Design Legends ("DL") had the distinct honour to interview legendary designer Wilson Hsu ("WH") for their original perspective and innovative approach to design as well as their creative lifestyle, we are very pleased to share our interview with our distinguished readers.

DL: What motivates you to design in general, why did you become a designer?

WH : My father dedicated himself in shoe business for over 40 years to make good shoes. I was inspired by his spirit and decide to quit from citi bank. After that I started to create my own brand of shoes and design the shoes I like.

DL: Did you choose to become a designer, or you were forced to become one?

WH : I choose to be one.

DL: What do you design, what type of designs do you wish to design more of?

WH : Basically shoes, and I wish I can do more crossover design combine the comfort and fashion.

DL: What should young designers do to become a design legend like you?

WH : Keep working hard in order to make sure one day when there’s chance, you will be able to seize it.

DL: What distinguishes between a good designer and a great designer?

WH : A good designer makes personal imagination come true but a great designer solve others' problem.

DL: What is your secret recipe of success in design, what is your secret ingredient?

WH : Love and Believe.

DL: What is your greatest design, which aspects of that design makes you think it is great?

WH : There is no such things, we're pursuing improvement everyday.

DL: How could people improve themselves to be better designers, what did you do?

WH : Stop what you're doing now for a while and see how beautiful this world truly is.

DL: If you hadn’t become a designer, what would you have done?

WH : Basketball player or a banker.

DL: Who helped you to reach these heights, who was your biggest supporter?

WH : Definitely my father, with his acknowledge, I can realize my design in a proper and easy way.

DL: What’s your next design project, what should we expect from you in future?

WH : A stylish footwear but also very comfortable

DL: What’s your ultimate goal as a designer?

WH : Gathering more talented designers and share ideas together as a great team.

DL: How does design help create a better society?

WH : As a designer, I am aiming at creating more and more footwear that makes people’s life easier and also more eco-friendly.

DL: What are you currently working on that you are especially excited about?

WH : We're going to launch our brand new design to the market.

DL: Which design projects gave you the most satisfaction, why?

WH : Horizon gave me the most satisfaction because it all count on every team members effort to complete this nearly impossible mission.

DL: What would you like to see changed in design industry in the coming years?

WH : Design can be easily apply to our daily life.

DL: How long does it take you to finalize a design project?

WH : It depends. Sometimes it only takes one week, but sometimes it can take me one year.

DL: When you have a new design project, where do you start?

WH : A sketch.

DL: What is your life motto as a designer?

WH : Work hard, play hard.

DL: Do you think design sets the trends or trends set the designs?

WH : I think both.

DL: What do you wish people to ask about your design?

WH : How my design can change people's cognition of footwear.

DL: Who is your ideal design partner? Do you believe in co-design?

WH : We have a whole team and share our ideas as a family, so of course I believe in co-design.

DL: Irrelative of time and space, who you would want to meet, talk and discuss with?

WH : Steve Jobs

DL: What makes your day great as a designer, how do you motivate yourself?

WH : Keep my faith to a better tomorrow.
