Design Legends ("DL") had the distinct honour to interview legendary designer Chien Yu Liu ("CYL") for their original perspective and innovative approach to design as well as their creative lifestyle, we are very pleased to share our interview with our distinguished readers.

DL: Could you please tell us a bit about your design background and education?

CYL : I started as an intern in an architect firm when I was a student, and later transferred to a company that imported original Austrian furniture as a product designer and design director of the interior design department. DL: What motivates you to design in general, why did you become a designer?

CYL : Improve troubles and solve problems.

DL: Did you choose to become a designer, or you were forced to become one?

CYL : Self-selected.

DL: What do you design, what type of designs do you wish to design more of?

CYL : At present, most of them are residential space designs. Hope to develop into architectural design in the future.

DL: What should young designers do to become a design legend like you?

CYL : Travel, read, practice more.

DL: What makes a good design a really good design, how do you evaluate good design?

CYL : Is there any improvement in the previous deficiencies? Is it a good experience for users? Is it creating added value beyond the basic needs of users?

CYL : For society: to help people's life more convenient. For the environment: to reduce the ecological burden of the earth.

DL: What would you design and who would you design for if you had the time?

CYL : Sustainable housing that is environmentally friendly and resistant to global warming.

DL: What is the dream project you haven’t yet had time to realize?

DL: What is your secret recipe of success in design, what is your secret ingredient?

CYL : Seek a positive attitude.

CYL : Steven Jobs.

DL: What are your favorite designs by other designers, why do you like them?

CYL : There are many designers I like. They all come from different designs and thinking and creation, which can inspire me more inspiration.

DL: What is your greatest design, which aspects of that design makes you think it is great?

CYL : Solve each client's problems and complete all the good designs for his projects.

DL: How could people improve themselves to be better designers, what did you do?

CYL : Do not forget the original intention, maintain enthusiasm, and have a healthy body.

DL: If you hadn’t become a designer, what would you have done?

CYL : Be a chef.

DL: How do you define design, what is design for you?

CYL : No matter in every field, every era has the mainstream design of every era, but often design is a normal cycle. In the future, with the change of the times and the evolution of technology, the design will be continuously optimized and improved to meet the needs of that era. everything.

DL: What helped you to become a great designer?

CYL : Seek a positive attitude.

DL: What were the obstacles you faced before becoming a design master?

CYL : The design proposal that I am satisfied with is not selected by the client. It has also happened that the client signed the contract but did not complete the payment. That is a very frustrating thing.

DL: How do you think designers should present their work?

CYL : Participate in international design competitions.

DL: What’s your next design project, what should we expect from you in future?

CYL : Nothing now.

DL: Which people you interacted had the most influence on your design?

CYL : I started working in a company that imported original Austrian furniture as a product designer and head of the interior design department. I was the CEO and the head teacher of the department who led me.

DL: Which books you read had the most effect on your design?

CYL : Concentrate on the best of everything.

DL: How did you develop your skills as a master designer?

CYL : We regularly participate in design exhibitions every year to learn about the latest design trends, and at the same time seek newer materials or products.

DL: Irrelative of time and space, who you would want to meet, talk and discuss with?

DL: How do you feel about all the awards and recognition you had, is it hard to be famous?

CYL : The "Deep Root" project is one of our proudest works. We faced a problem of planning a 40-year-old shop building that was structurally unstable and had multiple water leaks into a three-generation house within a limited budget. For the residential space, we tried our best to keep the old structure to rebuild the space, integrated more than 30 types of work, and it took more than 3 years to complete it. In exchange for the satisfied smiles of the client's family, this is a challenging job .

DL: What is your favorite color, place, food, season, thing and brand?

CYL : Earth tones/Roma Italiano/Steak/Autumn/Wedding Anniversary/Apple.

DL: Please tell us a little memoir, a funny thing you had experienced as a designer?

CYL : When I was young, I liked to decorate my own room, not just pasting posters and drawing graffiti, but making big moves to adjust the direction of the bed, the position of the storage cabinet, whether the desk should be against the wall or face the door, etc.. From this I found different conflicts and troubles in the process, so I discovered the wonderful feelings brought about by each change. I like this kind of challenge.

DL: What makes your day great as a designer, how do you motivate yourself?

CYL : Live well. Observe every person and thing in life. Good design comes from life.

DL: When you were a little child, was it obvious that you would become a great designer?

CYL : It looks like this, yes.

DL: What do you think about future; what do you see will happen in thousand years from now?

CYL : Global warming is a serious issue that needs to be faced.

DL: Please tell us anything you wish your fans to know about you, your design and anything else?

CYL : Among our colleagues and partners, we have a core concept of "treat the customer's home as our own home". No matter in design or practice, we must treat each other with care. This is the purpose of our company's business.
