LEGENDARY INTERVIEW

Design Legends ("DL") had the distinct honour to interview legendary designer Sanda Strugar ("SS") for their original perspective and innovative approach to design as well as their creative lifestyle, we are very pleased to share our interview with our distinguished readers.

DL: Could you please tell us a bit about your design background and education?

SS : I enrolled at the Faculty of Architecture in Podgorica, where I specialized in urban planning. During my specialization, I decided to explore the field of jewelry design. Up until then, I had created many personal designs that remained just for me. This transition allowed me to channel my architectural knowledge and creativity into crafting unique and intricate pieces of jewelry. My background in architecture has greatly influenced my design approach, bringing a structured yet innovative perspective to my jewelry creations.

DL: What motivates you to design in general, why did you become a designer?

SS : I am motivated by the diversity and dynamic nature of design. Becoming a designer was the only way I could truly express my essence and nature. The ability to create unique, meaningful pieces that reflect both my vision and the individuality of my clients drives me every day. Design allows me to bring beauty into the world and to share a part of myself through my creations.

DL: Did you choose to become a designer, or you were forced to become one?

SS : If others had their way, I would have pursued a career in architecture, for which I studied. However, my soul chose design.

DL: What do you design, what type of designs do you wish to design more of?

SS : I design jewelry, and I am fortunate to already be creating the pieces I dream of. However, I am always excited about designing things I haven't yet imagined are possible. My goal is to continuously challenge and surpass myself, exploring new realms of creativity and innovation.

DL: What should young designers do to become a design legend like you?

SS : Young designers should listen to themselves, not the surroundings. If they find their true calling, they need to be persistent and dedicated. By staying true to their vision and continuously working hard, they will eventually receive all the accompanying benefits, including the title of a design legend.

DL: What distinguishes between a good designer and a great designer?

SS : A good designer creates functional and aesthetically pleasing designs, meeting the client’s needs and expectations. However, a great designer goes beyond that—they innovate and push the boundaries of creativity. A great designer listens deeply to their clients but also brings their own unique vision and expertise to the table, creating designs that are not only beautiful and functional but also evoke emotion and tell a story. They continuously seek inspiration, embrace feedback, and are always evolving their craft.

DL: What makes a good design a really good design, how do you evaluate good design?

SS : A really good design combines functionality, aesthetics, and innovation. It solves a problem, is visually appealing, intuitive to use, and emotionally engaging. I evaluate good design by considering its functionality, aesthetics, innovation, user experience, and emotional impact.

DL: What is the value of good design? Why should everyone invest in good design?

SS : Good design enhances functionality, aesthetics, and user experience. Investing in good design improves efficiency, visual appeal, brand image, longevity, emotional connection, and encourages innovation. This leads to greater satisfaction and success.

DL: What would you design and who would you design for if you had the time?

SS : If I had the time, I would love to design jewelry for the Met Gala event. It would be an incredible opportunity to showcase unique and extravagant pieces on such a prestigious platform. My dream clients would include Ciara, Johnny Depp, Tom Hardy, Kate Middleton, and many others. Designing for these distinguished personalities would be an honor and an exciting challenge, allowing me to create truly exceptional and memorable jewelry.

DL: What is the dream project you haven’t yet had time to realize?

SS : A dream project I haven’t yet had time to realize is a collaboration with Anna Wintour, the Editor-in-Chief of Vogue. Working with her to create a special jewelry collection would be a tremendous honor and an exciting challenge.

DL: What is your secret recipe of success in design, what is your secret ingredient?

SS : My favorite design is the Inaequo ring. It’s made of 14k yellow gold and features a 150ct smoky topaz with 42 smoky diamonds. The flawless craftsmanship and luxurious materials make it a standout piece in my collection.

DL: What kind of design software and equipment do you use in your work?

SS : I don’t use any design software or high-tech equipment for my work. Instead, I rely on simple tools like paper and pencil for sketching my designs. I spent a lot of time and effort crafting a beautiful and elegant piece, only to discover that the wife was allergic to gold! It was an unexpected twist, but it became a humorous reminder of the importance of thoroughly understanding a client’s needs and preferences. SS : When I was a little child, it wasn’t immediately apparent that I would become a great designer. I was a very joyful and energetic kid, with a love for artistic activities and creativity, but there weren’t any clear indications at that time that I would end up pursuing a career in design. My early years were filled with playful artistic explorations, and it was only as I grew older that I started to realize my deep passion for design. My journey to becoming a designer was a gradual process, where my childhood interests evolved into a dedicated pursuit of creating beautiful and meaningful work.

DL: What do you think about future; what do you see will happen in thousand years from now?

SS : When I think about the future, especially a thousand years from now, it’s a fascinating and somewhat abstract concept. While it’s challenging to predict exactly what will happen, I believe that the pieces of jewelry created by Sanda Design, made from precious and timeless materials, will still hold their value and beauty. I like to imagine that these pieces will be cherished heirlooms passed down through generations, keeping a part of my creative spirit alive.

DL: Please tell us anything you wish your fans to know about you, your design and anything else?

SS : I want my fans to know that each piece from Sanda Design is created with passion and care.
