LEGENDARY INTERVIEW

Design Legends ("DL") had the distinct honour to interview legendary designer Natsuyo Ozawa ("NO") for their original perspective and innovative approach to design as well as their creative lifestyle, we are very pleased to share our interview with our distinguished readers.

DL: Could you please tell us a bit about your design background and education?

NO : I start to design club event flyer since I was 17 years old. 21 years old - work at the advertising agency for 3years. 23 years old - work at design firm which mainly design company brochure 25 years old - work at design firm which mainly designs fashion catalog or magazines 27 years old - study abroad to Taiwan to learn Chinese for nine month 28 years old - trip around several countries Europe to see other countries design 29 years old - Enroll to National Taiwan University of Science and Technology to get a degree. - start to work as a freelancer.

DL: What motivates you to design in general, why did you become a designer?

NO : I would like to get less single parent child. and I would like to heal that kind of children's hearts. I would like to this motivate transduction to design elements to put in client work.

DL: Did you choose to become a designer, or you were forced to become one?

NO : I choose myself.

DL: What do you design, what type of designs do you wish to design more of?

NO : Emotional design.

DL: What distinguishes between a good designer and a great designer?

NO : batting average.

DL: What makes a good design a really good design, how do you evaluate good design?

NO : Consider how to used that design by a user.

DL: What would you design and who would you design for if you had the time?

NO : If I have a chance, I would like to design a magazine, which mixed up the physical law in nature and philosophy, but a design like an easy to read. I would like to do it with a team. I think it will be good to suggest a lot of perspective to someone.

DL: What is the dream project you haven’t yet had time to realize?

NO : same as the question No. 09

DL: What is your secret recipe of success in design, what is your secret ingredient?

NO : Physics and philosophy.

DL: Who are some other design masters and legends you get inspired from?

NO : Raymond Savignac! Even He was poster designer but I like his way to express. Bruno Munari I like his way to design. I can feel warm eyes and humor with both of legends.

DL: How could people improve themselves to be better designers, what did you do?

NO : Observation and think the meaning of each element.

DL: If you hadn’t become a designer, what would you have done?

NO : social worker?

DL: How do you define design, what is design for you?

NO : The way of express my ideas.

DL: Who helped you to reach these heights, who was your biggest supporter?

NO : Each senior designer who I work with.

DL: What helped you to become a great designer?

NO : Keep thinking.

DL: What were the obstacles you faced before becoming a design master?

NO : kind of a feeling of inferiority which I hadn't have any design educations.

DL: What’s your ultimate goal as a designer?

NO : Heal someone's heart by my design with the client.

DL: How does design help create a better society?

NO : Observe well the society and design things.

DL: What are you currently working on that you are especially excited about?

NO : Established new dress shoe brand in Taiwan.

DL: What would you like to see changed in design industry in the coming years?

NO : Artificial intelligence.

DL: When you have a new design project, where do you start?

NO : Hearing well the client purpose of that case.

DL: What is your life motto as a designer?

NO : don't give up the shoe and keep working till the perfect.

DL: Do you think design sets the trends or trends set the designs?

NO : Not design itself but media makes it.

DL: What kind of design software and equipment do you use in your work?

NO : Illustrator, Photoshop, Indesign. Camera. sometimes Brackets.

DL: What is the role of the color, materials and ambient in design?

NO : Black and white, Pen and paper, Nature.

DL: What do you wish people to ask about your design?

NO : Concepts.

DL: When you see a new great design or product what comes into your mind?

NO : How that designer achieves that design.

DL: Who is your ideal design partner? Do you believe in co-design?

NO : Depend on the client has how kind of idea or background they have, the result will be different. So well ask client idea and combine my idea to co- design. I believe in co-design.

DL: Which books you read had the most effect on your design?

DL: How did you develop your skills as a master designer?

NO : Read the books and observed nature and society.

DL: How do you feel about all the awards and recognition you had, is it hard to be famous?

NO : I'm simply glad about this awards. But I'm not trying to be a famous.

DL: What is your favorite color, place, food, season, thing and brand?

NO : Favorite color Blue Favorite place river or seaside or mountain Favorite food rice Favorite season Autumn Favorite things walk and dance Favorite brand Nothing special

DL: What makes your day great as a designer, how do you motivate yourself?

NO : Have a nice time to exchange each idea with the client.
