Design Legends ("DL") had the distinct honour to interview legendary designer Lin Lin ("LL") for their original perspective and innovative approach to design as well as their creative lifestyle, we are very pleased to share our interview with our distinguished readers.

DL: Could you please tell us a bit about your design background and education?

LL : Master of Polytechnic University of Milan; EMBA, Guanghua School of Management, Peking University; Oil Painting Department, Zhejiang Academy of Fine Arts.

DL: What do you design, what type of designs do you wish to design more of?

LL : As an art consultant mainly serve high-end hotel, also interested in exploring museum planning, curation, public art, new media art, and intellectual property creative design.

DL: What is the value of good design? Why should everyone invest in good design?

LL : The value of good design is an indispensable sense of quality in life and exciting companionship in life. It satisfies the function and creates a sense of well-being. Sometimes cannot measure it because everyone can benefit greatly from it.

DL: What would you design and who would you design for if you had the time?

LL : During the epidemic, people are forced to stay at home and have more quiet time, a concept book, an art narrative, a picture... In addition to work, can design or create for ourselves, for vision or for the future.

DL: How could people improve themselves to be better designers, what did you do?

LL : Learning, thinking, traveling, insight, experimentation, communication, meditation, multi-professional creative resource platform ... The expansion of life boundaries and horizons, the connection of personal ideals and social contributions, make art and design more meaningful.

DL: How do you think designers should present their work?

LL : The best design showcase is to implement the design without modification, and let the design speak for itself. There are also wise choices through award-winning platforms, professional exhibitions and forums! In addition, through publishing, network and new media can also provide designers with a new display space. Publishing can deeply show the designer's inner journey and help people to read their designs more easily.

DL: What’s your next design project, what should we expect from you in future?

LL : Some new hotel series are in progress, and some hotels are involved in the new Winter Olympics. There is also the latest project of the W series. Trying to explore the new media art of artificial intelligence function in the hotel space.

DL: How does design help create a better society?

LL : Design everything that can be designed, create a quality life, balance the natural environment, humanity, sense of humor, and interesting public aesthetics... In a better social creative resource, design is a great contribution.

DL: What would you like to see changed in design industry in the coming years?

LL : As more technology enters the design industry, the boundary between art and design is changing, and people are willing to pay for design. The society respects and appreciates the original design!

DL: Where do you think the design field is headed next?

LL : Constructed around the philosophy of life.

DL: How long does it take you to finalize a design project?

LL : Between 6 months to 1 year.

DL: When you have a new design project, where do you start?

LL : Get start with the project research and find "inner clues". The research was not necessarily to discover narratives whom didn't know, but to re-deconstruct stories that everyone knows. The new deconstruction narratives are the starting point of the overall design activity.

DL: Do you think design sets the trends or trends set the designs?

LL : Tend to design sets the trends. The variables of social politics, economy, and life have an impact on the design. It may form a trend but it is more a contradictory preference. Great designers will think about the logic of variables. Classic design is often a new weather vane, a trend that guides the times

DL: What is the role of technology when you design?

LL : In the design, the combination of emerging materials science, computer technology, nano applications, innovative programs, artificial intelligence, new media art and other future technologies will make the design more creative. Without technological revolution, inspiration will do nothing.

DL: What is the role of the color, materials and ambient in design?

LL : Viewed from the time dimension. The colors, materials and environment have undergone tremendous changes of the times. From this, the designers discovered the mystery of their beauty in different eras, just like pressing the selection key and pause, thereby extending the "freshness" of the design.

DL: What do you wish people to ask about your design?

LL : Everyone has their own interpretation of design. W Hotel Xi'an was born in the historical city, hope to let historical fragments form a landscape in the form of contemporary art in contemporary spaces, in order to explore civilization and become a design medium.

DL: Who is your ideal design partner? Do you believe in co-design?

LL : The ideal partner should be complementary, inclusive, and have different professional advantages. Believed in co-design under the leadership of the core.

DL: Which people you interacted had the most influence on your design?

LL : Professor of Polytechnic University's insight in the field of design is quite impressive.
