LEGENDARY INTERVIEW

Design Legends ("DL") had the distinct honour to interview legendary designer Cheng Han Wu ("CHW") for their original perspective and innovative approach to design as well as their creative lifestyle, we are very pleased to share our interview with our distinguished readers.

DL: What motivates you to design in general, why did you become a designer?

CHW : 1. Creativity and desire for expression: I hope to create new things, convey information and show my unique perspective through design. 2. The joy of problem solving: enjoy the process of thinking about how to best meet the needs of users, improve functionality and aesthetic value. 3. Influence and improve life: Believe that good design can provide better user experience, create a better environment, and even change society and culture. 4. The pursuit of beauty and details: I like to explore various visual elements, colors, shapes and materials, etc., and combine them to create design works with visual appeal and quality. 5. Continuous learning and growth: enjoy the process of growing together with new technologies, new trends and new challenges.

DL: Did you choose to become a designer, or you were forced to become one?

CHW : My love for creative expression and visual beauty made me a natural choice to become a designer. I believe that design is an ever-evolving and developing field, so continuous self-improvement and hard work is the key to being a good designer.

DL: What do you design, what type of designs do you wish to design more of?

CHW : As a designer, I focus on creating spatial designs that are closely related to user experience. I pursue design that interacts intelligently with the environment and space, as I believe this will be an important factor in enhancing the quality of life. I am committed to designing spaces that interact with people and respond to their needs to provide a smarter and more comfortable experience.

DL: What should young designers do to become a design legend like you?

CHW : Young designers should study and explore unremittingly, constantly surpass themselves, and shape their own design path with unique creativity and influence.

DL: What distinguishes between a good designer and a great designer?

CHW : The difference between a good designer and a great one is impact, innovation, lasting influence, social contribution and the eternal value of the work. Great designers are unique in the field of design and have profound influence and significance on society and human beings.

DL: What is the value of good design? Why should everyone invest in good design?

CHW : Good design is not just about aesthetics, it is also about functionality, user experience, innovation and sustainability. Everyone should invest in good design because it enhances quality of life, creates value, meets user needs, promotes sustainability, and creates emotion and connection. Whether it is an individual or an organization, investing in good design will bring us long-term benefits and rich returns.

DL: How do you define design, what is design for you?

CHW : Design is a multidimensional process that incorporates art, science, technology, and personal thinking. Provide value and improve people's lives and the environment.

DL: What’s your ultimate goal as a designer?

CHW : The ultimate goal of designers is to improve people's lives and society through innovation, value and impact. They seek to solve problems, create value, impact society, demonstrate innovation and creativity, and provide an excellent user experience.

DL: How does design help create a better society?

CHW : Design has the ability to shape society by improving people's quality of life, promoting sustainable development, increasing the enjoyment of beauty, and promoting social inclusion. It is the designer's responsibility to incorporate these values into their work in a creative and innovative way.

DL: What would you like to see changed in design industry in the coming years?

CHW : 1. Digital transformation: With the development of technology, the design industry will undergo further digital transformation. This includes using new technologies such as virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR) to enable a more interactive and immersive design experience, as well as using tools such as data analysis and artificial intelligence to optimize the design process and personalize services. 2. Sustainable design: Sustainable development has become an important topic of global concern, and the design industry will also pay more attention to environmental friendliness and social responsibility. Designers will work to create green and sustainable design solutions, including using renewable materials, reducing waste, promoting a circular economy, and more. 3. User-centered design: User experience design will continue to be an important focus of the design industry. Designers will pay more attention to people's needs, expectations and behaviors to create products and services that are closer to users. This may include more in-depth user research, prototype testing and integration of user feedback.

DL: Where do you think the design field is headed next?

CHW : 1. Cultural diversity and inclusive design: The impact of globalization and multiculturalism will prompt the design field to pay more attention to cultural diversity and inclusiveness. Designers will be committed to creating design works that can respect and integrate different cultural values and aesthetics, and promote cross-cultural communication and understanding. 2. Design for social impact: Designers will actively pursue design solutions that have a positive impact on society. They will focus on social issues and needs, and use design to drive social change, improve people's lives and promote social justice.

DL: Do you think design sets the trends or trends set the designs?

CHW : There is an interactive relationship between design and fashion, and the two influence each other. Designers can lead the trend through innovative and unique designs, and at the same time be influenced and inspired by the trend to meet the needs of the market and users.

DL: What is the role of the color, materials and ambient in design?

CHW : Color, material and environment play an important role in the design. They can affect the emotion, feel, functionality and sustainability of a design, thereby enhancing its quality, appeal and user experience. Designers should consider them comprehensively and flexibly use them in the design to create satisfactory and valuable works.

DL: How do you feel about all the awards and recognition you had, is it hard to be famous?

CHW : It is important to pursue your passions and interests, and to keep learning and growing, whether you are famous or winning awards. Everyone has their own unique path and way of defining success, the key is to stick to your values and enjoy the fun and satisfaction that comes with what you do.

DL: What makes your day great as a designer, how do you motivate yourself?

CHW : 1. Set goals: Set clear goals and challenges, pursue personal growth and professional development, which can motivate yourself to work towards your goals. 2. Look for inspiration: stay curious and look for sources of inspiration, such as visiting exhibitions, reading design books and magazines, browsing design websites, etc., which can stimulate creativity and maintain passion. 3. Self-encouragement and rewards: When completing tasks or making progress, give yourself small rewards or positive feedback to increase your sense of self-worth and satisfaction. 4. Continuous learning: Continuously learn and develop one's own skills and knowledge, attend training courses, seminars or workshops, communicate and share experiences with other designers.

DL: What do you think about future; what do you see will happen in thousand years from now?

CHW : Based on current trends and development directions, we can predict some possibilities. For example, as technology continues to advance, we may see the application of more advanced artificial intelligence, machine learning and automation technologies, and there may be more intelligent machines and systems interacting and cooperating with humans. Renewable energy and environmental protection may become more important issues to meet the challenges of climate change and sustainable development.
