Design Legends ("DL") had the distinct honour to interview legendary designer Elizaveta Oputina ("EO") for their original perspective and innovative approach to design as well as their creative lifestyle, we are very pleased to share our interview with our distinguished readers.
DL: Could you please tell us a bit about your design background and education?
EO : From a young age, creativity was my preferred pursuit over social interactions, and I always aspired to be an artist or designer. When it came time to choose a profession, I selected architecture, as it seemed both vast and fascinating. After graduating from university, I transitioned to interior design, finding it a better fit for me. I enjoy the numerous ways it allows for self-expression and making impactful statements. Currently, I'm deeply immersed in exploring AI and its integration into the fields of design and architecture.
DL: What motivates you to design in general, why did you become a designer?
EO : My motivation to design comes from a lifelong passion for creativity and the desire to transform spaces. I've always been driven by the potential to blend aesthetics with functionality, making environments not only beautiful but also purposeful. This passion led me to become a designer, where I can continuously explore new ideas and bring unique visions to life.
DL: Did you choose to become a designer, or you were forced to become one?
EO : I chose to become a designer out of my own passion and interest. From a young age, I was drawn to creativity and design, which naturally led me to pursue a career in this field. The choice was driven by my love for transforming spaces and the joy I find in the design process.
DL: What do you design, what type of designs do you wish to design more of?
EO : I specialize in interior design and 3D visualization, creating visually compelling and functional spaces. I wish to design more public spaces, as they offer greater freedom for creativity and innovation.
DL: What should young designers do to become a design legend like you?
EO : Young designers should continually seek inspiration, stay curious, and never stop learning. Building a strong portfolio, networking, and being open to feedback are essential. Embrace new technologies, like AI, to stay ahead of industry trends and always strive for innovation in your designs.
DL: What distinguishes between a good designer and a great designer?
EO : A good designer creates functional and aesthetically pleasing designs that meet client needs. A great designer goes beyond by innovating, pushing boundaries, and creating designs that inspire, evoke emotions, and leave a lasting impact. Great designers also continuously adapt, learn, and stay ahead of trends, blending creativity with a deep understanding of user experience and cultural context.
DL: What makes a good design a really good design, how do you evaluate good design?
EO : A good design becomes a really good design when it seamlessly blends functionality, aesthetics, and user experience.
DL: What is the value of good design? Why should everyone invest in good design?
EO : Good design enhances functionality, aesthetics, and user experience, making products and spaces more enjoyable and efficient. Investing in good design leads to better user satisfaction, increased productivity, and long-term value.
DL: What is the dream project you haven’t yet had time to realize?
EO : I dream of designing a sustainable, eco-friendly community space that seamlessly integrates nature and technology, promoting a harmonious and innovative living environment.
DL: Who are some other design masters and legends you get inspired from?
EO : I get inspired by design masters like Alvar Aalto, Frank Lloyd Wright, and Tadao Ando for their innovative approaches and ability to blend functionality with beauty.
DL: What are your favorite designs by other designers, why do you like them?
EO : I get inspired by design masters like Alvar Aalto, Tadao Ando, Bjarke Ingels,and Jean Nouvel as architects. From designers, Gary Nuriev inspires me with his innovative and original approach to design.
