Design Legends ("DL") had the distinct honour to interview legendary designer Pavel Tahil ("PT") for their original perspective and innovative approach to design as well as their creative lifestyle, we are very pleased to share our interview with our distinguished readers.
PT : My art and design background is a culmination of diverse experiences and self-driven exploration. While pursuing my first degree in engineering, I discovered a deep passion for creativity and aesthetics, which ultimately led me to pursue graphic design at Seneca College in Canada. However, my journey into design extends beyond formal education.
PT : My motivation is to create meaningful experiences that positively impact people's lives and solve their problems. I delved into various creative fields, experimenting with photography, illustration, and web design, among others. These experiences allowed me to develop a versatile skill set and a keen eye for detail. It was through this exploration and the realization of the impact design could have on user experiences that I knew I wanted to become a designer, specifically a product designer.
PT : I can say that I chose to become a designer. Design has always been a passion of mine, and I actively pursued it as a career path based on my interest in creating innovative and user-centered solutions. Design allows me to combine my creativity, problem-solving skills, and passion for making a positive impact on the world.
PT : I specialize in designing digital products and experiences. I enjoy creating intuitive user interfaces, seamless interactions, and engaging visual designs for websites, mobile apps, and other digital platforms. While I find great satisfaction in designing digital products, I also have a keen interest in expanding my design scope to include physical product design, such as consumer electronics or smart devices.
PT : My advice to young designers aspiring to make their mark in the industry is to never stop learning and exploring. Continuously seek inspiration from various sources, stay up to date with the latest design trends and technologies, and actively engage with the design community. Embrace challenges, push your boundaries, and be open to feedback and critique. Cultivate a passion for problem-solving, empathize with users, and strive to create designs that have a positive impact.
PT : While a good designer possesses strong technical skills and can create visually pleasing designs, a great designer goes beyond aesthetics. Great designers possess a deep understanding of human behavior, employ a human-centered design approach, and continuously iterate and improve their designs based on user feedback.
PT : I evaluate a good design based on several criteria. Firstly, it should effectively solve the problem it aims to address, meeting user needs and enhancing their experience. Secondly, good design is intuitive and easy to use, providing a seamless interaction flow. It also considers aesthetics, incorporating visual appeal and cohesive aesthetics. Additionally, a good design considers the context and constraints of the project, such as technological feasibility and business goals. Ultimately, a really good design not only meets these criteria but also leaves a lasting positive impact on users, delighting and exceeding their expectations.
PT : Good design holds immense value as it enhances user satisfaction, improves usability, and fosters positive experiences. Investing in good design leads to products that are not only visually appealing but also functional, intuitive, and efficient. It creates a competitive advantage, differentiating brands and products in the market, while also building customer loyalty and driving business success. Ultimately, everyone should invest in good design because it has the power to positively impact lives, create meaningful connections, and drive innovation and progress in society.
PT : If I had the time, I would design a data visualization tool specifically tailored for stock market analysis, leveraging the capabilities of platforms like Tableau. This tool would cater to traders, analysts, and financial professionals, offering interactive visualizations that help them gain deeper insights into market trends, track stock performance, and identify investment opportunities.
PT : One of my dream projects that I haven't yet had the time to realize would be designing for Apple. Being part of the Apple design team and contributing to the creation of their iconic products would be an incredible opportunity. Designing an innovative and game-changing product that seamlessly integrates cutting-edge technology, elegant aesthetics, and exceptional user experience would be a dream come true.
PT : My secret recipe for success is a combination of passion and empathy. Passion fuels my drive to continuously improve and innovate, while empathy allows me to deeply understand the needs and desires of users, resulting in designs that truly resonate with them.
PT : I draw inspiration from various design masters and legends who have made a significant impact on the field. Tobias Van Schneider and Steve Jobs are undoubtedly influential figures whose work and philosophy resonate with me. Apart from them, I find inspiration in the designs of Dieter Rams, known for his timeless and minimalist approach, and Jonathan Ive, who played a pivotal role in shaping Apple's iconic product design language. I also admire the innovative work of Charles and Ray Eames, renowned for their contributions to architecture and furniture design, and the visionary concepts of Zaha Hadid, a pioneering architect.
PT : I admire the work of the Stripe Design Team for their exceptional designs that seamlessly blend aesthetics and functionality. Their focus on creating intuitive and user-centered experiences is truly inspiring. One of my favorite designs by other designers is the Airbnb app. I appreciate how it provides a seamless booking experience with its clean interface, intuitive navigation, and visually appealing imagery that inspires users to explore new destinations. Another favorite design is the Tesla Model S, which combines sleek aesthetics with innovative technology, showcasing the power of design in transforming the automotive industry.
PT : One of my greatest designs is a mobile banking app that I created. I consider it great due to its seamless user experience, intuitive interface, and focus on security. The design prioritizes ease of use with simple navigation and clear information hierarchy, making banking transactions effortless for users. Additionally, robust security features such as biometric authentication and encryption instill trust and ensure user data protection.
PT : To become a better designer, one should strive for continuous learning and improvement. Actively seeking inspiration from various sources such as design blogs, books, and attending industry events can help expand one's knowledge and creative thinking. Engaging in personal projects, experimenting with new tools and techniques, and seeking feedback from peers can also foster growth and development as a designer. I personally embraced these practices, constantly challenging myself to learn new design methodologies, exploring emerging technologies, and staying updated with the latest design trends.
PT : If I hadn't pursued a career in design, I would likely have continued working as an engineer. I have a strong appreciation for the technical aspects of product development and enjoy solving complex problems, so I would have explored opportunities to contribute to engineering projects and innovations in various industries.
PT : Design, to me, is the art and science of creating intentional and purposeful solutions that seamlessly blend form and function. It involves crafting experiences, products, and systems that not only visually appeal but also solve problems and enhance the lives of users. Design is the meticulous process of empathizing with users, understanding their needs, and translating those insights into meaningful and intuitive experiences that delight and inspire.
PT : I have been fortunate to have the support of my mentors and colleagues throughout my journey. However, my biggest supporter has been my family, who have always believed in me and encouraged me to pursue my passion for design, providing unwavering support and guidance along the way.
