Design Legends ("DL") had the distinct honour to interview legendary designer Abhisaar Saxena ("AS") for their original perspective and innovative approach to design as well as their creative lifestyle, we are very pleased to share our interview with our distinguished readers.

DL: Could you please tell us a bit about your design background and education?

AS : I have completed my BTEC HND in Fashion and Textiles from Edxecel University, UK and B.Tech in Fashion and Lifestyle Design from Mewar University, India.

DL: What motivates you to design in general, why did you become a designer?

AS : The desire to create something that is very expressive and passionate drove me to become a designer.

DL: Did you choose to become a designer, or you were forced to become one?

AS : I chose to become a designer.

DL: What do you design, what type of designs do you wish to design more of?

AS : Currently my design collections are more of ready-to-wear pieces, I am interested to work on couture designs.

DL: What should young designers do to become a design legend like you?

AS : It is important to be steady and focused.

DL: What distinguishes between a good designer and a great designer?

AS : Good designers generally tend to focus on functionality and problem solving. Great designers incorporate the additional element of a meaningful concept and a great product experience.

DL: What makes a good design a really good design, how do you evaluate good design?

AS : A meaningful concept and value addition to the design can elevate a design from being just good.

DL: What is the value of good design? Why should everyone invest in good design?

AS : I believe that the life of a product and the user experience justifies the value of a good design. It is always advisable to invest in a good design as it is a satisfactory purchase and will last you a long time.

DL: What is the dream project you haven’t yet had time to realize?

AS : I would like to come up with a collection that that serves as a tribute to all the wonderful designers that I have been an inspiration to me.

DL: What is your secret recipe of success in design, what is your secret ingredient?

AS : There is no definite recipe to success but if you must know I have two secrets ingredients, ‘exploration and analysis’.

DL: Who are some other design masters and legends you get inspired from?

AS : Alexander McQueen, Stephan Rolland and Issey Miyake.

DL: What are your favorite designs by other designers, why do you like them?

AS : I like the work of designers who portray powerful concepts in the most apt way. The understanding and translation of concept to design is something that impresses me.

DL: What is your greatest design, which aspects of that design makes you think it is great?

AS : I believe I am yet to attempt my great design.

DL: How could people improve themselves to be better designers, what did you do?

AS : I started being a critic to my work and I always review my work honestly to come up with better results.

DL: If you hadn’t become a designer, what would you have done?

AS : Architecture or Space designing

DL: How do you define design, what is design for you?

AS : Design is a creative solution, something that facilitates a function in an innovative manner.

DL: Who helped you to reach these heights, who was your biggest supporter?

AS : My parents.

DL: What helped you to become a great designer?

AS : Patience, study and hard work.

DL: How do you think designers should present their work?

AS : I feel designers should always present their work in the best and most suitable manner, which supports their concept or inspiration.

DL: What’s your ultimate goal as a designer?

AS : I want to live through my designs, and be remembered as a designer that worked with unconventional inspirations, stood for change in the society and promoted empowerment of women.

DL: What people expect from an esteemed designer such as yourself?

AS : People generally expect a lot of innovation and trend-setting designs.

DL: What would you like to see changed in design industry in the coming years?

AS : The quality and literacy rate among the skilled labor.

DL: How long does it take you to finalize a design project?

AS : A few hours or even a couple of days at times, depends on the vastness of the project.

DL: When you have a new design project, where do you start?

AS : Research and story line.

DL: What is your life motto as a designer?

AS : I like to keep it simple. Simplicity I believe is most expressive and can be easily understood too.

DL: Do you think design sets the trends or trends set the designs?

AS : Design sets trends.

DL: What kind of design software and equipment do you use in your work?

AS : I work on the Adobe suite for most of my graphic work.

DL: What is the role of the color, materials and ambient in design?

AS : Design is entirely dependent on color, material and ambient.

DL: Irrelative of time and space, who you would want to meet, talk and discuss with?

AS : Alexander McQueen.

DL: When you were a little child, was it obvious that you would become a great designer?

AS : Probably yes, even though I wasn’t very artistic as a child, I was very creative I would come up with new games, modify toys and had the hardest time shopping since I never liked what the market offered then.

DL: What do you think about future; what do you see will happen in thousand years from now?

AS : I am sure we will be living in a super advanced lifestyle and we would have discovered a solution for all the troubles our planet is facing today.
