Design Legends ("DL") had the distinct honour to interview legendary designer Artem Kropovinsky ("AK") for their original perspective and innovative approach to design as well as their creative lifestyle, we are very pleased to share our interview with our distinguished readers.
AK : I am Artem Kropovinsky, the founder of Arsight, an interior design studio based in New York City. I have been in the field of interior design for over a decade, with a background enriched by a master’s degree in design. My journey into interior design began in childhood, surrounded by a family deeply rooted in the design sphere. This environment was a creative incubator that guided me naturally into my career. Over the years, I have worked on diverse projects globally, which have significantly shaped my approach to design.
AK : Design is the essence of my being, a legacy passed down from my parents who were both established in interior design. Their passion for transforming spaces ignited a similar zeal in me. The desire to create spaces that resonate emotionally and functionally with their occupants drives my work. For me, design is about crafting experiences and narratives that reflect the unique characteristics of the inhabitants.
AK : Becoming a designer was a conscious choice fueled by passion and inspiration from my family. From a young age, I was fascinated by the transformative power of design, and I knew this was the path I wanted to pursue.
AK : At Arsight, we handle a wide range of projects, from luxury residential spaces to commercial interiors. I am particularly passionate about sustainable and innovative designs that incorporate technology and local craftsmanship. I wish to design more spaces that push the boundaries of sustainability and functionality, creating environments that are both aesthetically pleasing and environmentally responsible.
AK : Young designers should embrace a relentless curiosity and a thirst for knowledge. They should cultivate their unique voice and remain authentic, as true originality is more impactful than following trends. Networking, continuous learning, and practical experience are crucial for growth and recognition in the field.
AK : A great designer goes beyond aesthetics to create spaces that resonate emotionally and functionally with their occupants. They possess a deep understanding of materials, sustainability, and the ability to innovate while staying true to their unique vision. Great designers continuously evolve, embracing new challenges and pushing the boundaries of their craft.
AK : A good design seamlessly integrates form and function, offering comfort and a sense of belonging while serving its purpose efficiently. It should evoke an emotional response and reflect the unique character of its occupants. I evaluate good design by its ability to balance aesthetics, functionality, and sustainability.
AK : Good design has the power to transform spaces, enhancing the quality of life and productivity of its occupants. It creates environments that are not only visually pleasing but also functional and sustainable. Investing in good design is investing in the well-being and long-term value of a space.
AK : If I had the time, I would love to design a public space or community center that promotes social interaction and environmental sustainability. Designing for a community allows for creating spaces that positively impact a larger group of people and foster a sense of unity and belonging.
AK : My dream project is to design an eco-friendly, self-sustaining residential community that integrates advanced technologies with natural materials. This project would showcase the potential of sustainable design in creating comfortable and innovative living environments.
AK : The secret to success in design lies in authenticity and empathy. Understanding the client’s needs and aspirations, combined with a genuine passion for design, allows for creating spaces that are both beautiful and meaningful. Staying true to my creative vision and continuously evolving with the industry trends also plays a crucial role.
AK : I draw inspiration from various design legends, including Kelly Wearstler for her bold and eclectic style, and Tadao Ando for his minimalist and nature-integrated designs. Their unique approaches and innovative techniques continue to influence my work.
AK : One of my favorite designs is the Vitra Campus by Herzog & de Meuron. The project beautifully combines modern architecture with the surrounding landscape, creating a harmonious and functional space. I admire the attention to detail and the seamless integration of form and function.
AK : One of my greatest designs is the comprehensive renovation of a historic Brooklyn brownstone. The project involved restoring 140-year-old wood and stained glass windows while incorporating modern technologies for energy and water efficiency. The balance between preserving historical elements and integrating contemporary features makes this design stand out.
AK : Continuous learning and practical experience are key to becoming a better designer. I have always sought opportunities to learn from other professionals, participate in design contests, and stay updated with industry trends. Surrounding yourself with a diverse team and embracing collaboration also contributes significantly to growth and innovation.
AK : If I hadn’t become a designer, I would have pursued a career in architecture or environmental science. Both fields share my passion for creating functional and sustainable spaces that enhance the quality of life.
AK : For me, design is a harmonious blend of form, functionality, and emotional resonance. It goes beyond aesthetics to create experiences that reflect the unique characteristics of the occupants and their surroundings. Design is about telling a story through space.
AK : My biggest supporter has been my wife, Julia. Her unwavering support and objective insights have been instrumental in navigating the challenges and successes of my career. Additionally, the professional community of interior designers has provided inspiration and knowledge exchange that has helped me grow.
AK : A combination of passion, continuous learning, and practical experience has helped me become a great designer. Embracing challenges and staying true to my creative vision while being open to new ideas and technologies has been crucial in my journey.
AK : One of the significant obstacles was balancing multiple roles early in my career, which led to burnout and a realization of the importance of delegation and collaboration. Adapting to new markets and client expectations also posed challenges that required resilience and continuous learning.
AK : Designers should present their work through a combination of visual storytelling and technical details. Utilizing tools like VR and AR can provide clients with an immersive experience, while clear and concise presentations of design concepts, mood boards, and material samples help communicate the vision effectively.
AK : Currently, we’re working on several exciting projects. One of them is the renovation of a historic landmark, a two-level apartment in Park Slope, Brooklyn. This project is particularly fascinating as we will blend the historic elements with a completely new aesthetic that complements the historic environment.
AK : My ultimate goal as a designer is to create spaces that are not only aesthetically pleasing but also sustainable and functional. I aim to leave a lasting impact on the design industry by promoting innovative and environmentally responsible practices.
