LEGENDARY INTERVIEW

Design Legends ("DL") had the distinct honour to interview legendary designer Alexander Flikshteyn ("AF") for their original perspective and innovative approach to design as well as their creative lifestyle, we are very pleased to share our interview with our distinguished readers.

DL: Could you please tell us a bit about your design background and education?

AF : Drawing has always been a natural form of expression for me since childhood. The artistic influence of my older sibling further fueled my passion. As I grew older, design felt like a seamless transition for me. That's why I decided to apply to Pratt Institute for Industrial Design. I believed it would provide me with a comprehensive education, encompassing all the elements I was interested in.

DL: What motivates you to design in general, why did you become a designer?

AF : I am motivated by the opportunity to create something new, something that didn't exist before. I find fulfillment in putting my unique perspective and touch on things, as if I'm making a contribution to the world and helping to shape it. It's this passion for creation and the desire to make a difference that led me to become a designer.

DL: Did you choose to become a designer, or you were forced to become one?

AF : I chose the field absolutely :)

DL: What do you design, what type of designs do you wish to design more of?

AF : I enjoy designing one of a kind furniture as well as the interior space filled with architectural millwork.

DL: What should young designers do to become a design legend like you?

AF : Enjoy the process of creating, if you love what you do the you don't need to do anything else.

DL: What distinguishes between a good designer and a great designer?

AF : The distinction between a good designer and a great designer, in my opinion, lies in the ability to create work that stands the test of time. Just like the enduring quality of Shakespeare's plays or Beethoven's compositions, a great designer's work transcends the present and remains relevant and impactful for generations to come.

DL: What makes a good design a really good design, how do you evaluate good design?

AF : What makes a design truly good, in my view, is the story it conveys and the efficiency of its concept. It strikes the right balance, avoiding excess or insufficiency. A good design not only enhances functionality but also inspires aesthetically, improving the way we do things.

DL: What is the value of good design? Why should everyone invest in good design?

AF : Good design is the driving force behind growth and evolution. Design allows us to improve through interaction, problem-solving, and expressing our surroundings. Investing in good design benefits everyone by facilitating progress, enhancing communication, and solving challenges in innovative ways. It is an essential component of our collective development and should be embraced by all.

DL: What would you design and who would you design for if you had the time?

AF : If given the opportunity, I would design smart, functional, and elegantly simple furniture for Ikea.

DL: What is the dream project you haven’t yet had time to realize?
