LEGENDARY INTERVIEW

Design Legends ("DL") had the distinct honour to interview legendary designer Adel Alserhani ("AA") for their original perspective and innovative approach to design as well as their creative lifestyle, we are very pleased to share our interview with our distinguished readers.

DL: Could you please tell us a bit about your design background and education?

AA : I become from set design and film production design background where I design film environments where design become a storytelling tool .

DL: What motivates you to design in general, why did you become a designer?

AA : I believe that all people are designer in term of making some object into something "functional" , for me designing for films made me question every object and every style while keeping a creative mindset in mind and that gave me no limit other than the concern of this will tell our story or not .

DL: Did you choose to become a designer, or you were forced to become one?

AA : It's more of an organic career I had . I started my joureny since childhood with drawing and after that learned painting , to painting murals meanwhile I had the love for cinema and end up designing the worlds for stories

DL: What do you design, what type of designs do you wish to design more of?

AA : The goal is to design for my culture and for the people . I aim to design things that base on behavior and daily-life studies and needs .

DL: What distinguishes between a good designer and a great designer?

AA : I reed a quote of the Japanese designer Sori Yanagi once that said " true design lies in a real counter to trends ".

DL: What makes a good design a really good design, how do you evaluate good design?

AA : It's what the design says in all its aspect . in the material , the form , the color and texture , even the way people use it or interact with it .

DL: What is the value of good design? Why should everyone invest in good design?

AA : Well , one part of it that good design is timeless but in the same time it carries a narrative about where and when it come from , it's tell us about the social , economical , geographical even the collective's emotional statues .

DL: What is your secret recipe of success in design, what is your secret ingredient?

AA : Being aware of the world around you and keeping honest and ambitious mindset to change .

DL: Who are some other design masters and legends you get inspired from?

AA : The list is very long but Hassan Fathy , Gaetano Pesce , Sori Yanagi , Peter Opsvik , Emilio Ambasz , Alex McDwell .

DL: What are your favorite designs by other designers, why do you like them?

AA : I really like The Up Armchair by Geatano Pecse

DL: What is your greatest design, which aspects of that design makes you think it is great?

AA : I like the Modular designs because it has a spark from the designer that ignites another spark in the user.

DL: How could people improve themselves to be better designers, what did you do?

AA : Again it's the curiosity and honesty fro me .

DL: If you hadn’t become a designer, what would you have done?

AA : I think I will have even more time to paint !

DL: How does design help create a better society?

AA : That is my mission.

DL: What is the role of technology when you design?

AA : It's a tool that we "design" to make our life easier and I use it in that way .

DL: What is the role of the color, materials and ambient in design?

AA : It's a great ways that help us as a designers to tell story about the design .

DL: What do you wish people to ask about your design?

AA : I think each one has different and unique perception I can't think of a something honestly .

DL: When you see a new great design or product what comes into your mind?

AA : The research behind it .

DL: Who is your ideal design partner? Do you believe in co-design?

AA : I believe in co-design

DL: Which people you interacted had the most influence on your design?

AA : The People from my culture .

DL: Please tell us a little memoir, a funny thing you had experienced as a designer?

AA : First time I start thinking about design as a kid when I know that we're making a graduation party for my sister and I couldn't sleep because I kept thinking about the theme of the party

BORN IN THE VIBRANT CITY OF ABHA, SAUDI ARABIA, IN 1997, ADEL'S JOURNEY AS A CREATIVE FORCE BEGAN AT A YOUNG AGE. HIS MURALS NOT ONLY ADORNED THE STREETS BUT ALSO SERVED AS A REFLECTION OF HIS EVOLVING ARTISTIC IDENTITY. IN 2019, ADEL'S JOURNEY TOOK A NEW TURN AS HE VENTURED INTO THE DYNAMIC WORLD OF DESIGN FOR FILM AND TELEVISION. THIS TRANSITION MARKED A SIGNIFICANT CHAPTER IN HIS CAREER, ALLOWING HIM TO MERGE HIS PASSION FOR ART WITH THE STORYTELLING POWER OF THE CINEMATIC MEDIUM. ADEL'S ARTISTIC VISION NOW EXTENDED BEYOND STATIC CANVASES TO THE IMMERSIVE AND COLLABORATIVE REALM OF VISUAL STORYTELLING.
