Design Legends ("DL") had the distinct honour to interview legendary designer Shreya Paliwal ("SP") for their original perspective and innovative approach to design as well as their creative lifestyle, we are very pleased to share our interview with our distinguished readers.

DL: Could you please tell us a bit about your design background and education?

SP : Academically, I am a graduate with a Bachelor's in design, major in Industrial Design. Currently working with medical device company as a Design Lead, I recently pursued HCI from MIT-CSAIL.

DL: What motivates you to design in general, why did you become a designer?

SP : Design for me is a means to Proactive compassion, a search for purpose, a way to explore multiple disciplines and learn new things.

DL: Did you choose to become a designer, or you were forced to become one?

SP : For my profession, I knew I had a knack for a creative career but from the town that I hail from, design is a profession that is seldom heard about or is usually related to Fashion Design. Very few actually knew what a “Designer” does, maybe many still don’t. So, I somewhere knew it had to do with a creative profession but never knew what a designer exactly does, up until my academics in design. Thankfully I had well-informed people around to advise me to take up design as a profession.

DL: What do you design, what type of designs do you wish to design more of?

SP : I love working on projects that are technically complex, challenging, and require skills I aspire to get better at. Such projects are an expressway to gaining knowledge and becoming the next best version of yourself. Although initially the project journey might be filled with many failures and setbacks due to a lack of experience, in the end, growth is maximum.

DL: What should young designers do to become a design legend like you?

SP : Break the hard and fast distinctions between design areas and carve out a Niche.

DL: What distinguishes between a good designer and a great designer?

SP : A Great designer knows and resolves flaws with his designs, even though it may never be visible to another eye ever. A good designer designs for the appreciation of others, A great designer designs till he can meet the eye of the customer.

DL: What makes a good design a really good design, how do you evaluate good design?

SP : The good design never cheats the customer for what it is and what it does, is easy to use and does it's function well.

DL: What is the value of good design? Why should everyone invest in good design?

SP : A bad design may lead to disaster, both life and property, Hence investing in good design is must.

DL: What would you design and who would you design for if you had the time?

SP : I'd design futuristic gadgets including robotics and Mechatronics if I had the Time.

DL: What is the dream project you haven’t yet had time to realize?

SP : Augmented and Virtual reality product designs.

DL: What is your secret recipe of success in design, what is your secret ingredient?

SP : Putting on the shoes of customer to validate if someone would really buy it or not.
