LEGENDARY INTERVIEW

Design Legends ("DL") had the distinct honour to interview legendary designer BOLD Branding ("BB") for their original perspective and innovative approach to design as well as their creative lifestyle, we are very pleased to share our interview with our distinguished readers.

DL: Could you please tell us a bit about your design background and education?

BB : Since early 2000s i started following my passion in design through joining free studies in faculty of arts. I joined as many internships as i can to widen my knowledge and experience. Through practice I started forming my own taste in creating minimal artistic designs. I was highly fascinated by the designs of my older brother growing up, which by time motivated me to be a designer myself.

DL: What motivates you to design in general, why did you become a designer?

BB : design for me is form of expression and inspiration. It is a way of expressing self, emotion, state, product, and it is meant to inspire all who look or interact with it in a way or another.

DL: Did you choose to become a designer, or you were forced to become one?

BB : I chose to become a designer, despite my joining to law school, I followed my dream of becoming a designer by studying Fine Arts

DL: What do you design, what type of designs do you wish to design more of?

BB : I am most passionate about creating new identities. It is the power of creating a big project from nothing. The branding set the standards and image for brands, and it is the most powerful thing.

DL: What should young designers do to become a design legend like you?

BB : to keep their designs genuine and not just follow trends, timeless design always wins

DL: What distinguishes between a good designer and a great designer?

BB : A great designer's ideas are original, a great designer should have his own known style that is like a hidden signature.

DL: What makes a good design a really good design, how do you evaluate good design?

BB : creating a successful hidden language between the design and the audience that they connect or relate to immediately.

DL: What is the value of good design? Why should everyone invest in good design?

BB : Any design is considered the primary communication to the audience, investing in good design is vital to form impactful connection with the audience.

DL: What would you design and who would you design for if you had the time?

BB : I would love to design a book cover for a creative publisher

DL: What is the dream project you haven’t yet had time to realize?

BB : Beauty product design.

DL: What is your secret recipe of success in design, what is your secret ingredient?

BB : being smart in building up the design idea and philosophy

DL: Who are some other design masters and legends you get inspired from?

BB : Amedeo Modigliani

DL: What are your favorite designs by other designers, why do you like them?

BB : I have many favorites but the most recent one is NAMI BANANA SNACK by LOUKAS CHONDROS, i like it because it is the ultimate minimal design for a simple brilliant idea.

DL: What is your greatest design, which aspects of that design makes you think it is great?

BB : my most recent unpublished project yet, Joyeats. The idea of expanded identity beyond limits of only one visual or similar range. It is a creative expression with engaging experience.

DL: How could people improve themselves to be better designers, what did you do?

BB : Not to fall in love with your designs, be your own judge, and make sure that this is not yet your best designs and you always have more and better to offer.

DL: If you hadn’t become a designer, what would you have done?

BB : Become a perfumer. I am obsessed with scents and what they represent.

DL: How do you define design, what is design for you?

BB : Design is smart creative language that comes in many forms and colors between the designer and his audience.

DL: Who helped you to reach these heights, who was your biggest supporter?

BB : My older brother Fr. Arsanios and my agency managing partner and friend Sarah El Kasaby

DL: What helped you to become a great designer?

BB : My own self motivation. With each project I finish, I challenge my self to do a better and improve in the following design.

DL: What were the obstacles you faced before becoming a design master?

BB : To present and insist on working with my minimal designs and direction with clients in a market that is convinced and saturated with other directions.

DL: How do you think designers should present their work?

BB : My best presentation form is the real photography or videography of actual physical samples. it shows the real quality of details and production ideas.

DL: What’s your next design project, what should we expect from you in future?

BB : My conceptual packaging project that is full of joy and delight

DL: What’s your ultimate goal as a designer?

BB : I want to have a clear mark and legacy in what I do, I also wish for my art and work to be inspiring to many young talents

DL: What people expect from an esteemed designer such as yourself?

BB : They expect from me as from any winning designer to always present original art that is functional, sustainable, and innovative.

DL: How does design help create a better society?

BB : to enhance the general taste of the society by creating enhanced designs that represents their reality, and to encourage younger talents to pursue their vision and creative work

DL: What are you currently working on that you are especially excited about?

