LLT : I hold a bachelor's degree in Fashion Design from Raffles College in Australia. This program provided me with a strong foundation in design principles, aesthetics, and techniques. But my love for learning doesn't stop there. I actively seek opportunities to expand my knowledge and skills. I attend workshops, conferences, and engage in self-study to stay updated with the latest trends and technologies. Participating in design competitions has been a transformative experience. Collaborating with talented designers and industry professionals has opened my eyes to new design concepts and techniques.

DL: What motivates you to design in general, why did you become a designer?

LLT : My motivation to become a designer comes from my inner desire to create and my passion for fashion. Through my designs, I aim to create unique pieces that bring charm and confidence to people's dressing experiences. Thanks to my mother's influence, I developed a strong passion for clothing creation from a young age. I enjoyed making various small projects based on my own ideas. I always had different thoughts about clothes, wondering what it would be like if I made some changes in that aspect. Gradually, I started making my own creations. This process brought me tremendous excitement and fulfillment. Turning my creative ideas into tangible clothing designs allowed me to express my unique style and personality.

DL: Did you choose to become a designer, or you were forced to become one?

LLT : Becoming a designer was a personal choice for me. I was not forced or compelled to pursue this path. It stemmed from a genuine passion for creativity and fashion deep within me. I drew inspiration and received tremendous support from my mother, who served as a role model. Her enthusiasm and love for fashion ignited my own passion for design and encouraged me to pursue my dreams. However, the decision to become a designer ultimately came from my own inner conviction and choice. Being a designer is more than just a profession; it is a means of self-expression and creation. I take pleasure in conveying my unique perspective and aesthetic through my design work. Each piece I create allows me to express my personality and style, which is why I chose to become a designer.

DL: What do you design, what type of designs do you wish to design more of?

LLT : I specialize in designing clothing using combinations of black. I have a fondness for transforming various black items, whether it be fabrics or accessories, into fashionable garments. The monochromatic elegance and versatility of black greatly inspire my design aesthetic. In terms of my aspirations, I am particularly interested in incorporating different technological materials into my designs. I envision creating garments in unexpected ways, pushing the boundaries of traditional fashion. By exploring innovative techniques and incorporating unconventional materials, I aim to bring my design concepts to life in unique and captivating ways. Stay curious and open-minded, always seeking new knowledge and skills to enhance your craft. Keep up with current fashion trends, explore different techniques and materials, and never stop experimenting and pushing your creative boundaries. As a humble designer, I encourage young designers to follow their passion, continuously learn and improve, build a supportive network, stay persistent, and most importantly, create from the heart.

DL: What distinguishes between a good designer and a great designer?

LLT : The distinction between a good designer and a great designer is essential to understand in the ever-evolving world of design. To me, a great designer possesses a level of creativity and innovation that goes beyond the ordinary. They have the ability to think outside the box, challenge conventions, and bring forth fresh and groundbreaking concepts. Their designs captivate and inspire, leaving a lasting impact on the industry. Attention to detail is another crucial aspect that distinguishes a great designer. DL: What makes a good design a really good design, how do you evaluate good design?

LLT : For me, evaluating excellent fashion design, there are several important factors to consider. These elements help determine whether a design resonates and demonstrates excellence. Functionality is a key factor. A design should fulfill its intended purpose and meet the users' needs. Whether it's clothing, footwear, or accessories, they should be practical and provide the necessary functionality and performance. Secondly, aesthetic appeal is crucial in fashion design. An exceptional design should possess visual attractiveness and a balanced and harmonious appearance. Visual elements such as color choices, proportions, lines, and shapes should create a pleasant and visually appealing effect.

DL: What is the value of good design? Why should everyone invest in good design?