AK : People expect an esteemed designer to deliver unique, innovative, and high-quality designs that meet their specific needs and aspirations. They also expect professionalism, clear communication, and the ability to manage complex projects efficiently.
AK : Design has the power to create spaces that enhance the quality of life, promote well-being, and foster community interaction. Good design can address social and environmental challenges, creating more inclusive, sustainable, and resilient spaces for everyone.
AK : Currently, we are working on several residential projects, including some in office spaces. For the residential projects, we have begun the design process for a house in Westchester County in New York and are very excited about our approach. The design will be modern with a lot of layers. It won’t be eclectic, but rather a combination of styles that will look great together. There are challenging risks involved, which makes it even more interesting.
AK : The comprehensive renovation of a historic Brooklyn brownstone gave me immense satisfaction. The project involved preserving historical elements while integrating modern technologies, resulting in a space that is both aesthetically beautiful and functionally advanced. Seeing the positive impact on the property value and the client’s satisfaction was incredibly rewarding.
AK : I would like to see a stronger emphasis on sustainability and environmental responsibility in the design industry. This includes using eco-friendly materials, promoting energy-efficient solutions, and creating spaces that minimize their carbon footprint.
AK : The design field is moving towards more sustainable, adaptive, and inclusive practices. There will be a greater focus on eco-friendly materials, flexible spaces that adapt to changing needs, and designs that cater to a diverse range of users.
AK : The timeline for finalizing a design project varies depending on its complexity and scope. On average, it can take anywhere from a few months to over a year, from the initial concept to the final installation and styling.
AK : I start with understanding the client’s vision and needs, followed by extensive research and mood boards to explore different design directions. This is followed by sketches, 3D models, and regular feedback sessions with the client to ensure the design evolves in harmony with their desires.
AK : Design with empathy and authenticity. Every space has its own story, and it’s our privilege as designers to narrate it beautifully.
AK : I believe that true design sets the trends. While it’s important to be aware of current trends, a good designer creates timeless, innovative spaces that influence future trends rather than merely following them.
AK : Technology plays a crucial role in enhancing the design process and client experience. Tools like VR, AR, and 3D modeling allow for immersive visualizations, making it easier for clients to understand and engage with the design. Additionally, technology helps streamline project management and collaboration.
AK : We use a variety of design software, including AutoCAD, SketchUp, and Revit, for creating detailed plans and 3D models. Additionally, VR and AR tools are used for immersive client presentations, and project management software helps keep track of progress and timelines.
AK : Color, materials, and ambiance are fundamental elements that shape the character and mood of a space. They influence how people feel and interact within the environment. Choosing the right combination can enhance functionality, comfort, and aesthetic appeal.
AK : I wish people would ask more about the thought process and inspiration behind the design. Understanding the narrative and the elements that contribute to the final outcome can provide deeper appreciation and insight into the work.
AK : When I see a new great design or product, I think about the innovation and creativity behind it. I appreciate the attention to detail and the thought process that went into creating something unique and impactful.
AK : My ideal design partner is someone who shares a passion for creativity and innovation, with a complementary skill set. I strongly believe in co-design, as collaboration brings diverse perspectives and ideas, leading to more holistic and innovative solutions.
AK : My parents, who were both talented interior designers, have had a significant influence on my design philosophy. Additionally, collaborating with other professionals in the industry and engaging with clients has continuously shaped and refined my approach.
AK : Books on design theory, architecture, and sustainability have had a profound impact on my work. Titles like “Design as Art” by Bruno Munari and “The Timeless Way of Building” by Christopher Alexander have been particularly influential.
AK : Continuous learning and practical experience have been key to developing my skills. Engaging with other professionals, participating in design contests, and staying updated with industry trends have all contributed to my growth. Embracing challenges and learning from mistakes have also played a crucial role.
AK : I would love to meet and discuss with Leonardo da Vinci. His genius in art, science, and design is unparalleled, and his ability to innovate across disciplines is incredibly inspiring.
AK : I am grateful for the awards and recognition as they validate the hard work and creativity of my team and me. However, staying grounded and focused on delivering excellent design work is what truly matters. Fame should not overshadow the passion and dedication to the craft.
AK : I have a deep appreciation for earthy tones that evoke a sense of calm and connection to nature. New York City is my favorite place, thanks to its vibrant culture and endless inspiration. I enjoy Mediterranean cuisine for its freshness and variety. Spring is my favorite season, as it symbolizes renewal and sparks creativity. My sketchbook is my most cherished possession, where initial ideas and concepts take shape. I also admire brands that prioritize sustainability and innovation, such as Patagonia.
AK : In the early chapters of my career, I once tried to don multiple hats – advertiser, web designer, SEO expert, and project manager – all at once. It was a humorous and humbling misstep that taught me the importance of delegation and collaboration. Surrounding myself with seasoned professionals has been one of the best decisions I made.
AK : Seeing a design come to life and witnessing the client’s joy and satisfaction makes my day great. I motivate myself by continuously seeking inspiration, learning new things, and embracing each project’s unique challenges and opportunities.
AK : From a young age, I was fascinated by the transformative power of design. Growing up in a family of designers, it felt natural to pursue this path. My creativity and passion for aesthetics were evident early on, making it clear that design was my calling.
AK : In a thousand years, I envision a future where design seamlessly integrates with nature and technology to create sustainable and adaptive environments. Spaces will be more personalized, responsive to individual needs, and contribute to overall well-being and harmony with the planet.
AK : My work is driven by a genuine passion for creating spaces that enhance the quality of life and promote sustainability. Every project is an opportunity to tell a unique story through design, and I am committed to pushing the boundaries of innovation and creativity. Thank you for supporting and appreciating our work at Arsight.
