Design Legends ("DL") had the distinct honour to interview legendary designer Mahdy Seyfi,Hesam Ghasimi,Sareh Heidari ("MSGH") for their original perspective and innovative approach to design as well as their creative lifestyle, we are very pleased to share our interview with our distinguished readers.

DL: Could you please tell us a bit about your design background and education?

MSGH : Mohammad Mahdy Seyfi, born in 1986, tehran,Iran,master of art(industrial design). Hesamaldin Ghasimi , born in 1991,tehran,Iran,master of art(industrial design).

DL: What motivates you to design in general, why did you become a designer?

MSGH : I’ve paid attention to details since my childhood and it’s been always a question for me:”what’s the fountain of differences in the productions we use?!”. I always loved the linkage between art and industry. Thereafter, I realized that industrial designing can take me to where I could create these differences myself. The legends of my life were not actors or football players but the designers, and I always wanted to be like them.

DL: Did you choose to become a designer, or you were forced to become one?

MSGH : by my self

DL: What do you design, what type of designs do you wish to design more of?

MSGH : Tasks which should be done for the first time, because we encounter with interesting things in the procedure.Works which have more to do with innovations and we avoid designing stereotype products.

DL: What should young designers do to become a design legend like you?

MSGH : Avoid the stereotypes and make the special method of your own but in law-abiding framework. Try not to be like anybody, you’re unique.

DL: What distinguishes between a good designer and a great designer?

MSGH : The Attitude and the method of using tools.

DL: What makes a good design a really good design, how do you evaluate good design?

MSGH : Evolution, neglecting the financial aspect of the projects, continuous learning.

DL: What is the value of good design? Why should everyone invest in good design?

MSGH : Future & Quality of life

DL: What would you design and who would you design for if you had the time?

MSGH : Ideas for students, the elderly, patients and refugees.

DL: What is the dream project you haven’t yet had time to realize?

MSGH : I’m not allowed to publish.

DL: What is your secret recipe of success in design, what is your secret ingredient?

MSGH : Systematic thinking.

DL: Who are some other design masters and legends you get inspired from?

MSGH : Philippe starck, David Lewis, Dieter Rams

DL: What are your favorite designs by other designers, why do you like them?

MSGH : Lots of projects.

DL: What is your greatest design, which aspects of that design makes you think it is great?

MSGH : A design which presents a mature cogitation and maintains product identity.

DL: How could people improve themselves to be better designers, what did you do?

MSGH : +To be consistent, considering details, making effort for evolution and continuous learning -Sometimes, I get tired of excessive perception and paying attention.

DL: If you hadn’t become a designer, what would you have done?

MSGH : I would die

DL: How do you define design, what is design for you?

MSGH : Systematic thinking, Design is life & love.

DL: Who helped you to reach these heights, who was your biggest supporter?

MSGH : my colleage & also my family.

DL: What helped you to become a great designer?

MSGH : +To be consistent, considering details, making effort for evolution and continuous learning -Sometimes, I get tired of excessive perception and paying attention.

DL: What were the obstacles you faced before becoming a design master?

MSGH : Organizing information, learning new techniques and staying abreast of the latest findings.

DL: How do you think designers should present their work?

MSGH : It could be different depending on the plan but the stereotypes should be avoided.

DL: What’s your next design project, what should we expect from you in future?

MSGH : I’m not allowed to publish.

DL: What’s your ultimate goal as a designer?

MSGH : Creating a personal style and identity in designing.

DL: What people expect from an esteemed designer such as yourself?

MSGH : Ask them.

DL: How does design help create a better society?

MSGH : Implementation of correct way of life.

DL: What are you currently working on that you are especially excited about?

MSGH : A new project and a list of unsolved challenges.

DL: Which design projects gave you the most satisfaction, why?

MSGH : Designing refugee management systems, because we think we are able to help a fellow human being.

DL: What would you like to see changed in design industry in the coming years?

MSGH : Company’s view and avoiding the concentration on earning more interest.

DL: Where do you think the design field is headed next?

MSGH : We must be patient.

DL: How long does it take you to finalize a design project?

MSGH : It differs depending on the type of the design, from hours to months.

DL: When you have a new design project, where do you start?

MSGH : We try to put aside the previous works and start with a new approach.

DL: What is your life motto as a designer?

MSGH : Today better than yesterday

DL: Do you think design sets the trends or trends set the designs?

MSGH : Both are possible, depending on the type of the plan and its background. In the world of designing, there are no biased orientations.

DL: What is the role of technology when you design?

MSGH : Using search and research, we’ll find the future of technologies and utilize them.

DL: What kind of design software and equipment do you use in your work?

MSGH : rhino , speed form

DL: What is the role of the color, materials and ambient in design?

MSGH : These items are the ones that should be considered in middle stages as well as final stages and each one should be initially studied and then used due to the type of work.

DL: What do you wish people to ask about your design?

MSGH : Attitudes and distinctive characteristics

DL: When you see a new great design or product what comes into your mind?

MSGH : Designer’s view of the plan

DL: Who is your ideal design partner? Do you believe in co-design?

MSGH : I strongly believe that designing is a teamwork and you can’t get much individually.

DL: Which people you interacted had the most influence on your design?

MSGH : my colleage

DL: Which books you read had the most effect on your design?

MSGH : Jean Baudrillard books

DL: How did you develop your skills as a master designer?

MSGH : Exercising and updating visual and scientific aspects

DL: Irrelative of time and space, who you would want to meet, talk and discuss with?

MSGH : Jean Baudrillard

DL: How do you feel about all the awards and recognition you had, is it hard to be famous?

MSGH : I’d prefer an indirect fame and hate the way of actors and football players in notability and reputation.

DL: What is your favorite color, place, food, season, thing and brand?

MSGH : Yellow , my studio , DS , every 4 seasons

DL: Please tell us a little memoir, a funny thing you had experienced as a designer?

MSGH : Convincing a client that the choice of his 4-year-old girl can’t be suitable for the final product.

DL: What makes your day great as a designer, how do you motivate yourself?

MSGH : Fantastic music

DL: What do you think about future; what do you see will happen in thousand years from now?

MSGH : Entrust everything to a competent designer and be sure that nothing can go wrong.
