LEGENDARY INTERVIEW

Design Legends ("DL") had the distinct honour to interview legendary designer Heitor Lobo Campos ("HLC") for their original perspective and innovative approach to design as well as their creative lifestyle, we are very pleased to share our interview with our distinguished readers.

DL: Could you please tell us a bit about your design background and education?

HLC : I was born and raised in Brasilia, Brasil. I have a Bachelors degree in Industrial Design by the University of Brasilia. I wanted to be a designer ever since I was 14, it just seemed like the perfect area for me, specially due to its multidisciplinary and creative approach.

DL: What motivates you to design in general, why did you become a designer?

HLC : I wanted to make things, no matter what they were, I loved creating so I got into design with still not much idea of what exactly to make. With time I fell in love with Industrial Design, specially the physical part of it, sketching, prototyping, and finally seeing your project come to life.

DL: Did you choose to become a designer, or you were forced to become one?

HLC : I chose it.

DL: What do you design, what type of designs do you wish to design more of?

HLC : Right now I don't have much of a favorite type of design, although I do seem to gravitate towards lighting design right now.

DL: What should young designers do to become a design legend like you?

HLC : Work hard and take any opportunity you get, it was seeking out Gantri to publish a design of mine that I got a Gold Award at the A' Design Awards. Don't skip on a chance to get your work out in the market.

DL: What distinguishes between a good designer and a great designer?

HLC : Time and experience.

DL: What makes a good design a really good design, how do you evaluate good design?

HLC : Good design fulfills its requirements as a project while still managing to go beyond them.

DL: What is the value of good design? Why should everyone invest in good design?

HLC : Good design has value for everyone, the client, the user, and designers.

DL: What is your secret recipe of success in design, what is your secret ingredient?

HLC : The secret is that there is none. Just hard work and a pinch of luck.

DL: If you hadn’t become a designer, what would you have done?

HLC : A musician I guess, although to be quite honest I'm not nearly a good at it as I am at design.

LEGENDARY DESIGNER

HEITOR IS A PRODUCT DESIGNER FROM BRASíLIA. HE HAS WORKED ON A VARIETY OF PROJECTS—BIKES, WATCHES, WASHING MACHINES, LIGHTS, AND MORE—AND HIS DESIGNS OFTEN REFLECT A SENSE OF PEACE AND JOY. HE IS A BELIEVER IN BEAUTY. “I TRY TO MAKE PRODUCT AS PRETTY AS IT IS FUNCTIONAL,” HE SAYS. “OF COURSE, FUNCTION IS KING, AS THAT IS WHAT THE PRODUCT IS FOR AFTER ALL. BUT THERE IS NO EXCUSE FOR A BLAND DESIGN, WHETHER YOU WANT TO OR NOT EVERYTHING THAT IS DESIGNED HAS A STYLE.”
