs exemplify the significant impact that well-executed design can have on shaping user experiences and establishing robust brand identities. I greatly appreciate their ability to demonstrate the power of good design in enhancing user satisfaction and brand recognition.

DL: How could people improve themselves to be better designers, what did you do?

YC : To enhance their skills as designers, individuals should maintain an open mindset towards learning and personal development. DL: What were the obstacles you faced before becoming a design master?

YC : Similar to numerous designers, I encountered various challenges on my journey towards mastery in design. There were instances of self-doubt, particularly when a design failed to resonate as anticipated. DL: How do you think designers should present their work?

DL: Which design projects gave you the most satisfaction, why?

YC : Among the projects I've undertaken, the ones that have brought me the greatest sense of fulfillment are those in which I had the privilege of crafting a brand's identity from its inception. The process of delving into the core essence, values, and personality of a brand is truly rewarding. Translating these elements into compelling visual identities through the strategic use of typography, color schemes, and imagery is an invigorating endeavor. Witnessing the resulting identities resonate with audiences and effectively communicate the brand's narrative is an immensely gratifying experience.

DL: What would you like to see changed in design industry in the coming years?

YC : In the years to come, I anticipate and aspire to witness a greater embrace of diversity and inclusivity within the design industry. DL: Where do you think the design field is headed next?

DL: How long does it take you to finalize a design project?

YC : The duration required to finalize a design project can vary significantly, depending on factors such as project scope, complexity, and client requirements. For instance, a simple logo design might be completed within a few days to a week, while a comprehensive branding project could extend over several weeks to months. In the case of a UX design project, which involves activities like user research, wireframing, prototyping, user testing, and iterations, the timeline could span several months. It is crucial to allocate sufficient time for exploration, feedback, revisions, and testing to ensure the delivery of a high-quality and effective design outcome. While efficiency is important, prioritizing quality over speed is a principle I follow in my practice. By doing so, I aim to surpass client expectations and achieve the project's objectives effectively.

DL: When you have a new design project, where do you start?

YC : When commencing a new design project, my foremost focus is on comprehending the problem in its entirety. I firmly believe that effective design is driven by finding solutions, and this begins with a thorough understanding of what needs to be addressed. To achieve this, I engage in detailed discussions with clients, stakeholders, and whenever possible, the end-users themselves. By delving into their needs, expectations, pain points, and goals, I aim to grasp the essence of the "why" before delving into the "how" and "what" aspects. Following this, I embark on an extensive research phase. This entails analyzing the market and competitors, staying abreast of industry trends, and studying user behaviors and preferences. The knowledge and insights gained during this process play a pivotal role in shaping the design strategy. The actual design phase kicks off by creating preliminary sketches and wireframes based on the gathered insights. These initial concepts then undergo iterative design and review cycles, with each iteration refining the design further. I leverage a range of design tools to visualize and iterate my ideas, developing prototypes and mock-ups to assess both functionality and aesthetics. User testing forms a critical part of my process. I strongly emphasize the significance of gathering user feedback at various stages of the design journey to ensure that the final design genuinely resonates with its intended audience. This iterative process of designing, testing, and refining continues until a solution is achieved that effectively addresses the project's goals.

DL: What is your life motto as a designer?

YC : My personal mantra as a designer is: "Design with empathy, innovate with purpose." This concise statement encapsulates my design philosophy, which revolves around two core principles. Empathy serves as the foundation of all my design endeavors, as I believe in understanding users on a deep level. This entails comprehending their needs, contexts, and aspirations, and using this understanding to create solutions that genuinely resonate with them. DL: Do you think design sets the trends or trends set the designs?

YC : From my perspective, the relationship between design and trends is reciprocal and mutually beneficial. On one hand, design has the power to establish trends. As designers, we constantly strive to innovate, experiment, and introduce fresh concepts that captivate the public's imagination, ultimately shaping trends. Examples of this influence can be seen in the adoption of minimalist aesthetics in UI/UX design or the resurgence of vintage elements in graphic design. On the other hand, trends can also shape the direction of design. Design inherently responds to the societal, technological, and cultural shifts that define our era. For instance, the rise in mobile device usage has led to the trend of mobile-first design, wherein designers prioritize creating experiences specifically tailored for mobile platforms. Therefore, as designers, it is essential for us to remain attentive to these trends, as they serve as guiding indicators that inform us of the current zeitgeist. In summary, the relationship between design and trends is dynamic. DL: What is the role of technology when you design?

It establishes visual hierarchy, elicits user responses, and supports brand identity. While materials are commonly associated with physical design fields, they also hold importance in digital design. For instance, the texture and tactile quality of interface elements can greatly impact the user experience. Material design, as pioneered by Google, acts as a design language that merges traditional design principles with the innovative possibilities offered by technology and science. I am eagerly drawn to comprehend the underlying thought process, the specific challenges it tackles, and the inventive solutions it offers. I hold great admiration for the craftsmanship and creativity displayed, and I find myself contemplating how these valuable insights could influence and enhance my own design endeavors.

DL: Who is your ideal design partner? Do you believe in co-design?

YC : The perfect design collaborator, in my view, would share a common design philosophy while offering a distinct set of skills and perspectives. DL: Please tell us a little memoir, a funny thing you had experienced as a designer?

YC : As a designer, I've had my fair share of memorable and amusing experiences. One incident, in particular, always brings a smile to my face. During a brainstorming session for a new project, our team was fully immersed in exploring various design concepts and exchanging passionate thoughts and insights. The atmosphere was charged with energy and creativity. Suddenly, in the midst of our intense conversation, a cup of coffee was accidentally knocked over, resulting in a small spill on the table. Rather than being flustered or frustrated, we all erupted into laughter. The unexpected mishap momentarily broke the seriousness of the moment and reminded us to embrace the unpredictable and find joy in the creative process.
