LEGENDARY INTERVIEW

Design Legends ("DL") had the distinct honour to interview legendary designer Ching, Wing Sing ("CWS") for their original perspective and innovative approach to design as well as their creative lifestyle, we are very pleased to share our interview with our distinguished readers.

DL: Could you please tell us a bit about your design background and education?

CWS : I did not study design when I was in University. I studied Business studies and Business Administration. However, I have different experience in different fields, including aviation, eyewear, and fashion. I always mix them together to create my new products.

DL: What motivates you to design in general, why did you become a designer?

CWS : My first collection is "owl" which is my most favorite design. When I launched it and presented in the show, I found many people love it. It attracted many eyes from the markets. Also, this is my first design for my brand, and it brought the first design award for me. It motivated me to do more designs. It is the reason why I started to design more 2 styles (i.e. Hooter and Screech Owl) for the markets. Also, in my last design of Butterfly shape eyewear, I got the Brozne awards from 'A' Design Awards and International Designs Awards. It is the reason why I want to design more beautiful eyewear for people. For this designs, there have many many celebrities, influencers, artists, models, magazine creative designers and editors who they love my designs very much. When seeing their feedback and reactions, I must work hard to make more designs for people.

DL: Did you choose to become a designer, or you were forced to become one?

CWS : I become eyewear designer, because I worked in eyewear industry. I always meet different eyewear designers and the people from eyewear industry for the OEM projects, because I worked in the manufacturing company for producing eyewear to all my customers. During the meeting, we always exchange the designs and structure ideas. It motivated me to design and develop my eyewear. Therefore, I tried to create my brand with my own designs since Year 2011. My first design is named "Owl". This style is very fancy and creative. After launching that, it attracted many people to find. Also, many people love that, especially celebrities and style house in U.S.A. It confirmed my designs and recognized what I did. It motivated me to design more and more.I studied Business Management, not design. Therefore, I would hope to recognize by the official design associations that it could confirm me as designer. As a result, I participated in 'A' Design Awards. Luckily, my designs had been recognized by the jury panels. It is very appreciated.

DL: What do you design, what type of designs do you wish to design more of?

CWS : I want to design more acetate and metal combination products. If there has any other new material, I would like to apply that on my designs too. It is because the main designs concept for me is "Creative".

DL: What should young designers do to become a design legend like you?

CWS : respect on designs and love designs, also love what you are doing.

DL: What distinguishes between a good designer and a great designer?

CWS : Great designer always think more about people' needs during design. Good designer always focus on their own needs or design ideas.

DL: What makes a good design a really good design, how do you evaluate good design?

CWS : Creative and design comfortable for people.

DL: What is the value of good design? Why should everyone invest in good design?

CWS : The good design always recognize by different people who they love it. People always want to buy that.

DL: What would you design and who would you design for if you had the time?

CWS : If I have a time, I do the research. I read different fashion magazine and fashion news website for getting the trend. Also, I coordinate with different material suppliers to find materials for my designs. If there has any new ideas, I will make a draft for further designs and modification.

DL: What is the dream project you haven’t yet had time to realize?

CWS : My dream project is crossover project and collaborate with different brands and different products. I am happy to work with different designers and brands to creative more new products for markets.

DL: What is your secret recipe of success in design, what is your secret ingredient?

CWS : learn more, and respect on designs

DL: Who are some other design masters and legends you get inspired from?

CWS : Karl Lagerfeld is the design masters for fashion. I always see his fashion show, review his designs and get his design ideas.

DL: What are your favorite designs by other designers, why do you like them?

CWS : My favourite designer is Jimmy Choo. He is Chinese, and he is very kind. He loves designs too. Until now, he is still designing shoes for people. His design is fantastic. It is the reason why there has many celebrities to wear his shoes. In addition, he always help share his experience to designers. I want to do the same too.

DL: What is your greatest design, which aspects of that design makes you think it is great?

CWS : My first collection is "owl" which included 3 styles (Owl, Hooter, and Screech Owl). In the beginning, I designed "Owl" only. When I launched it and presented in the show, I found many people love it. There has many people to suggest me to do more styles as like this. Therefore, I started to design more 2 styles (i.e. Hooter and Screech Owl) for the markets. It attracted many eyes from the markets. It is caused that many people start to know my brand and me. In this project, I got much satisfaction. It is because this is my first designs for my brand. Also, this is my first design to win the International Design Awards too. Furthermore, my designs of butterfly shape design was recognized by many people, including the awards associations. It was because this design was gave me 2 designs awards from 'A' Design Awards and International Design Awards in the same year.

DL: How could people improve themselves to be better designers, what did you do?

CWS : read more, learn more, and respect on designs

DL: If you hadn’t become a designer, what would you have done?

CWS : Sales manager for the eyewear manufacturing company.

DL: How do you define design, what is design for you?

CWS : I define "Creative" as design. It is because Creative is the most important for the designer to think more, and make the unique and special designs for people.

