LEGENDARY INTERVIEW

Design Legends ("DL") had the distinct honour to interview legendary designer DesignNest ("DesignNest") for their original perspective and innovative approach to design as well as their creative lifestyle, we are very pleased to share our interview with our distinguished readers.

DL: Could you please tell us a bit about your design background and education?

DesignNest : 2016，Master’s degree in Industrial Engineering，DongHua University, ShangHai/China.I had Six years of industrial design learning experience at Donghua University.

DL: What motivates you to design in general, why did you become a designer?

DesignNest : I am very sensitive to the various problems encountered in people's daily life, and actualy I feel that a lot of problems can be solved and should be better resolved.I want to solve those problems in the way designers do.

DL: Did you choose to become a designer, or you were forced to become one?

DesignNest : I choose to （be a designer）, this is one of the biggest choice that I have made which always made me excited and happy.

DL: What do you design, what type of designs do you wish to design more of?

DesignNest : Now I'm doing design of some small products that people often use in their daily lives.I wish to design more of those type which can solve problems in people's daily life , those type which can bring people more convenience and happy. Especially type of Human caring, environmentally friendly, animal friendly design.

DL: What should young designers do to become a design legend like you?

DesignNest : I'm not legend...Just a normal young Industrail designer.Suggest is be kind and be senstive to life , and actively thinking and solving problems which you encountered

DL: What distinguishes between a good designer and a great designer?

DesignNest : Maybe it is similar to the difference of to design products and to solve problems by design products

DL: What makes a good design a really good design, how do you evaluate good design?

DesignNest : Can solve problems in a better way than before.

DL: What is the value of good design? Why should everyone invest in good design?

DesignNest : Can solve problems in a better way than before.Cause good design can help to make people a better life , a better environment and even a better world .

DL: What would you design and who would you design for if you had the time?

DesignNest : I wish to design more of those type which can solve problems in people's daily life , those type which can bring people more convenience and happy. Especially type of Human caring, environmentally friendly, animal friendly design.For example, auxiliary equipment for people with disabilities,Products that improve health problems and quality of life in poor areas，Consumable substitutes for degradable consumables，ect.

DL: What is the dream project you haven’t yet had time to realize?

DesignNest : there are so much project I dream to...I had made a list of them, and the latest one is a kind of special toy for children.

DL: What is your secret recipe of success in design, what is your secret ingredient?

DesignNest : I don't have that thing.hahahahahaha.

DL: Who are some other design masters and legends you get inspired from?

DesignNest : Naoto Fukasawa，PhilippeStarck，Carl Liu，Steve Jobs，ect.

DL: What are your favorite designs by other designers, why do you like them?

DesignNest : MUJI Wall-mounted CD machine，It is a kind of metaphor in Interactive and visual perspective，which make people feel that music is blown out like the wind

DL: What is your greatest design, which aspects of that design makes you think it is great?

DesignNest : LightCube maybe，Light environment is so important, that it should be able to be easily improved and adjusted to adapt to a variety of scenarios' needs, so that it gives users a better living experience. I tried to give a simple and flexible solution that allows users to adjust or create their own light environments.and that is LightCube.

DL: How could people improve themselves to be better designers, what did you do?

DesignNest : I want to solve problems,and I learned how to.

DL: If you hadn’t become a designer, what would you have done?

DesignNest : Maybe...Handicraft makers？Racing rider？Athletes？There are thousands kinds of life that I might try.

DL: How do you define design, what is design for you?

DesignNest : Pooling resources and to solve problem in a appropriate way

DL: Who helped you to reach these heights, who was your biggest supporter?

DesignNest : My University Professor Junming Wang

DL: What helped you to become a great designer?

DesignNest : Study design knowledge and skills conscientiously.Be kind and be senstive to life , and actively thinking and solving problems which you encountered

DL: What were the obstacles you faced before becoming a design master?

DesignNest : I‘m just a normal young Industrial designer... But it really took me a lot of time to learn how to turn a concept into a product that can be produced and sold

DL: How do you think designers should present their work?

