LEGENDARY INTERVIEW

Design Legends ("DL") had the distinct honour to interview legendary designer Weizhi Cao ("WC") for their original perspective and innovative approach to design as well as their creative lifestyle, we are very pleased to share our interview with our distinguished readers.

DL: Could you please tell us a bit about your design background and education?

WC : I am a full-time associate professor at the School of Industrial Design, Lu Xun Academy of Fine Arts, China, and is committed to the teaching and research and development of industrial design products.

DL: What motivates you to design in general, why did you become a designer?

WC : I was interested in the development of industrial design in the middle school. Yes, very lucky to be an industrial product designer

DL: Did you choose to become a designer, or you were forced to become one?

WC : Becoming a designer is my dream ever.

DL: What do you design, what type of designs do you wish to design more of?

WC : I designed more of a vehicle design, the future design will cover all aspects of human life.

DL: What should young designers do to become a design legend like you?

WC : I think as a qualified designer, the most important thing is to be keen on the dedication of industrial design, to work in daily life, good at capturing inspiration, looking for product deficiencies, find the problem.

DL: What distinguishes between a good designer and a great designer?

WC : I think the good designer is designing the best design work while the great designer is designed to improve the user's life. The focus will be different.

DL: What makes a good design a really good design, how do you evaluate good design?

WC : I think the first is the design of the product can be accepted by social groups. Products can do the greatest convenience, simple and ecological is a good design.

DL: What is the value of good design? Why should everyone invest in good design?

WC : I most like the design with green energy and public awareness. Because this design is easier to achieve the maximum convenience, simplicity, and ecology.

DL: What would you design and who would you design for if you had the time?

WC : I like to design small products, because small products will be closer to people's daily life. The usage rate will be higher and the product update will be faster.

DL: What is the dream project you haven’t yet had time to realize?

WC : I think in my future I need to study the "virtual reality" technology .

DL: What is your secret recipe of success in design, what is your secret ingredient?

WC : I think the future of the design is everyone's own favorite products, to achieve tailor-made personality requirements.

DL: Who are some other design masters and legends you get inspired from?

WC : Steve Jobs. He pushed the design to the height of the culture.

DL: What are your favorite designs by other designers, why do you like them?

WC : Apple designs products. Apple's simple styling and practical features are examples of contemporary design.

DL: What is your greatest design, which aspects of that design makes you think it is great?

WC : During my college design work: three-dimensional composition unit class works, was adopted by the Dalian municipal government for the theme of sculpture.

DL: How could people improve themselves to be better designers, what did you do?

WC : I am constantly accumulating in my daily life My creative design and design practice in the gradual promotion of the relevant manufacturers to promote the concern.

DL: If you hadn’t become a designer, what would you have done?

WC : I think I will be a teacher.

DL: How do you define design, what is design for you?

WC : I think the design is for people to use, with creative design.

DL: Who helped you to reach these heights, who was your biggest supporter?

WC : I think the happy family makes me harder, my supporters are my favorite wife.

DL: What helped you to become a great designer?

WC : I think the enthusiasm and dedication to the field of industrial design is a major factor in the positive and negative factors of the designer.

DL: What were the obstacles you faced before becoming a design master?

WC : I think the design depends on the accumulation of good life.

DL: How do you think designers should present their work?

WC : I think the designer is able to close the product with the user.

DL: What’s your next design project, what should we expect from you in future?

WC : I think the depth of the implementation of "production and research" to promote. Through the teaching platform more and well-known enterprises to carry out extensive cooperation.

DL: What’s your ultimate goal as a designer?

WC : I think the ultimate goal of the designer is to make the production, use to achieve the greatest convenience, simple, ecological, so as to improve human life.

DL: What people expect from an esteemed designer such as yourself?

WC : I will seriously treat the "design", so that really for human services.

DL: How does design help create a better society?

WC : I think that the field is to more simple, energy saving, ecological direction is an inevitable trend. The future of the design is everyone's own favorite products, to achieve tailor-made personality requirements.

DL: What are you currently working on that you are especially excited about?

WC : I began to study 3D printing technology, materials and technology research to make teaching more fun.

DL: Which design projects gave you the most satisfaction, why?

WC : When I was enrolled in undergraduate, a three-dimensional unit class works, was adopted by the Dalian municipal government as a theme sculpture.

DL: What would you like to see changed in design industry in the coming years?

WC : I think the future of the design is everyone's own favorite products, to achieve tailor-made personality requirements.

DL: Where do you think the design field is headed next?

WC : I think the design field is to the more simple, energy saving, ecological direction is an inevitable trend.

DL: How long does it take you to finalize a design project?

WC : I usually need half a year to a year.

DL: When you have a new design project, where do you start?

WC : I usually consult the relevant information, in my mind to find life experience, and divergence of my thinking to think about the problem.

DL: What is your life motto as a designer?

WC : Love life, attention to detail.

DL: Do you think design sets the trends or trends set the designs?

WC : I think the trend of design is everyone's own favorite products, to achieve tailor-made personality requirements.

DL: What is the role of technology when you design?

WC : I think that technology is an important factor in helping design and implementation, while developing slow technology also limits the design of the development.

DL: What kind of design software and equipment do you use in your work?

WC : I usually use drawing software, modeling software and rendering software. The equipment is a laptop.

DL: What is the role of the color, materials and ambient in design?

WC : I think the design of color materials and the environment is an important factor in the choice of products, good products in these three points are the ultimate, when people use the product to produce a perfect experience.

DL: What do you wish people to ask about your design?

WC : I want people to ask my design, let my design get more people's approval, and these make my work more perfect.

DL: When you see a new great design or product what comes into your mind?

WC : When I see the new great design I will consider its use of methods and techniques.

DL: Who is your ideal design partner? Do you believe in co-design?

WC : Through the “production and research” teaching background and business cooperation. I believe that the common design, play each person's long term.

DL: Which people you interacted had the most influence on your design?

WC : The leadership of our organization has an important guiding role for our team.

DL: Which books you read had the most effect on your design?

WC : I think "design psychology" has the greatest impact on me.

DL: How did you develop your skills as a master designer?

WC : I will take the initiative to find through the daily life of the design point, produce design ideas, and design team to study the design direction, until the product design is completed.

DL: Irrelative of time and space, who you would want to meet, talk and discuss with?

WC : I would like to meet with the ancient Chinese inventors and craftsmen to learn from them.

DL: How do you feel about all the awards and recognition you had, is it hard to be famous?

WC : I am learning from all the awards, and I feel that the design of the service can be famous.

DL: What is your favorite color, place, food, season, thing and brand?

WC : My favorite color is blue, the favorite place is Shenyang, the favorite food is dumplings, the favorite season is winter, the favorite thing is the design, the favorite brand is Mercedes-Benz.

DL: Please tell us a little memoir, a funny thing you had experienced as a designer?

WC : When I get the joy of design results, fun to drink, the United States and the United States to sleep.

DL: What makes your day great as a designer, how do you motivate yourself?

WC : I think the design inspiration to make the burst of emotion, bring design satisfaction, so I continue to inspire themselves.
