Design Legends ("DL") had the distinct honour to interview legendary designer Yinghua Lu ("YL") for their original perspective and innovative approach to design as well as their creative lifestyle, we are very pleased to share our interview with our distinguished readers.

DL: Could you please tell us a bit about your design background and education?

YL : My journey in design began with a strong foundation in product design from ArtCenter, where I honed my skills in footwear creation. Throughout my career, I've contributed to projects for globally recognized brands like ANTA and ADIDAS, pushing boundaries in the footwear industry.

DL: What motivates you to design in general, why did you become a designer?

YL : I became a designer driven by my deep passion for footwear, which has fascinated me since childhood. The blend of creativity, functionality, and innovation in footwear design constantly inspires me to create captivating and innovative projects.

DL: Did you choose to become a designer, or you were forced to become one?

YL : Becoming a designer was a conscious choice fueled by my passion for shoes and design. Relocating to Los Angeles and starting at ArtCenter marked the beginning of my dedicated journey into the footwear industry.

DL: What do you design, what type of designs do you wish to design more of?

YL : I primarily design footwear, focusing on projects that blend fashion, functionality, and innovation. I wish to design more innovative and trend-setting shoes that resonate deeply with the market.

DL: What should young designers do to become a design legend like you?

YL : From my perspective, for young designers like me, honing skills, seeking inspiration, and pushing the boundaries of creativity are crucial. Stay passionate and focused, as your dedication will be your driving force towards success.

DL: What distinguishes between a good designer and a great designer?

YL : A good designer creates functional and visually appealing products, while a great designer goes further by innovating and understanding the deeper needs of users. Great designers also push boundaries and create designs that resonate emotionally with consumers.

DL: What makes a good design a really good design, how do you evaluate good design?

YL : A good design effectively solves a problem, meets user needs, and is aesthetically pleasing. It should balance creativity, functionality, and market relevance, ensuring a positive user experience.

DL: What is the value of good design? Why should everyone invest in good design?

YL : Good design enhances usability, functionality, and aesthetics, enriching users' lives. Investing in good design leads to products that stand out, resonate with consumers, and provide meaningful experiences.

DL: What would you design and who would you design for if you had the time?

YL : Given the time, I would design innovative footwear that merges advanced technology with sustainable practices. I'd love to create designs for brands that value cutting-edge innovation and sustainability.

DL: What is the dream project you haven’t yet had time to realize?

YL : My dream project is to create a groundbreaking footwear collection that seamlessly integrates advanced technology, sustainability, and fashion. This project would push the boundaries of traditional footwear design and set new industry standards.

DL: What is your secret recipe of success in design, what is your secret ingredient?

YL : My secret ingredient in design is a blend of passion, dedication, and constant innovation. By staying curious and pushing the boundaries of creativity, I ensure my designs remain captivating and relevant.

DL: Who are some other design masters and legends you get inspired from?

YL : I draw inspiration from various design legends, including those who excel in blending innovation with functionality. These designers set benchmarks in the industry and continually inspire me to push my creative limits.

DL: What are your favorite designs by other designers, why do you like them?

YL : I admire designs that seamlessly combine aesthetics with functionality. One example is the Herman Miller Aeron Chair, which stands out for its ergonomic excellence and innovative use of materials.

DL: What is your greatest design, which aspects of that design makes you think it is great?

YL : My greatest design is the HYPEX creek shoe, which integrates outdoor functionality with hypebeast style. Its innovative elements, such as safety belt-inspired foot lockdown and speed dry materials, exemplify my commitment to merging fashion and practicality.

DL: How could people improve themselves to be better designers, what did you do?

YL : To become a better designer, it's essential to stay curious, continually learn, and embrace feedback. I dedicated myself to honing my skills and seeking inspiration from various sources to evolve my design approach.

DL: If you hadn’t become a designer, what would you have done?

YL : If I hadn't become a designer, I might have pursued a career in another creative field, such as architecture or visual arts. My passion for creating and problem-solving would have guided me towards a path that allows for similar creative expression.

DL: How do you define design, what is design for you?

YL : Design, for me, is the journey of translating abstract ideas into practical, tangible solutions that enhance people's lives. It's a seamless fusion of creativity, utility, and viability, aiming to deliver meaningful experiences.

DL: Who helped you to reach these heights, who was your biggest supporter?

