LEGENDARY INTERVIEW

Design Legends ("DL") had the distinct honour to interview legendary designer Hao-Yun, Chi and Hsing-Hung, Chen ("HCAHC") for their original perspective and innovative approach to design as well as their creative lifestyle, we are very pleased to share our interview with our distinguished readers.

DL: Could you please tell us a bit about your design background and education?

HCAHC : I am a Ph.D. in Architecture at the National Taiwan University of Science and Technology. I have nearly ten years of experience in the architectural and interior design industry.

DL: What motivates you to design in general, why did you become a designer?

HCAHC : It is the dream I aspire

DL: Did you choose to become a designer, or you were forced to become one?

HCAHC : I think both of them

DL: What do you design, what type of designs do you wish to design more of?

HCAHC : Architectural design, interior design, space design, etc. This competition is for residential interior design.

DL: What should young designers do to become a design legend like you?

HCAHC : Keep the passion alive

DL: What distinguishes between a good designer and a great designer?

HCAHC : Good designers have very good working skills, great designers have working skills, communication skills, and passion for their work at the same time

DL: What makes a good design a really good design, how do you evaluate good design?

HCAHC : The first point is aesthetics, followed by practicality, ease of use, and what kind of feeling it will bring to the user.

DL: What is the value of good design? Why should everyone invest in good design?

HCAHC : In addition to the value of good design, investors are willing to invest in design, which will bring better design results.

DL: What would you design and who would you design for if you had the time?

HCAHC : Design the house, building, and interior design for myself

DL: What is the dream project you haven’t yet had time to realize?

HCAHC : Just like the answer no.9

DL: What is your secret recipe of success in design, what is your secret ingredient?

HCAHC : Treat each work as if it is designed for me and as if it is the last one.

DL: Who are some other design masters and legends you get inspired from?

HCAHC : Zaha Hadid, MAD, Kengo Kuma,Tadao Ando, Ieoh Ming Pei etc.

DL: What are your favorite designs by other designers, why do you like them?

HCAHC : The original Tokyo Olympics main stadium by Zaha The straight line belongs to Man. The curved line belongs to God. I like works with natural curves or works that embody a sense of dialogue between man and nature, heaven and earth.

DL: What is your greatest design, which aspects of that design makes you think it is great?

HCAHC : In addition to spatial aesthetics and spatial experience, it must also be very practical

DL: How could people improve themselves to be better designers, what did you do?

HCAHC : Continuously absorb new design elements and maintain the passion for design work

DL: If you hadn’t become a designer, what would you have done?

HCAHC : Maybe a construction worker.

DL: How do you define design, what is design for you?

HCAHC : Design is about solving users' problems and giving different values to the design works

DL: Who helped you to reach these heights, who was your biggest supporter?

HCAHC : I think it's design team, construction team, and professor

DL: What helped you to become a great designer?

HCAHC : The pursuit of perfection and perseverance

DL: What were the obstacles you faced before becoming a design master?

HCAHC : Passion for work fades away

DL: How do you think designers should present their work?

HCAHC : In addition to the work, we are actively participating in international competitions for our works, demonstrating the value that can be recognized worldwide.

DL: What’s your next design project, what should we expect from you in future?

HCAHC : Residential interior space design. Perhaps you can only hope that my passion for design work will continue.

DL: What’s your ultimate goal as a designer?

HCAHC : In addition to the design works in Taiwan, I hope to expand the international market.

DL: What people expect from an esteemed designer such as yourself?

HCAHC : Keep doing it

DL: How does design help create a better society?

HCAHC : Design is no longer just a book value, but how to use design aesthetics and knowledge to change the world, a responsibility to society.

DL: What are you currently working on that you are especially excited about?

HCAHC : Combine your design work with Metaverse XR, or display my work through XR to aid in the smooth flow of work

DL: Which design projects gave you the most satisfaction, why?

HCAHC : A work that users or visitors will admire as soon as they walk in the door.

DL: What would you like to see changed in design industry in the coming years?

HCAHC : The ability to integrate human-computer interactive devices to make the design communication process easier

DL: Where do you think the design field is headed next?

HCAHC : Digitalization, Precision

DL: How long does it take you to finalize a design project?

HCAHC : 3~15 months, Depends on the owner

DL: When you have a new design project, where do you start?

HCAHC : Find design inspiration by communicating with owners

DL: What is your life motto as a designer?

HCAHC : Just like the NBA star said, ''Good,better,best, Never let it rest, Until your good is better, and your better us best.''

DL: Do you think design sets the trends or trends set the designs?

HCAHC : Good design determines the trend, and the trend is to drive the design without a soul

DL: What is the role of technology when you design?

HCAHC : To make the design work can be more perfect

DL: What kind of design software and equipment do you use in your work?

HCAHC : Alienware NB, iPad Laser scanner, Sketchup 3dsmax revit autocad Lumion Twinmotion Enscape AdobeCC etc.

DL: What is the role of the color, materials and ambient in design?

HCAHC : Just like a painter's palette, it is ultimately up to the author to create great works through these colors

DL: What do you wish people to ask about your design?

HCAHC : I hope they said, they love it

DL: When you see a new great design or product what comes into your mind?

HCAHC : What kind of life experience can bring such soulful works

DL: Who is your ideal design partner? Do you believe in co-design?

HCAHC : Complement each other and bring good chemical reaction I believe that,Especially after the COVID outbreak

DL: Which people you interacted had the most influence on your design?

HCAHC : Partners who have worked together before, whether they are design teams, construction teams

DL: How did you develop your skills as a master designer?

HCAHC : Take responsibility for your own future

DL: How do you feel about all the awards and recognition you had, is it hard to be famous?

HCAHC : This is a very hard process, So we can't stop

DL: What is your favorite color, place, food, season, thing and brand?

HCAHC : Black and white Beach Churros Spring Sports just like Basketball, Surfing, skiing, bowling, badminton, Fitness

DL: Please tell us a little memoir, a funny thing you had experienced as a designer?

HCAHC : The owner wants to keep doing this work and hopes that I can design his other houses so that I have the motivation to keep going.

DL: What makes your day great as a designer, how do you motivate yourself?

HCAHC : Don't give up easily.When I feel tired, I'll think how hard KOBE has worked to succeed

DL: When you were a little child, was it obvious that you would become a great designer?

HCAHC : Of course not

DL: What do you think about future; what do you see will happen in thousand years from now?

HCAHC : Maybe this job will be replaced by artificial intelligence
