LEGENDARY INTERVIEW

Design Legends ("DL") had the distinct honour to interview legendary designer Rosadela Serulle ("RS") for their original perspective and innovative approach to design as well as their creative lifestyle, we are very pleased to share our interview with our distinguished readers.

DL: What motivates you to design in general, why did you become a designer?

RS : What motivates me as a designer is to create spaces that compliments an overall design homes that fit the pattern of a family. Commercial spaces that are unique but at the same time have a purpose or hotels that offer an insite into myself as a designer.

DL: Did you choose to become a designer, or you were forced to become one?

RS : I completely chose for myself my career path I am design.

DL: What should young designers do to become a design legend like you?

RS : I believe young designers should never stop dreaming of what they can accomplish and understand that it comes with plenty of sacrifices.

DL: What distinguishes between a good designer and a great designer?

RS : The difference between a good designer and a great one is simple. A great designer goes above and beyond to comply with all of the requisites of the client but gives personality to the space creating uniqueness.

DL: What makes a good design a really good design, how do you evaluate good design?

RS : good to sign is to meet the criteria of a project and you can make a good design. Great bypassing the expectations of your own clients.

DL: What is the value of good design? Why should everyone invest in good design?

RS : The value of good design is in its purpose, as long as the design meets the requirements and fulfills the need in question then the value is unmeasurable. Saying this makes it necessary for the client to invest in any way possible in good design.

DL: What would you design and who would you design for if you had the time?

RS : I would love to design a ski chalet; I still have yet to design a home located in the mountains where winter and seasons make up the exterior art.

DL: What is the dream project you haven’t yet had time to realize?

RS : Each project that I am involved in becomes a small dream project for myself when the client is completely satisfied, then I have fulfilled each small dream.

DL: What is your secret recipe of success in design, what is your secret ingredient?

RS : My secret recipe wouldn’t be a secret if I revealed it, but in this case, I have a way of mixing styles ethnicity and colors that melt together as one.

DL: What are your favorite designs by other designers, why do you like them?

RS : Love Kelly Wearstler. She is BOLD! I love the boldness of all she designs. It’s truly authentic to her.

DL: What is your greatest design, which aspects of that design makes you think it is great?

RS : To date I would say my greatest design is in fact a boutique hotel in the heart of the colonial city of Santo Domingo Dominican Republic. What makes it great is how it stands out from all its surrounding and how it stands with its own character and fusion which indulged guests in luxury.

DL: How could people improve themselves to be better designers, what did you do?

RS : Designer should improve themselves by not accepting their first drafts. If you keep pushing greatness will follow.

DL: If you hadn’t become a designer, what would you have done?

RS : Artist of some sort

DL: How do you define design, what is design for you?

RS : My definition of design is the ability to create from very little or nothing something beautiful and functional.

DL: Who helped you to reach these heights, who was your biggest supporter?

RS : My family specially my husband. Always my number one fan and always supporting my dreams.

DL: What helped you to become a great designer?

RS : The main thing that helped me become a great designer is my persistence.

DL: What were the obstacles you faced before becoming a design master?

RS : In my country, there is very little support in the design community for outsiders' people who think and design like me or sometimes the result of OutKast within our element. but this exclusion only made me want more.

DL: How do you think designers should present their work?

RS : Designers should always present their work in details, remembering that we understand our proposal, but the client might not.

DL: What’s your next design project, what should we expect from you in future?

RS : I am working on a large residential apartment where my creativity is appreciated and supported one which I know the outcome will be amazing.

DL: What’s your ultimate goal as a designer?

RS : You can never have one goal. I have many goals., but for now is to keep designing

DL: What people expect from an esteemed designer such as yourself?

RS : They expect originality they expect to see themselves in the final draft of their home or project not only the designer's point of view.

DL: How does design help create a better society?

RS : Design is super important to society, as it creates forms of interactions that unite people.

DL: What are you currently working on that you are especially excited about?

RS : I am working on a large residential apartment where my creativity is appreciated and supported one which I know the outcome will be amazing.

DL: Which design projects gave you the most satisfaction, why?

RS : All of my works when completed give me the greatest satisfaction as I know I have fulfilled my clients' requirements and more.

DL: What would you like to see changed in design industry in the coming years?

RS : I would not like to see a lot of AI introduced into our industry. As I fear today’s designers are missing out in the importance of beginning in square one like sketching.

DL: Where do you think the design field is headed next?