YL : My family and friends have been my unwavering supporters throughout my design journey. Their encouragement and belief in my work have been instrumental in reaching my current heights.

DL: What helped you to become a great designer?

YL : My dedication to continuous learning, passion for innovation, and the ability to blend creativity with functionality have helped me become a great designer. Collaborating with industry leaders and staying open to new ideas also played a significant role.

DL: What were the obstacles you faced before becoming a design master?

YL : I faced obstacles like balancing personal taste with commercial viability and navigating the competitive industry landscape. Overcoming these challenges required resilience, adaptability, and a constant drive to improve. But at the same time is exciting for me to see how it goes.

DL: How do you think designers should present their work?

YL : Designers should present their work with a strong visual narrative that clearly communicates the concept, process, and final outcome. Using a combination of high-quality images, sketches, and prototypes helps convey the design's evolution and functionality. Clear, concise explanations should accompany visuals to highlight key features and innovations.

DL: What’s your next design project, what should we expect from you in future?

YL : My next design project remains confidential, but you can expect innovative and captivating footwear that pushes the boundaries of traditional design. I aim to blend fashion and functionality with cutting-edge technology. Stay tuned for an exciting reveal that will redefine contemporary footwear trends.

DL: What’s your ultimate goal as a designer?

YL : My ultimate goal as a designer is to create footwear that seamlessly combines aesthetics, functionality, and sustainability. I aim to influence the industry by putting in more consumer insights on product. Ultimately, I want my creations to enhance everyday experiences and resonate deeply with users.

DL: What people expect from an esteemed designer such as yourself?

YL : People expect an esteemed designer to deliver innovative, high-quality designs that stand out in the market. They anticipate a blend of creativity, technical skill, and a deep understanding of consumer needs. Consistency in producing trendsetting and functional products is also highly valued.

DL: How does design help create a better society?

YL : Design helps create a better society by addressing practical needs while enhancing aesthetic experiences. It promotes sustainability through eco-friendly materials and processes. By considering inclusivity and accessibility, design can make products that improve quality of life for a diverse range of users.

DL: What are you currently working on that you are especially excited about?

YL : I am currently working on several confidential projects that involve innovative uses of new materials and technologies. These projects are particularly exciting because they challenge traditional footwear design boundaries. The potential impact and the creative possibilities make these endeavors truly thrilling.

DL: Which design projects gave you the most satisfaction, why?

YL : The HYPEX creek shoe project gave me the most satisfaction. It successfully integrated outdoor functionality with hypebeast style, offering a unique blend of fashion and practicality. The innovative use of safety belt-inspired elements and speed dry materials exemplifies my design philosophy and dedication to pushing boundaries.

DL: What would you like to see changed in design industry in the coming years?

YL : I would like to see a greater emphasis on sustainability and ethical production practices in the design industry. More focus on inclusivity and accessibility in design would also be beneficial. Additionally, increased collaboration between designers and technologists could drive innovation further.

DL: Where do you think the design field is headed next?

YL : The design field is headed towards greater integration with technology, including AI and machine learning for personalized products. There will be a stronger focus on sustainability, with circular design principles becoming mainstream. User-centered design will continue to play a central role, emphasizing empathy and inclusivity.

DL: How long does it take you to finalize a design project?

YL : Finalizing a design project typically takes several weeks to several months. The duration depends on the project's complexity and the iterative nature of the design process. Thorough research, prototyping, and multiple rounds of feedback are crucial to ensuring the final product meets high standards of creativity and functionality.

DL: When you have a new design project, where do you start?

YL : When I start a new design project, I begin with thorough observation and research to understand current market trends and consumer needs. This initial phase helps me gather insights and inspiration. From there, I move on to ideation and sketching, followed by prototyping.

DL: What is your life motto as a designer?

YL : My life motto as a designer is, "Your passion will indeed be your driving force." This belief keeps me focused on honing my skills, seeking inspiration, and pushing the boundaries of creativity in my designs.

DL: Do you think design sets the trends or trends set the designs?

YL : I believe design sets the trends. Designers have the power to influence and shape consumer preferences through innovative and compelling creations. While trends provide valuable insights, it is the designers' creativity that ultimately drives new trends.

DL: What is the role of technology when you design?

YL : Technology plays a crucial role in my design process, allowing for precise modeling and prototyping. Tools like 3D design software enhance creativity and efficiency. They enable me to visualize and iterate on designs, making the process more dynamic and engaging.