DesignNest : Be concise

DL: What’s your next design project, what should we expect from you in future?

DesignNest : It's a kind of special toy for children, I think children of all ages will probably like it.

DL: What’s your ultimate goal as a designer?

DesignNest : To make people a better life , a better environment and even a better world .

DL: What people expect from an esteemed designer such as yourself?

DesignNest : I don’t know.... Cause I 'm a young Industrial and there are still a lot of thing I need to learn.But I will try to make more better products.

DL: How does design help create a better society?

DesignNest : Designers can make better products to save people‘s time and manpower resources , to bring people convenience and improve efficiency and work and life comfort, while some environmentally friendly products can protect the environment to reduce pollution, some special design projects can also guide the crowd's behavior order and even to care and protect the spiritual feeling of people

DL: What are you currently working on that you are especially excited about?

DesignNest : LightCubed expands accessories, which can make LightCube play more versatile

DL: Which design projects gave you the most satisfaction, why?

DesignNest : LightCube...the LightCube allows users to adjust or create their own light environments conveniently.

DL: What would you like to see changed in design industry in the coming years?

DesignNest : I hope everyone in the future can participate in the design of life, as long as they want to.I mean, I hope that the process of design can become more easily accessible for the people who are not designers,so as for a greater extent to allow people to play their own creativity and experience the fun of realizing ideas.

DL: Where do you think the design field is headed next?

DesignNest : More personalized and diversified design forms

DL: How long does it take you to finalize a design project?

DesignNest : It depends, LightCube took me a year.

DL: When you have a new design project, where do you start?

DesignNest : Start thinking from the user's troubles and potential needs.

DL: What is your life motto as a designer?

DesignNest : I believes that industrial designers have the mission to solve a variety of problems ,so as to make people a better life , a better environment and even a better world .

DL: Do you think design sets the trends or trends set the designs?

DesignNest : Design sets the trends

DL: What is the role of technology when you design?

DesignNest : Technology supports the idea into a real product.

DL: What kind of design software and equipment do you use in your work?

DesignNest : Solidworks ，Rhino， Keyshot，Adobe photoshop ，Adobe Illustrator,ect.

DL: What is the role of the color, materials and ambient in design?

DesignNest : Provide safety, comfort, aesthetics and functional strength

DL: What do you wish people to ask about your design?

DesignNest : Ask any thing they want to know.

DL: Who is your ideal design partner? Do you believe in co-design?

DesignNest : Structural engineers and electronic engineers, I am happy to work with them.

DL: Which people you interacted had the most influence on your design?

DesignNest : Yixia Jiang，CPO of Allocacoc.

DL: Which books you read had the most effect on your design?

DesignNest : All the books together

DL: How did you develop your skills as a master designer?

DesignNest : Practise more

DL: Irrelative of time and space, who you would want to meet, talk and discuss with?

DesignNest : My friends from a variety of interesting trades

DL: How do you feel about all the awards and recognition you had, is it hard to be famous?

DesignNest : Awards are a affirmation for the design project,and can help good design to service more people.

DL: What is your favorite color, place, food, season, thing and brand?

DesignNest : Blue,cause this is the color of Sky and sea.Place:anywhere have beautiful sunset.Food:red meat. Season:Autum

DL: Please tell us a little memoir, a funny thing you had experienced as a designer?

DesignNest : Once there was a telephone conversation with a client for a project, and by the end he asked me, are you an electronic engineer? Material engineer? Structural engineers? Finally, I answered, I am an industrial designer.

DL: What makes your day great as a designer, how do you motivate yourself?

DesignNest : To create something，to solve problems.To realize all the whim，Cause this process it so fantastic.I couldn't help to do more

DL: When you were a little child, was it obvious that you would become a great designer?

DesignNest : Not sure ,but I really loved to make all sorts of things by hand when I was a child.

DL: What do you think about future; what do you see will happen in thousand years from now?

DesignNest : People will have their own cool flying craft of transport, everywhere to fly.

DL: Please tell us anything you wish your fans to know about you, your design and anything else?

DesignNest : I will continue to design more and better products to you
