LEGENDARY INTERVIEW

Design Legends ("DL") had the distinct honour to interview legendary designer HUIZE/MA ("HUIZE/MA") for their original perspective and innovative approach to design as well as their creative lifestyle, we are very pleased to share our interview with our distinguished readers.

DL: Could you please tell us a bit about your design background and education?

HUIZE/MA : I majored in computer science and technology. I didn't think I would become an interior designer at first. But when I didn't enter this business, I was already interested in designing this industry. I think the designer is very Meaningful career. By chance, I picked up the brush. At that moment, I had a strong love for design, and there were many novel ideas about space. Slowly, design becomes my job, and now is my own business. I often remind myself to cherish and learn to become a more valuable designer.

DL: What motivates you to design in general, why did you become a designer?

HUIZE/MA : The good things and expressions gave me the idea that the design is compatible with the environment. Interest drives me to enter the industry, become a career, and even a career. It should be a sense of responsibility. I want to be a designer who can bring certain value to society.

DL: Did you choose to become a designer, or you were forced to become one?

HUIZE/MA : Choice, I inadvertently touched the design and found it one of the most memorable and very meaningful work categories, so I also want to be part of this industry.

DL: What do you design, what type of designs do you wish to design more of?

HUIZE/MA : I have designed many types of space designs, ranging from large commercial spaces to loving cottages. I prefer to design commercial display platforms, especially real estate projects. I think design can bring a lot of changes in life, and doing a house project can affect a wider range of people, using design to bring a more refined life.

DL: What should young designers do to become a design legend like you?

HUIZE/MA : In fact, I am not a design legend. I also have too many places to make progress. It is very important to be on the ground and step by step. Keep the enthusiasm for learning and earnestly try to touch the touch of design from all sides of life.

DL: What distinguishes between a good designer and a great designer?

HUIZE/MA : A great designer will be a good designer, but a good designer is not necessarily a great designer.

DL: What makes a good design a really good design, how do you evaluate good design?

HUIZE/MA : Idea, concept is very important. Excellent design comes from its own philosophy, good ideas, and good design.

DL: What is the value of good design? Why should everyone invest in good design?

HUIZE/MA : Good design will bring more changes in life, bring more beautiful things and feelings in the heart. A good investment design is also an improvement of the self. Life is better because of design, and life is better because of design.

DL: What would you design and who would you design for if you had the time?

HUIZE/MA : I am an interior designer. If I have time, I can pick a project, vote for the customer, and do my favorite space design.

DL: What is the dream project you haven’t yet had time to realize?

HUIZE/MA : A project that really feels self-recognized.

DL: What is your secret recipe of success in design, what is your secret ingredient?

HUIZE/MA : Be proactive, down-to-earth, and find the balance between business and design.

DL: Who are some other design masters and legends you get inspired from?

HUIZE/MA : Yabu, Kelly Hoppen, JAYA, Tonychi, Zaha, etc.

DL: What are your favorite designs by other designers, why do you like them?

HUIZE/MA : There are a lot of likes, and each product has a place worth studying. I like to study each piece of work and analyze the good and bad. In many cases, I can build some experience to myself.

DL: What is your greatest design, which aspects of that design makes you think it is great?

HUIZE/MA : I have done a lot of work, and I still don't have the best one I think. When every pursuit of my work can be surpassed, it must be a breakthrough than the previous design.

DL: How could people improve themselves to be better designers, what did you do?

HUIZE/MA : I walk more, look more, think more, practice more, try more, and summarize more.

DL: If you hadn’t become a designer, what would you have done?

HUIZE/MA : I don't think I touched the interior design at the time. I think I was just a computer technician.

DL: How do you define design, what is design for you?

HUIZE/MA : The creativity is not bad, the price is not high, the service is not perfunctory, this is my design attitude. Do not avoid style, good at expressing the oriental charm with various styles, creating a comfortable and elegant atmosphere with oriental feelings.

DL: Who helped you to reach these heights, who was your biggest supporter?

HUIZE/MA : Family, colleagues and myself. Family is always the warmest harbor. Colleagues, let me be more responsible, together with the joy and sense of accomplishment, I am very grateful to them for choosing MYP and choosing to stand with me. I also grateful for the obsession in my heart and the expectation of a better life, so that I can always stick to myself and insist on design and progress.

DL: What helped you to become a great designer?

HUIZE/MA : Life and responsibility. Survival and a better pursuit of life are the biggest driving force for me to move forward. After becoming a designer, I feel that I have a lot of responsibilities, and I hope to bring more good designs to the society, to those who need them, and to help them pursue a better life.

DL: What were the obstacles you faced before becoming a design master?

HUIZE/MA : Survival and promotion. The change to me means a new beginning. For me who is not transparent in design, it is harder to upgrade the path. It is better to stick to it all the way and become a better self today.

DL: How do you think designers should present their work?

HUIZE/MA : I don't think that good works don't need to be deliberately displayed, do a good job of the work, implement a good plan, and put it at the project address is the best display.

DL: What’s your next design project, what should we expect from you in future?

HUIZE/MA : The next project is a sales center and a model house project. We are good at this, and this is one of MYP's main creative project types. Our design strives to surpass itself and exceed customer expectations.

DL: What’s your ultimate goal as a designer?