DL: What kind of design software and equipment do you use in your work?

YL : I use Adobe Creative Suite (Illustrator, Photoshop, InDesign) for digital design, and Rhino and Blender for 3D modeling. My equipment includes a high-performance computer and a Wacom tablet. These tools help bring my innovative footwear designs to life.

DL: What is the role of the color, materials and ambient in design?

YL : Color, materials, and ambiance play a vital role in design by influencing aesthetics, functionality, and user experience. They help create visually appealing and practical products. The choice of materials also impacts sustainability and performance.

DL: What do you wish people to ask about your design?

YL : I wish people would ask about the inspiration and thought process behind my designs. Understanding the journey from concept to final product reveals the creativity and innovation involved. It highlights the unique storytelling elements embedded in each design.

DL: When you see a new great design or product what comes into your mind?

YL : When I see a new great design or product, I think about the innovation and creativity that went into it. I consider how it addresses user needs and stands out in the market. It also inspires me to push my own design boundaries further.

DL: Who is your ideal design partner? Do you believe in co-design?

YL : My ideal design partner is someone who shares my passion for innovation and has complementary skills. I believe in co-design as it fosters collaboration and brings diverse perspectives. This synergy can lead to more refined and impactful designs.

DL: Which people you interacted had the most influence on your design?

YL : My family and friends have had the most influence on my design journey. Their unwavering support and belief in my work continue to inspire and drive me forward. Additionally, working in experienced teams at ANTA and ADIDAS has been invaluable in honing my skills and understanding industry standards.

DL: Which books you read had the most effect on your design?

YL : Design theory books have had the most significant impact on my design approach. They provide insights into the principles of aesthetics, functionality, and user experience. These resources continually inspire me to refine my skills and push creative boundaries.

DL: How did you develop your skills as a master designer?

YL : I developed my skills through a combination of formal education at ArtCenter and hands-on experience with globally recognized brands like ANTA and ADIDAS. Continuous learning and staying updated with industry trends also play a crucial role. My passion for footwear design drives me to constantly improve and innovate.

DL: Irrelative of time and space, who you would want to meet, talk and discuss with?

YL : I would love to meet and discuss with Tiffany Beers. She is renowned for her significant contributions to the footwear industry, particularly in innovation and product design. Known for her work at Nike, Tiffany was instrumental in developing iconic products like the Nike MAG and Nike HyperAdapt, seamlessly integrating technology and design, which is a constant source of inspiration for me.

DL: How do you feel about all the awards and recognition you had, is it hard to be famous?

YL : Receiving awards and recognition, like the Reddot award concept design, Muse award, NY Product Design Award, is incredibly rewarding and validating. It motivates me to continue pushing boundaries in my designs. However, staying grounded and focused on my passion is essential, rather than getting overwhelmed by fame.

DL: What is your favorite color, place, food, season, thing and brand?

YL : My favorite color is a blend of subtle shades, reflecting my attention to detail. I love New York City for its vibrant energy and endless inspiration. My favorite food is a well-crafted dish that combines tradition with innovation, much like my approach to design.

DL: Please tell us a little memoir, a funny thing you had experienced as a designer?

YL : One memorable moment was when I drew inspiration from a meme for a design project. It taught me that creativity can be sparked by anything, even the most unexpected sources like internet humor.

DL: What makes your day great as a designer, how do you motivate yourself?

YL : A great day as a designer involves successful brainstorming sessions and seeing my ideas come to life. I motivate myself by constantly seeking inspiration from nature, culture, and technology. The thrill of innovation and the satisfaction of creating something new keep me driven.

DL: When you were a little child, was it obvious that you would become a great designer?

YL : As a child, my fascination with shoes and constant observation of trends hinted at my future in design. My early passion for footwear was a clear indicator. This enthusiasm naturally evolved into a dedicated career in footwear design.

DL: What do you think about future; what do you see will happen in thousand years from now?

YL : In a thousand years, I envision design being deeply integrated with advanced technology, creating personalized and adaptive products. Sustainability will be a core focus, with eco-friendly materials and circular design principles becoming standard. The role of designers will expand to include shaping a more inclusive and sustainable world.

DL: Please tell us anything you wish your fans to know about you, your design and anything else?

YL : I want my fans to know that my designs are a blend of passion, cultural influences, and innovative technology.
