Design Legends ("DL") had the distinct honour to interview legendary designer Meng Chu Huang ("MCH") for their original perspective and innovative approach to design as well as their creative lifestyle, we are very pleased to share our interview with our distinguished readers.
MCH : I'm a recent graduate from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, with a major in Visual Communication.
MCH : What motivates me to design and why I became a designer stems from my journey through art and creativity. It all began in elementary school, where art class became a realm of boundless imagination and discovery. As I progressed into middle school, the pressure of rigorous art tests in Taiwan momentarily dimmed my passion. However, a transformative experience in a special art class reignited my creative spirit, leading me to discover my love for design—a realm where ideas could take tangible form. Choosing to explore a broader education in high school, including subjects like Chinese and math, expanded my perspective. Despite initially aiming for a business career after Taiwan's General Scholastic Ability Test, I realized my true calling lay in art and design. This realization prompted me to pursue studies at art schools in the US, where I found not only a passion for creating art but also a fascination with solving problems through innovative design solutions. Reflecting on my journey, I see it as a continuous path of discovery and growth. Each challenge and revelation has reinforced my belief that design is not just a career but a calling. It's where my creativity thrives, where I can merge imagination with functionality to create meaningful and impactful designs.
MCH : I choose to become a designer because this is where my passion is.
MCH : I specialize in designing visual identities, book layouts, and typography. In my career, I aspire to focus more on creating visual identities because I find it the most captivating and challenging aspect of design.
MCH : I would say young designers should prioritize regular practice, absorb a wide range of knowledge, and immerse themselves in diverse artworks. These environments not only inspire creativity but also fuel the development of innovative projects.
MCH : What distinguishes between a good designer and a great designer is more than just technical skill or creativity. It's about the ability to continually evolve and adapt, learning from both successes and setbacks. A great designer understands the importance of storytelling through their work, connecting deeply with their audience. They possess a keen eye for detail and a strong sense of empathy, allowing them to anticipate and meet the needs of their clients and users effectively. Moreover, they embrace challenges as opportunities for growth, pushing boundaries to create impactful and memorable designs that stand the test of time.
MCH : Imagine a design that captures your attention from across the room—a logo, perhaps, or a beautifully laid-out book cover. As you approach, it's not just visually striking; it tells a story. This is the essence of what makes a good design truly exceptional. For me, evaluating a design goes beyond its surface appeal. It's about how well it communicates its message or function, much like how a well-told story captivates its audience. Just as my journey in art and design has evolved through exploration and learning, so too does a good design evolve through meticulous practice and absorbing diverse knowledge. When I assess a design, I look for its ability to balance form and function. Does it solve a problem creatively, like a protagonist overcoming challenges? Is it aesthetically pleasing, drawing the viewer into its narrative? Like discovering my passion for design in unexpected places, a good design surprises and delights while remaining grounded in its purpose. A great design, then, is not just visually appealing or technically proficient. It's a narrative woven with innovation, empathy, and attention to detail—a narrative that resonates long after it's first encountered. This, to me, is the hallmark of a truly outstanding design.
MCH : Imagine entering a bustling marketplace where one stall stands out—not just for its products, but for its inviting layout and clear signage that instantly communicates what it offers. This is the essence of good design. In my journey through art and design, I've learned that good design is a powerful storyteller. Like a compelling narrative, it captivates attention, evokes emotions, and leaves a lasting impression. Investing in good design enhances communication, ensuring messages are understood and remembered. It transforms challenges into opportunities for innovation and problem-solving, much like how my art class experiences evolved from technical exercises to creative breakthroughs. Ultimately, the value of good design lies in its ability to connect, inspire, and elevate. It shapes perceptions, creates meaningful experiences, and drives success—an invaluable asset for anyone looking to make a lasting impact.
MCH : I design for my friends and family based on topics that resonate with them or are important to them. Their thoughts and concerns significantly influence my own perspectives and creative approach, making their input invaluable to my design process.
MCH : Haven't think about it yet.
MCH : Be optimistic and adaptive to different opinion and advices.
MCH : Matt Willey is a design master whom I greatly admire and draw inspiration from.
MCH : The National Gallery is currently one of my favorite designs. I believe it effectively communicates the importance of the National Gallery London and enhances its recognition among other national galleries worldwide.
MCH : To improve as designers, people can immerse themselves in continuous learning and exploration, much like I did. I focused on reading extensively, practicing design rigorously, and exploring various facets of design to broaden my skills and perspectives.
MCH : I think I'll become a business person or a consultant if I hadn't become a designer.
MCH : In my perspective, design is about story telling, but not only storytelling, we are using our maximim creativity and skillset to probelm soving and within this container we tell the best story to our audience. It has the restriction on how much our personal expression can input to see the problem solving mindset collaborate with the artist self expression is really exciting and satisfying
MCH : I consider my mom my biggest supporter. Whenever I feel pessimistic or down, she always encourages me and reassures me that I'm on the right path. Her unwavering support and encouragement give me the motivation and energy to strive to become a great designer.
MCH : I often encounter bad design in our daily lives, and it inspires me to create better designs that enhance aesthetics in our society and improve communication to make our lives more efficient and easier.