RS : We’ll just have to see

DL: How long does it take you to finalize a design project?

RS : From start to finish if the client requires very little to no changes, we can finish up a full project between six months to a year.

DL: When you have a new design project, where do you start?

RS : Personally, I do not believe in trends.

DL: What is your life motto as a designer?

RS : My design Moto is design is an opportunity to demonstrate in a physical nature of feeling a state of mind and once personality.

DL: Do you think design sets the trends or trends set the designs?

RS : I completely think that design sets the trends personally I am not a trend follower I believe in design that last a lifetime.

DL: What is the role of technology when you design?

RS : Technology plays a major rule in all that is designed as you can apply it in techniques, finishings lighting, and more.

DL: What kind of design software and equipment do you use in your work?

RS : I love autocad ! Love sketup !

DL: What is the role of the color, materials and ambient in design?

RS : Color makes up a major part of the design process and it’s truly important to the final objective of your client and what as a designer you are trying to accomplish. The combination of colors materials and ambience is what makes up a great design.

DL: What do you wish people to ask about your design?

RS : I wish people would ask me when they see my design, or they experience it is how could I have displayed my clients through Deas Aire in combination to me as a designer.

DL: When you see a new great design or product what comes into your mind?

RS : When I see a great design, I study it carefully.

DL: Who is your ideal design partner? Do you believe in co-design?

RS : Of course, I believe in co designing, although you must choose wisely your partner, and if there is a need for one. Personally, I have cod designed in a few projects with my sister as the lead architect and myself as a lead interior designer. It’s a great experience and one I would love to repeat.

DL: Which people you interacted had the most influence on your design?

RS : My design is my own I do not believe in influences or taking inspiration from others works.

DL: Which books you read had the most effect on your design?

RS : Architectural digest not a book, but I’m magazine.

DL: How did you develop your skills as a master designer?

RS : Practice makes perfect. You can also find a lot of greatness and failure. You just have to get back up.

DL: Irrelative of time and space, who you would want to meet, talk and discuss with?

RS : My favorite architect, Frank Lloyd Wright

DL: How do you feel about all the awards and recognition you had, is it hard to be famous?

RS : I do not consider myself as famous not just yet. I have a lot more to accomplish, but I love the feeling of receiving recognition for doing something. I absolutely love.

DL: What is your favorite color, place, food, season, thing and brand?

RS : My favorite color is blue. I love Italy and Germany and France. I guess Europe., my favorite season is the winter and I would have to say o love bread !

DL: Please tell us a little memoir, a funny thing you had experienced as a designer?

RS : One of my favorite things during the design process is when I am receiving the shipments of all the furniture that compose my project. It makes me feel like I am flying, and I do not want to land.

DL: What makes your day great as a designer, how do you motivate yourself?

RS : What can make or break a day as a designer for me is to see things come to light to see them come to farm as I designed them.

DL: When you were a little child, was it obvious that you would become a great designer?

RS : Of course, either that or a veterinarian. My Barbie house was always up to date.

DL: What do you think about future; what do you see will happen in thousand years from now?

RS : 1000 years from now, I think we will start to see a lot more differences in how we design in general because of global warming. We are being affected in a more brutal way, and we must adapt to these changes.

DL: Please tell us anything you wish your fans to know about you, your design and anything else?

RS : I am just getting started. I wish to accomplish so much more. I would love to collaborate with other designers worldwide, whether it would be in the United States or Europe, even in Asia. I am excited to see what the future holds for myself. The sky is the limit.

CURRENTLY SHE IS DESCRIBED AS A DESIGNER WHO MELTS STYLES TOGETHER, CONFORMING A MAGICAL SPACE FULL OF ARTISTIC ELEMENTS THE CLIENT CAN ALWAYS ENJOY. THE IMPORTANCE OF CHOOSING LESS ABRASIVE MATERIALS TOWARDS THE ENVIRONMENT IS A WAY SHE CAN CONTRIBUTE TO SOCIETY. EVEN THOUGH SHE HAS A TRADEMARK TO EACH CREATION, ALL OF THE DESIGNS ARE DIFFERENT. SHE DESCRIBES THAT HER MOST IMPORTANT OBJECTIVE IS TO DESIGN A HOME WHERE ALL SPACES ARE ENJOYABLE AND USED, EXCLUDING HER FROM THOSE DESIGNERS THAT CHOOSE TO CREATE A MUSEUM LIKE RESIDENCE.