LLT : Good design is the ultimate accessory that adds undeniable value to every facet of life. It's the haute couture of functionality, the runway of aesthetic appeal, and the trendsetter of user experience. Investing in good design is like splurging on a designer piece that not only turns heads but also stands the test of time. First and foremost, good design is the epitome of fashion-forward functionality. It's like a perfectly tailored suit or a pair of stiletto heels that not only look fabulous but also serve their intended purpose flawlessly. Whether it's a stylish handbag with compartments for all your essentials or a cutting-edge smartphone with intuitive features, good design ensures that every detail serves a purpose, making your life easier and more efficient. Aesthetic appeal is the haute couture of good design. It's the artistry that turns everyday objects into works of wearable art. Just like a beautifully crafted gown that accentuates your curves and catches the light in all the right places, good design creates a visual feast for the eyes. From color palettes that evoke emotions to sleek lines that exude sophistication, every element is carefully curated to create a harmonious and visually stunning masterpiece. A good design is like a timeless classic that never goes out of style. It's the investment piece that transcends trends and fads. Good design is scalable and adaptable, like a versatile accessory that effortlessly complements any outfit. It maintains its relevance and effectiveness across different media, platforms, and usage scenarios, ensuring that it remains a cherished and valuable asset for years to come.

DL: What would you design and who would you design for if you had the time?

LLT : If I had the time, I would design a collection that transcends the boundaries of reality and explores the realm of limitless imagination. This collection would cater to those who appreciate the ethereal and surreal, allowing them to indulge in the whimsical and fantastical. I would create garments that defy conventional silhouettes and materials, incorporating elements inspired by dreams, mythology, and abstract concepts. Flowing gowns adorned with celestial motifs, shimmering fabrics that mimic the colors of a nebula, and avant-garde structures that seem to defy gravity would grace the runway. Accessories would not be mere adornments but gateways to otherworldly realms. Elaborate headpieces resembling crowns of stars, intricately crafted masks that conceal and reveal, and statement jewelry reminiscent of ancient talismans would complete the ensembles, adding an extra layer of mystique.

DL: What is the dream project you haven’t yet had time to realize?

LLT : The dream project I haven't yet had time to realize is creating a collection of completely handmade garments, where every step from fiber to finished clothing is crafted by hand. I envision combining over a dozen different traditional handicraft techniques to bring these designs to life. In this project, I would explore the rich heritage of various cultures and their artisanal traditions. I would delve into techniques such as hand weaving, hand embroidery, hand appliqué, hand beading, and hand quilting, among others. Each garment would be a masterpiece of meticulous craftsmanship, showcasing the artistry and skill of skilled artisans. The process would involve sourcing the finest natural fibers, such as silk, wool, and cotton, and carefully preparing them for the subsequent handcrafting stages. I would collaborate with artisans who specialize in different techniques, drawing from their expertise to create unique and captivating designs. The collection would celebrate the beauty of slow fashion and the preservation of traditional crafts. It would be a testament to the dedication, patience, and artistry of artisans who pour their heart and soul into each piece they create. The garments would exude a sense of timelessness, craftsmanship, and a connection to cultural heritage.

DL: What is your secret recipe of success in design, what is your secret ingredient?

LLT : My secret recipe for success in design, although the success of my designs remains to be seen, is the incorporation of various traditional handicrafts, such as knitting or crocheting, which adds more versatility to the garments. By embracing these traditional techniques, I am able to create unique and intricate details that give depth and storytelling to my designs. These handicraft techniques blend exquisite craftsmanship and distinctive detail designs, making each design alluring in its own way. I believe that the attitude of respecting traditional craftsmanship and the attention to detail are the secret ingredients in design. This combination of tradition and innovation injects a unique style and taste into my work, attracting attention and resonating with others.

They have left an indelible mark, reminding us of the transformative power of fashion and the boundless possibilities of creative expression. Their unique perspectives and innovative thinking have inspired designers and fashion enthusiasts to explore and create within the realm of fashion.

DL: What are your favorite designs by other designers, why do you like them?

LLT : I am so in love with Iris van Herpen's "Capriole" collection. It is widely acclaimed for its innovative use of materials and stunning designs. It was showcased during Paris Fashion Week in 2011 and left a lasting impression on the fashion industry. The collection featured intricate and ethereal garments that pushed the boundaries of traditional fashion. One of the key highlights of the "Capriole" collection was the incorporation of 3D printing technology. Iris van Herpen collaborated with architect Daniel Widrig to create mesmerizing pieces that seemed to defy gravity and challenge conventional notions of garment construction. The 3D-printed elements added a futuristic and sculptural dimension to the designs, creating a sense of awe and wonder. Furthermore, the collection showcased a harmonious blend of traditional craftsmanship and cutting-edge techniques. Van Herpen's meticulous attention to detail and her ability to seamlessly merge art, technology, and fashion were evident in each garment. The juxtaposition of soft and flowing fabrics with rigid and structured 3D-printed elements created a striking contrast, further enhancing the visual impact.

