LEGENDARY INTERVIEW

Design Legends ("DL") had the distinct honour to interview legendary designer Beata Greta Szatmari ("BGS") for their original perspective and innovative approach to design as well as their creative lifestyle, we are very pleased to share our interview with our distinguished readers.

DL: Could you please tell us a bit about your design background and education?

BGS : I have studied Design Academy in Debrecen, Hungary, which I finished last year.

DL: What motivates you to design in general, why did you become a designer?

BGS : My love for fashion and curiosity of how materials become art.

DL: Did you choose to become a designer, or you were forced to become one?

BGS : I choose to become a designer.

DL: What do you design, what type of designs do you wish to design more of?

BGS : I love to design peculiar evening dresses that stand out.

DL: What should young designers do to become a design legend like you?

BGS : I think they should be persistant and believe in their dream, creativity and talent.

DL: What makes a good design a really good design, how do you evaluate good design?

BGS : I evaluate design by the harmony of the different elements create between each other.

DL: What is the value of good design? Why should everyone invest in good design?

BGS : Because design is art, and I think everybody should invest in art.

DL: What is the dream project you haven’t yet had time to realize?

BGS : Exploring different cultural elements of every country in my designs.

DL: What is your greatest design, which aspects of that design makes you think it is great?

BGS : My Ready Folded collection, and I think the use of fabric folding makes it great.

DL: How could people improve themselves to be better designers, what did you do?

BGS : I did a lot of research for my project and didn't give up until I could make my imagination reality.

DL: How do you define design, what is design for you?

BGS : Wearable art.

DL: Who helped you to reach these heights, who was your biggest supporter?

BGS : My lovely husband and family.

DL: What helped you to become a great designer?

BGS : My strong will.

DL: What were the obstacles you faced before becoming a design master?

BGS : Lack of quality materials at an acceptable price.

DL: What’s your next design project, what should we expect from you in future?

BGS : I want to explore my cultural heritage in my next design.

DL: What’s your ultimate goal as a designer?

BGS : To create beautiful dresses for people to enjoy.

DL: How does design help create a better society?

BGS : Design helps as create new things, improve upon the old, innovate and it is a great outlet for creativity. Also I think that design is a form of art and art is important to our society.

DL: What are you currently working on that you are especially excited about?

BGS : I started designing my next collection inspired by my Hungarian heritage, but I'm full of ideas I want to explore in my next designs to come.

DL: How long does it take you to finalize a design project?

BGS : Depends on how complicated the design is. For example a simple evening dress takes days or a week, but my Ready Folded collection took months to finalize.

DL: When you have a new design project, where do you start?

BGS : I start with drawing what I have in mind, and then I search for ways to make it become reality.

DL: What is your life motto as a designer?

BGS : Persistance is key.

DL: What is the role of the color, materials and ambient in design?

BGS : It's the most important part of my design actually. I like to achieve a sense of harmony between the color schemes in my design, and I use quality materials to bring out the most of it. I think that was makes it truly refined.

DL: When you see a new great design or product what comes into your mind?

BGS : What a great idea!

DL: Who is your ideal design partner? Do you believe in co-design?

BGS : I believe in co-designing, but I've yet to find the right partner.

DL: How do you feel about all the awards and recognition you had, is it hard to be famous?

BGS : I'm very thankful for my award, but I've yet to become truly famous.

DL: When you were a little child, was it obvious that you would become a great designer?

BGS : Yes, I knew it since I was a little girl, but I waited until I was 24 to make it become a reality.
