LEGENDARY INTERVIEW

Design Legends ("DL") had the distinct honour to interview legendary designer Sahar Madanat Design Studio ("SMDS") for their original perspective and innovative approach to design as well as their creative lifestyle, we are very pleased to share our interview with our distinguished readers.

DL: Could you please tell us a bit about your design background and education?

SMDS : I studied Industrial design in the United States. It was a field I discovered by chance at University, but loved immediately.

DL: What motivates you to design in general, why did you become a designer?

SMDS : Being a designer allows me to imagine, to dream and to solve real life problems all at the same time. The inventiveness of a product designer's journey keeps the day to day so refreshing. But when I am able to make a difference with my work, by combining science with design, and use it to improve peoples' lives, that is truly rewarding.

DL: What do you design, what type of designs do you wish to design more of?

SMDS : Everything from medical devices to, concept furniture to disposable plates. I look at everyday challenges and try to find simple and achievable solutions that are human centered. This is possible by research and a thorough design process.

DL: What should young designers do to become a design legend like you?

SMDS : Be true to the process. Don't make assumptions, rather validate everything by research and testing. This I believe is key, as you are not likely to overlook a user's needs if you've done your homework. And you are not likely to skip on solutions, if you've identified a list of problems that need solving.

DL: What is the value of good design? Why should everyone invest in good design?

SMDS : Good design offers companies so much; It reduces manufacturing cost, be it in packaging or materials, or processes. It also adds value to the brand by engaging with customers and improving their lives. And it gives companies a competitive edge, by allowing them to lead markets, set trends and pioneer in their field.

DL: How do you define design, what is design for you?

SMDS : Design is a marriage between science and art.

DL: What’s your ultimate goal as a designer?

SMDS : To design work that is meaningful and adds value. Markets are saturated with products. I believe that if I want to add something new, it should offer something relevant, needed and responsible.

DL: What are you currently working on that you are especially excited about?

SMDS : We are developing a few new projects that I cannot discuss, but will hopefully be in the market soon!

DL: Which design projects gave you the most satisfaction, why?

SMDS : Designing tableware for the elderly and disabled was a unique opportunity to help a community that is often overlooked. We visited senior homes and met some amazing people that sadly do not have many products to choose from that could make daily activities, as simple as eating, easier and more enjoyable.

DL: When you have a new design project, where do you start?

SMDS : Research!
