Design Legends ("DL") had the distinct honour to interview legendary designer Sameh Ibrahim Emam ("SIE") for their original perspective and innovative approach to design as well as their creative lifestyle, we are very pleased to share our interview with our distinguished readers.

DL: Could you please tell us a bit about your design background and education?

SIE : I studied architecture design at Future University in Egypt, and I learned how to respect nature and deliver comfort to the client

DL: What motivates you to design in general, why did you become a designer?

SIE : my inspiration to work and design for awareness of natural problems and to spot the light on all these dangerous effects of human behavior on nature.

DL: What do you design, what type of designs do you wish to design more of?

SIE : Furniture and products

DL: What should young designers do to become a design legend like you?

SIE : stick to his dreams no matter what

DL: What distinguishes between a good designer and a great designer?

SIE : a good designer who cares about design, a great designer who cares about the user and natural impact

DL: What makes a good design a really good design, how do you evaluate good design?

SIE : by its concept and function

DL: What is the value of good design? Why should everyone invest in good design?

SIE : because good design means good life and good use of everyday things, good design gives life taste and meaning

DL: What would you design and who would you design for if you had the time?

SIE : I would like to design for my country people furniture

DL: What is the dream project you haven’t yet had time to realize?

SIE : No, I don't have a dream project for now

DL: What is your secret recipe of success in design, what is your secret ingredient?

SIE : concept and Gamification

SIE : my teachers and doctors in my university

SIE : my future self

SIE : be kept up to date with all the architectural and artistic work

SIE : creative writing

SIE : the essence of life

SIE : I keep telling myself I'll be something one day

SIE : my teachers and doctors in my university

SIE : learning how to translate concepts and ideas into good designs

SIE : by user's feedback

DL: What’s your next design project, what should we expect from you in future?

SIE : more gamified products and furniture

DL: What’s your ultimate goal as a designer?

SIE : to become the most successful product designer in the world

DL: What people expect from an esteemed designer such as yourself?

SIE : to provide good design with good function

DL: How does design help create a better society?

SIE : by lifting their exceptions to their limits and giving them a new perspective on everyday things

DL: What are you currently working on that you are especially excited about?

SIE : an international competition about gamification

DL: Which design projects gave you the most satisfaction, why?

SIE : my next one ,,, I am very hard to be satisfied

DL: What would you like to see changed in design industry in the coming years?

SIE : I would like to see how AI will affect the design industry

DL: Where do you think the design field is headed next?

SIE : in to nature and environmental perspectives

DL: How long does it take you to finalize a design project?

SIE : depends on the project from 2 days to 2 months

DL: When you have a new design project, where do you start?

SIE : by sketching

DL: What is your life motto as a designer?

SIE : go for bigger dreams

DL: Do you think design sets the trends or trends set the designs?

SIE : design sets the trends

DL: What is the role of technology when you design?

SIE : it comes after the concept and sketching

DL: What kind of design software and equipment do you use in your work?

SIE : Rhino sores and Sketch up + Vray

DL: What is the role of the color, materials and ambient in design?

SIE : the most functional and meaningful

DL: What do you wish people to ask about your design?

SIE : what is the concept behind it and what is your storyboard

DL: When you see a new great design or product what comes into your mind?

SIE : I must go and design something to be that great

DL: Who is your ideal design partner? Do you believe in co-design?

SIE : my young brother

DL: Which people you interacted had the most influence on your design?

SIE : my students

DL: Which books you read had the most effect on your design?

SIE : space form and order

DL: How did you develop your skills as a master designer?

SIE : be kept up to date with all art and architecture work

DL: How do you feel about all the awards and recognition you had, is it hard to be famous?

SIE : not really, it is kind of fun also

DL: What is your favorite color, place, food, season, thing and brand?

SIE : White. My home... Sushi. Winter... Designing... Pepsi

DL: What makes your day great as a designer, how do you motivate yourself?

SIE : by keep telling myself, I'll be something inspirational

DL: When you were a little child, was it obvious that you would become a great designer?

SIE : no of course

DL: What do you think about future; what do you see will happen in thousand years from now?

SIE : robots will help man build a better life

I WAS BORN IN EGYPT, I STUDIED ARCHITECTURE AT FUTURE UNIVERSITY IN EGYPT, I WAS THE SECOND IN MY CLASS AND NOW I'M WORKING AS AN ASSISTANT LECTURER AT THIS UNIVERSITY... I REALLY LOVE MY JOB BECAUSE I LOVE ARCHITECTURE AND PRODUCT DESIGN AND I LOVE TO INSPIRE MY STUDENTS WITH ALL THE BEAUTIFUL CONCEPTS AROUND THEM. I ALSO STUDIED GAMIFICATION BESIDES MY STUDY FOR ARCHITECTURE ,,, ACTUALLY, THIS HELPS ME IN MY PROJECTS BECAUSE I LOVE TO PUT GAMING TECHNIQUES INTO MY CONCEPTS AND TO GET INSPIRED BY GAME DESIGN & THEORIES.
