LEGENDARY INTERVIEW

Design Legends ("DL") had the distinct honour to interview legendary designer Todd Watts ("TW") for their original perspective and innovative approach to design as well as their creative lifestyle, we are very pleased to share our interview with our distinguished readers.

DL: Could you please tell us a bit about your design background and education?

TW : I learnt the foundation of my design knowledge from my father, a sign-writer. He taught me about form, balance and type. I performed in many bands and subsequently began working in music marketing and PR. I studied at Billy Blue college of Design in Melbourne and began working soon after.

DL: What motivates you to design in general, why did you become a designer?

TW : Its exciting but mysterious all at the same time. I love realising my design concepts, releasing it to the world and then watching how its perceived.

DL: Did you choose to become a designer, or you were forced to become one?

TW : Initially I didn't realise it was a job. I knew I didn't want to work in my fathers profession until I realised I was naturally good at it. Then more and more I was pulled into design work until it became a career.

DL: What do you design, what type of designs do you wish to design more of?

TW : At the moment I do a lot of branding communications and animation. I love to combine hand-craft with branding and I'd love to do more of that work.

DL: What distinguishes between a good designer and a great designer?

TW : Being brave. Make a stand, believe in something and shout it out.

DL: What makes a good design a really good design, how do you evaluate good design?

TW : I believe good design is easily understood and not exclusive. All good design has a 'smile in the mind' moment where people realise its purpose.

DL: What is the value of good design? Why should everyone invest in good design?

TW : Good design is good business, no matter what business you're in. Its all about clever communication - 'this is my message, whats the simplest way to communicate it'.

DL: Who are some other design masters and legends you get inspired from?

TW : I love the work of SNASK, Beci Orpin and Jack Vanzet to name a few.

DL: How do you think designers should present their work?

TW : With confidence.