MCH : Initially, my biggest hurdle was uncertainty about my ability to create designs that resonated with others and brought enjoyment. I often questioned whether my ideas would connect effectively. Over time, I came to see these uncertainties not as barriers, but as catalysts for growth. Each challenge became a fuel that drove me to refine my skills and understanding of design. With each project, I sought to surpass my own expectations, learning from every success and setback along the way. This journey of self-improvement continues to shape my approach to design, pushing me to innovate and create designs that not only communicate effectively but also resonate deeply with their audience.
MCH : I believe there are no strict rules on how designers should present themselves. Any method or medium they choose to showcase their work is effective and valid.
MCH : My upcoming design project will delve into my cultural heritage, aiming to increase global awareness of Taiwanese traditional deity culture.
MCH : My ultimate goal as a designer is rooted in a deep desire to bring Taiwan's rich design heritage to the global stage. Growing up immersed in Taiwan's vibrant cultural tapestry, I've always been captivated by the intricate stories and symbolism woven into our traditional arts and crafts, including our revered deity culture. As I embarked on my journey in design, I realized the potential to not only showcase Taiwan's unique cultural identity but also to redefine how design is perceived and valued in society. Too often, designers are viewed merely as service providers rather than innovators shaping our visual and functional landscapes. Driven by this passion, my aim is to create designs that resonate internationally, bridging cultural divides and fostering a deeper understanding and appreciation for Taiwan's artistic legacy. By elevating Taiwan's design environment, I envision a future where designers are recognized as pivotal agents of change, contributing to a more visually compelling, functional, and culturally enriched global society.
MCH : As I am still in the early stages of my career, I am committed to working diligently to grow into an accomplished designer.
MCH : I'm working on a next generation AI project where I'm really excited about!
MCH : I found the most satisfaction in the "Art as a Form of Happiness" project because it's a tangible product that can bring joy to those feeling down or lacking optimism in their daily lives. This project has been incredibly fulfilling for me.
MCH : In the coming years, I would like to see a greater appreciation for the importance of design across industries. Specifically, I hope for higher standards and prerequisites for designers, ensuring that creativity and technical proficiency are consistently elevated. This shift could lead to more innovative and impactful designs that positively influence society.
MCH : The timeline for each project varies greatly. Creating a logo or visual identity may require several weeks or even months, whereas designing a poster could be completed in a shorter timeframe.
MCH : I typically begin by thoroughly understanding the project objectives, their specific needs, and the message they aim to convey.
MCH : Never design a something that does not look good
MCH : I believe they both influence each other. Sometimes, design sets the trend, while at other times, trends impact the aesthetic of that period, leading to changes in design.
MCH : Technology plays a crucial role in my design process, primarily enhancing efficiency and expanding creative possibilities. While it streamlines research and design tasks, it complements rather than replaces the core creative process and final design outcomes.
MCH : Adobe creative suite and Macbook
MCH : Color, materials, and ambiance play pivotal roles in design by shaping the overall aesthetic, mood, and functionality of a space or product. They establish visual harmony, convey intended messages, and evoke specific emotions, thereby influencing how users perceive and interact with the design. These elements are essential in creating cohesive and impactful designs that resonate with their intended audience.
MCH : I hope to inspire people to become curious and ask, "What motivated you to create this project and design?"
MCH : What inspires them to create such great designs or products is truly inspiring. What are some key aspects I can learn from this project?
MCH : I haven't yet found an ideal design partner, but I hope to meet one during my career. I strongly believe in co-design because incorporating others' feedback and perspectives often leads to creating better designs. Therefore, I see most projects as collaborative efforts involving multiple designers or individuals.
MCH : The people who have had the most influence on my design are my close friends and family. They inspire me and provide the motivation that fuels my creative process, playing a significant role in shaping all of my designs.
MCH : The way of seeing has had a profound impact on my design journey. This particular book not only transformed how I view art but also enriched my perspective on the world. Its insights have encouraged me to delve deeper into my own inner thoughts and emotions, inspiring a more introspective approach to design. While I've explored various influential design books, this one stands out as a catalyst for personal growth and creative exploration, continually shaping my artistic vision and design philosophy.
MCH : I develop my skills by practicing consistently and immersing myself in a wide range of artworks.
MCH : I would love to have a conversation with Andy Warhol to understand his thoughts on how he has influenced the design industry thus far.
MCH : I will continue to strive for excellence in my work. Maintaining consistent high quality is challenging, but I am committed to achieving it through continuous effort and dedication.
MCH : My favorite color is red, and I love London as a place. When it comes to food, I enjoy various cuisines. Autumn is my favorite season for its colorful foliage and cool weather. I am passionate about coffee making and photography.
MCH : Taking some time to visit an exhibition and enjoy a cup of coffee is the perfect day for me as a designer. This is how I motivate myself, along with spending time in nature to experience the vastness of the world.
MCH : When I was a child, becoming a great designer wasn't something that seemed obvious to me. I initially dreamed of becoming an architect, but as I grew older, my passion for design blossomed, leading me down a path that aligned more closely with my creative interests and aspirations.
MCH : In my view, the essence of a well-designed world lies in its ability to uplift us, weaving together efficiency and beauty seamlessly. When everything around us is thoughtfully crafted, it not only enhances our daily experiences but also inspires a deeper appreciation for the aesthetic qualities that surround us.
MCH : I'm a big foodie—I love exploring all kinds of cuisine! If you have any favorites or recommendations, please feel free to share them with me. Good food always boosts my energy and creativity, so I'm motivated to keep creating great designs in the future.