DL: What is your greatest design, which aspects of that design makes you think it is great?

LLT : One of the designs that I consider to be my greatest accomplishment is a hand-knitted long dress that I completed in 2020. This particular project took me approximately 6-7 months to finish, and it holds a special place in my heart due to the intricate details and techniques involved. The dress was primarily constructed using hand knitting techniques, which allowed me to infuse a sense of artistry and uniqueness into every stitch. The dedication and commitment I poured into this design are evident in the meticulous craftsmanship that went into its creation. What sets this design apart is the use of original patterns that I developed. These patterns showcase my creativity and ability to innovate in design, allowing me to create something truly one-of-a-kind. Each pattern stitch was carefully chosen to add depth, texture, and visual interest to the overall composition. To further enhance the dress’s visual appeal, I incorporated crochet and macramé techniques. This decision added an extra layer of intricacy and craftsmanship to the design, making it even more visually captivating. The combination of these techniques resulted in a harmonious fusion of textures, creating a truly unique and eye-catching piece.

DL: How could people improve themselves to be better designers, what did you do?

LLT : For me, improving myself as a designer is about actively engaging in both practice and observation. While I may have countless ideas swirling in my mind, they remain mere thoughts until they are brought to life through practical implementation. I have come to realize that many ideas, though promising in theory, can be challenging to execute in practice. Therefore, to make progress, it is crucial to take action and put those ideas into motion. To truly enhance my skills, I believe in the power of doing. This means taking on design projects, experimenting with different approaches, and facing the difficulties that arise when trying to bring ideas to fruition. Through this hands-on experience, I learn valuable lessons and gain insight into the practical aspects of design. Each failure or setback becomes an opportunity for growth. By understanding the reasons behind these failures, I can make the necessary improvements and embark on a fresh start.

DL: If you hadn’t become a designer, what would you have done?

LLT : If I hadn't become a designer, it's interesting to consider the alternative paths my life could have taken. I might still work in a bank, as I believe that life offers a multitude of opportunities beyond what we can initially imagine. However, this is not what I desire.

DL: How do you define design, what is design for you?

LLT : Design, for me, encompasses the process of conceptualizing and creating something with a purpose, functionality, and aesthetic appeal. However, these obstacles are opportunities for growth and learning. By embracing these challenges and persisting in the face of adversity, designers can ultimately ascend to mastery, leaving their indelible mark on the world of design.

DL: How do you think designers should present their work?

LLT : Designers should present their work with their own heart, showcasing their unique perspective and expressing what they deeply think through their designs. The presentation of their work should be a reflection of their artistic vision, allowing people to connect with the designer on a deeper level. By infusing their creations with their personal thoughts, emotions, and beliefs, designers can create a powerful and authentic connection with their audience. This genuine expression not only adds depth and meaning to their work but also allows viewers to experience the designer's passion and creativity firsthand. I aim to address real needs, improve experiences, and contribute to a better and more sustainable future.

DL: Do you think design sets the trends or trends set the designs?

LLT : The relationship between design and trends can be seen as a dynamic and interconnected one. While there is no definitive answer, it can be argued that both design and trends influence each other in a cyclical manner. Design has the power to set trends by introducing innovative concepts, pushing boundaries, and offering fresh perspectives. Designers often serve as trendsetters by envisioning and creating new ideas that resonate with people, shaping the direction of various industries. Through their creativity and ability to anticipate and meet evolving needs, designers can influence consumer preferences and behaviors, thus setting new trends. On the other hand, trends can also influence design. Trends emerge as a response to societal, cultural, and technological shifts. They reflect the collective tastes, values, and aspirations of a particular time. Designers often take inspiration from these trends, incorporating popular elements, styles, and aesthetics into their work. Trends can provide designers with valuable insights into current consumer interests and expectations, informing their design choices and helping them create designs that resonate with the target audience. Therefore, it can be said that design and trends have a symbiotic relationship. Designers have the ability to shape and set trends through their innovative and forward-thinking creations.