DL: Who helped you to reach these heights, who was your biggest supporter?

CWS : My family is my biggest supporter. They always support me what I am doing. It is because I allocated much time on designs and my works always. Of course, the awards are the other most important supporter for me. It motivated me to make more and more design. This is the energy and synergy for me.

DL: What helped you to become a great designer?

CWS : My family supporting is the great help for me that I could become a great designer. Without their supports, I could do nothing.

DL: What were the obstacles you faced before becoming a design master?

CWS : I cannot realize the direction for my career. After getting awards and recognized as design master, it assisted me to have vision for my life career.

DL: How do you think designers should present their work?

CWS : I think designers should present their work by design competition and exhibition. They could learn and earn more during the processes of that.

DL: What’s your next design project, what should we expect from you in future?

CWS : I want to have different collaborations with different brands and designers. It is because I could learn more and more different things from different projects.

DL: What’s your ultimate goal as a designer?

CWS : bring creative designs and comfortable products to people. Of course, I want to motivate people to love design and to be designers if they have a heart to be in this field. It is because design is always important for people.

DL: What people expect from an esteemed designer such as yourself?

CWS : respect on designs and recognize my own designs.

DL: How does design help create a better society?

CWS : bring comfortable, convenience, and creative for people.

DL: What are you currently working on that you are especially excited about?

CWS : I always work on that, because I want to bring more designs for people.

DL: Which design projects gave you the most satisfaction, why?

DL: What would you like to see changed in design industry in the coming years?

CWS : look for more creative projects, not only commercial project or products.

DL: Where do you think the design field is headed next?

CWS : Many people will look for the design with bio-materials. Many people want to protect environment.

DL: How long does it take you to finalize a design project?

CWS : maybe within 1 year.

DL: When you have a new design project, where do you start?

CWS : I will go to library and read and search more fashion ideas for my design concept.

DL: What is your life motto as a designer?

CWS : respect on designs

DL: Do you think design sets the trends or trends set the designs?

CWS : I think that design sets the trends always. It is because the design always bring new things for people, also for the world. People love to have new things. When the new things are recognized by people, it will be the trends.

DL: What is the role of technology when you design?

CWS : The role of technology is engineering and structuring of the designs.

DL: What kind of design software and equipment do you use in your work?

CWS : I always make the new design draft by pencil, and then use AUTOCAD for making the drawing for review.

DL: What is the role of the color, materials and ambient in design?

CWS : Color is the trends for the design and fashion. Materials is the important issue to me for product development, and color selection.

DL: What do you wish people to ask about your design?

CWS : My design concept or design inspiration, because people will know more and love my designs after getting such info.

DL: When you see a new great design or product what comes into your mind?

CWS : When I see a new great design or product, I will think how I could do it better or more. If I could bring more on that for people, it should be perfect.

DL: Who is your ideal design partner? Do you believe in co-design?

CWS : I have no ideal design partner or co-design. However, I always happy to study more about the background on the famous fashion designers or product designers to have more synergies on my designs.

DL: Which people you interacted had the most influence on your design?

CWS : End users are the most influence on my design. In addition, I found that Valentino and Marc Jacobs also made the butterfly shape designs in Year 2019 and Year 2020 after getting the awards for butterfly design in Year 2017. In other words, I created the trend for eyewear fashion already. The world-class famous brand also knew and recognized my designs. Hope that I could have the collaboration with them or other world-class famous brands in one day.

DL: Which books you read had the most effect on your design?

CWS : fashion drawing encyclopedia and fashion magazines are the most effect on my design

DL: How did you develop your skills as a master designer?

CWS : learnt the skill from Italian designer and the engineer in the factory

DL: Irrelative of time and space, who you would want to meet, talk and discuss with?

CWS : Karl Lagerfeld and Jimmy Choo

DL: How do you feel about all the awards and recognition you had, is it hard to be famous?

CWS : The awards is the good stuff to recognize the designer on their works. The most recognition awards should be the good things for the designers who won the awards from these associations.

DL: What is your favorite color, place, food, season, thing and brand?

CWS : I love blue and white. I like Paris, Milan, Roma, and London. I love Italian foods. I like Summer and Winter seasons. I love Chanel, Dior, Chole, Jimmy Choo, Karl Lagerfeld, and Marc Jacobs.

DL: Please tell us a little memoir, a funny thing you had experienced as a designer?

CWS : My first collection is "owl" which included 3 styles (Owl, Hooter, and Screech Owl). In the beginning, I designed "Owl" only. DL: What makes your day great as a designer, how do you motivate yourself?

CWS : respect on designs, and submit designs for the design competition.

DL: When you were a little child, was it obvious that you would become a great designer?

CWS : I didn't obvious that when I were a little child. It was because I expected to be engineer when I was in child.

DL: What do you think about future; what do you see will happen in thousand years from now?

CWS : Designs is unlimited. It is depended on people what they need, and motivate designers to design different products.