BB : I am currently finalizing my conceptual project that is very exciting to me. It is not bound to Clients' or market limitations, so it is a very fun & cool project

DL: Which design projects gave you the most satisfaction, why?

BB : aside from the soon to be revealed conceptual project that i am working on, I have to say it is Voilà Cool Stuff. I love this project the most as we got to introduce the ice cream packaging in a new fresh design using minimal lines and abstract shapes describing the flavors in the most playful and intriguing way. This packaging is now one of the most outstanding retail ice cream packaging in the market, and till now it has been an inspiration to many through various platforms such as pinterest.

DL: What would you like to see changed in design industry in the coming years?

BB : I would like to see more design collaborations. I believe that collaborations create the best visions and most evolved art.

DL: Where do you think the design field is headed next?

BB : the design field is evolving through the AI advancement, and i see the future of design will be paved for smart designer who will know how to use the AI to their benefit, save them time and effort to create their own unique and special art.

DL: How long does it take you to finalize a design project?

BB : Around 2 to 3 months

DL: When you have a new design project, where do you start?

BB : first i study the product itself, with all it's experience, then i check competition in the market, then i start to build a philosophy of what i need to deliver through my design, then how i can implement this design in a way that will elevate the customer experience and help the product stand out and lead the competition

DL: What is your life motto as a designer?

BB : We Exist to Inspire Each Other

DL: Do you think design sets the trends or trends set the designs?

BB : Great and timeless designs set the trends... good designs follow the trend

DL: What is the role of technology when you design?

BB : it's role is vital for me specially in my research phase prior to the design phase

DL: What kind of design software and equipment do you use in your work?

BB : i use illustrator and a webos wacom in creating all my designs

DL: What is the role of the color, materials and ambient in design?

BB : it transforms the design and brings it to life.

DL: What do you wish people to ask about your design?

BB : The story and philosophy behind each design.

DL: When you see a new great design or product what comes into your mind?

BB : I appreciate the Idea. It all begins and ends with the good idea and unique perspective of the designer.

DL: Who is your ideal design partner? Do you believe in co-design?

BB : creative product designer such as Philippe Starck or Karim Rashid. I believe that co-design unlocks new design possibilities one couldn't reach alone.

DL: Which people you interacted had the most influence on your design?

BB : my brother Fr. Arsanios, as he is an interior designer, so i grew up knowing all about his art and passion

DL: Which books you read had the most effect on your design?

BB : REALLY GOOD LOGOS explained. By Margo Chase / Rian Hughes / Ron Miriello / Alex W. White

DL: How did you develop your skills as a master designer?

BB : being smart in building up the design idea and philosophy

DL: Irrelative of time and space, who you would want to meet, talk and discuss with?

BB : Georgio Armani

DL: How do you feel about all the awards and recognition you had, is it hard to be famous?

BB : I appreciate every single award that i achieved. It only made me motivated to keep raising my bar.

DL: What is your favorite color, place, food, season, thing and brand?

BB : My favorite color is black with all it's shades, and I am obsessed with everything related to Italy in terms of places, food, and also all my favorite brands are Italian like my all time favorite brand La Heine Inside Us.

DL: Please tell us a little memoir, a funny thing you had experienced as a designer?

BB : I was working with a client and presented 2 logo options, she chose one of the 2 despite our efforts trying to convince her with the second one. I submitted the other logo for Logo Lounge Competition, and it won and published in their 14th book. When she knew, she called asking to change all her identity with the winning logo that we wanted to give her in the first place. We did it for her as she really deserved the winning logo.

DL: What makes your day great as a designer, how do you motivate yourself?

BB : Receiving good news that my work is being featured in any respected design platform

DL: When you were a little child, was it obvious that you would become a great designer?

BB : In a way, it was obvious that i would become a designer. i always had my own unique taste in terms of choosing my apparel, or showing different interest in art and fashion. Being a great designers is something that came with practice, experience, self discipline and motivation

DL: What do you think about future; what do you see will happen in thousand years from now?

BB : I always see a post apocalyptic vision were smart minimal direction will rise among ruins and will create everything beautiful.

DL: Please tell us anything you wish your fans to know about you, your design and anything else?

BB : If i wasn't a graphic designer, i would have became a fashion designer. Al designs around us is a form of indirect and beautiful self expression.