HUIZE/MA : Leading MYP team members to become a highly respected and high-level team of designers, able to communicate with Party A on an equal footing, and Party A will respect our philosophy and cooperate with each other in a friendly and harmonious manner. It is also full of meaning, challenges, colleges and universities, and has a greater impetus to the society, which can positively affect more people.

DL: What people expect from an esteemed designer such as yourself?

HUIZE/MA : Design standards and quality services are a common problem.

DL: How does design help create a better society?

HUIZE/MA : Unquestionable, design drives the society into a better stage. Life is inseparable from design, and good design brings life, besides beauty, convenience and comfort. A civilized society is inseparable from the creation of all designers, re-creation, and design also promotes people's satisfaction from material advancement to spiritual level.

DL: What are you currently working on that you are especially excited about?

HUIZE/MA : Designing a chair, suddenly came to the project, I think it can help my next project become more perfect.

DL: Which design projects gave you the most satisfaction, why?

HUIZE/MA : Designing a new work that goes beyond the previous one, at least makes me feel better. However, at present, I don't have a project that really makes me feel a sense of accomplishment. I will continue to work hard.

DL: What would you like to see changed in design industry in the coming years?

HUIZE/MA : In China, designers can become a profession that is respected and needed. Designers can follow the heart, insist on originality, open their minds, and bring more meaningful projects to the society, bringing more happiness and a better design experience to every customer.

DL: Where do you think the design field is headed next?

HUIZE/MA : The design will be better and finer, and the Internet will push the design industry into life.

DL: How long does it take you to finalize a design project?

HUIZE/MA : This depends on the project. The landing time of the project often determines how long the design can last. If the time is sufficient, you can make more trials.

DL: When you have a new design project, where do you start?

HUIZE/MA : I want to know the positioning of the project, who is using the project, and the culture of the project location.

DL: What is your life motto as a designer?

HUIZE/MA : There is no such thing as luck, and it is all hard work and persistence.

DL: Do you think design sets the trends or trends set the designs?

HUIZE/MA : I think this is two-way and promotes each other. Trends will also guide the direction of the design, and the design style will also lead the trend.

DL: What is the role of technology when you design?

HUIZE/MA : Technology makes the design more perfect and better reflects the designer's solution.

DL: What kind of design software and equipment do you use in your work?

HUIZE/MA : 3dsmax, AutoCAD, photoshop, sketch master, corldrow, etc., of course, also need a certain high configuration to improve work efficiency.

DL: What is the role of the color, materials and ambient in design?

HUIZE/MA : The color gives the space more expression color, the quality of the material determines the texture of the design project, the environment plays a key guiding role, and what kind of environment will bring a certain trend guiding to the design.

DL: What do you wish people to ask about your design?

HUIZE/MA : Being recognized is a happy thing.

DL: When you see a new great design or product what comes into your mind?

HUIZE/MA : The value of the use of this work.

DL: Who is your ideal design partner? Do you believe in co-design?

HUIZE/MA : Love design, have the same design concept, and excellent design ability. Believe.

DL: Which people you interacted had the most influence on your design?

HUIZE/MA : I like to chat with people from all walks of life and get along. They will bring me a lot of knowledge, like a friend who talks with a real estate company about a popular sales office design. He has raised some doubts about the current design, which indirectly changed some of the ideas I designed.

DL: Which books you read had the most effect on your design?

HUIZE/MA : "Interior Design" This is the first time I came into contact with a book. The content is not very systematic, but it makes me more determined to become a designer.

DL: How did you develop your skills as a master designer?

HUIZE/MA : See more successful designs and related books to accumulate theoretical foundations. Arrange time travel, go to see the landmark design around the world, travel will enrich your accumulation of local customs, increase your knowledge and broaden your design vision. Learn all the current software, they will help my design to be more perfect.

DL: Irrelative of time and space, who you would want to meet, talk and discuss with?

HUIZE/MA : Zaha, I was amazed at her creative design.

DL: How do you feel about all the awards and recognition you had, is it hard to be famous?

HUIZE/MA : The awards are all recognition of the designer's design ability. Its existence has certain positive significance, and it also helps the designers to go to people's vision and enhance their popularity. Fame sometimes needs opportunities, needs to accumulate, and is not good.

DL: What is your favorite color, place, food, season, thing and brand?

HUIZE/MA : Gray, gray comes with a sense of high-level, many things in gray will become extremely beautiful. Shenzhen, the second hometown, no matter how far you go, I feel that I will return here. I like coffee culture. I have time to grind myself, make coffee, and feel the sweetness and bitterness of coffee. I like spring, rain, everything is reviving, spring is full of hope, and the year is in spring. I feel that design has just begun.

DL: Please tell us a little memoir, a funny thing you had experienced as a designer?

HUIZE/MA : Aha, I don’t know what it’s fun. However, in the MYP design team, every day is a laughter. With a happy working form, the design of the things will be pleasant.

DL: What makes your day great as a designer, how do you motivate yourself?

HUIZE/MA : Recognizing yourself is the best way to motivate.

DL: When you were a little child, was it obvious that you would become a great designer?

HUIZE/MA : No one thought of it, including myself.

DL: What do you think about future; what do you see will happen in thousand years from now?

HUIZE/MA : This is an interesting question, but I don't think I will know what will happen in the future, but I believe that the society has been improving and the design is the same, and it has been changing people's lifestyles.
