LEGENDARY INTERVIEW

Design Legends ("DL") had the distinct honour to interview legendary designer HUI QIONG YANG ("HQY") for their original perspective and innovative approach to design as well as their creative lifestyle, we are very pleased to share our interview with our distinguished readers.

DL: Could you please tell us a bit about your design background and education?

HQY : I have been engaged in the design industry for about ten years and graduated from the Academy of fine arts of Sichuan Normal University in China

DL: What motivates you to design in general, why did you become a designer?

HQY : Because the design industry is what I have been studying in college. I learned a lot of design masters in college, such as haraya, Tadao Ando, jobs, etc., so I really want to create some great works and change the world.

DL: Did you choose to become a designer, or you were forced to become one?

HQY : Well, there are many subjective choices. It's mainly because I have been in this industry and have been instructed by many people.

DL: What do you design, what type of designs do you wish to design more of?

HQY : We mainly do packaging design, cultural and creative product design, visual design. If there is an opportunity, I hope to have the opportunity to cross-border clothing devices, etc.

DL: What should young designers do to become a design legend like you?

HQY : I am a young designer. I feel that my design road is still very long, and there is still a big gap with many great designers. If you say experience, there are still some. I think it's really important to constantly challenge and break through yourself.

DL: What distinguishes between a good designer and a great designer?

HQY : Well, in fact, whether an excellent designer is excellent or not needs to be looked at from the perspective. Some designers have made great breakthroughs in academic technology, some designers have made great breakthroughs in ideas, some designers bring many people thinking enlightenment, and some designers promote product progress in business.... I think these are excellent designers. Maybe if the design brings some changes, it is an excellent design. An excellent designer should understand the purpose of the design. If the purpose is achieved, it is an excellent designer

DL: What makes a good design a really good design, how do you evaluate good design?

HQY : Good design is the designer's intention to design and guide a certain result, I think. Time will leave a really good design

DL: What is the value of good design? Why should everyone invest in good design?

HQY : Good design can solve many unnecessary problems and make users have no obstacles. If everyone demands good design, there will be less and less design garbage in the world and the society will make rapid progress.

DL: What would you design and who would you design for if you had the time?

HQY : If I have the chance, I think I will want to do some environmental protection design, because the environment is too bad now. Do what we can for all mankind.

DL: What is the dream project you haven’t yet had time to realize?

HQY : At present, the dream that has not been realized is probably that I have not studied in Europe. If I have the opportunity, I would like to see those great historical architectural designs in Europe.

DL: What is your secret recipe of success in design, what is your secret ingredient?

HQY : Well, maybe I've always wanted to express Chinese traditional culture in modern language, make it a system and apply it to business.

DL: Who are some other design masters and legends you get inspired from?

HQY : Well, Japanese designers have a great influence on me. Haraya, Tadao Ando,.. And so on, including jobs.

DL: What are your favorite designs by other designers, why do you like them?

HQY : Well, Japanese designers have a great influence on me. Haraya, Tadao Ando,.. And so on, including jobs.

DL: What is your greatest design, which aspects of that design makes you think it is great?

HQY : We have designed a Tibetan cultural and creative brand and products. Well, we went deep into the Tibetan areas to find durable products of local herdsmen, improved them, and made a series of products with local materials and local methods. That series of works were really great, as if they had grown from the local area. It was very interesting.

DL: If you hadn’t become a designer, what would you have done?

HQY : Well, look at the latest design, read more books, including poetry and philosophy, and summarize more.

DL: How do you define design, what is design for you?

HQY : Design is the way to solve problems. Most customers need to make new design with certain business demands, so we find out the demands and provide effective solutions.

DL: Who helped you to reach these heights, who was your biggest supporter?

HQY : It's my client! Well, many experiences are brought by customers. We learn and grow together with customers, and because of the continuous requirements of customers, we also grow.

DL: What helped you to become a great designer?

HQY : It's probably about your own requirements. Some predecessors often say that you must make new things and constantly challenge yourself. This has also become the creed of my life, constantly asking myself to make better works.

DL: What were the obstacles you faced before becoming a design master?

HQY : In fact, I always feel that I still have a big gap with the real design masters. There will be bottlenecks in each stage. I should have the courage to break through and be self aware.

DL: How do you think designers should present their work?

HQY : Show your ideas clearly on the platform.

DL: What’s your next design project, what should we expect from you in future?

HQY : It's probably the design project of moon cake and sachet. Many designers have done this. How to push through the old and bring forth the new is a very important thing.

DL: What’s your ultimate goal as a designer?

HQY : My ultimate goal is to finish all the business projects I am lucky to receive and express my art well in my lifetime.

DL: What people expect from an esteemed designer such as yourself?

HQY : There will probably be more expectations. I hope there will be a breakthrough every time. So to be excellent all the time, we really need to stick to it.

DL: How does design help create a better society?

HQY : The essence of design is to solve the optimization problem. If everything is perfect, the society will be more perfect.

DL: What are you currently working on that you are especially excited about?

HQY : At present, there are many researches on Chinese traditional intangible cultural heritage, which are very interesting. I hope they can be grafted and applied in modern commerce. It can not only effectively prevent the disappearance of traditional culture, but also solve many problems.

DL: Which design projects gave you the most satisfaction, why?

HQY : Several projects in Tibet that we have been lucky to do are very satisfactory, because our design has really changed the lives of local herdsmen.

DL: What would you like to see changed in design industry in the coming years?

HQY : I hope some new ideas will appear.

DL: Where do you think the design field is headed next?

HQY : I think the next design direction will start to cross the border, not as strong as the previous sense of industry boundaries.

DL: How long does it take you to finalize a design project?

HQY : Normally, it should be about a month, depending on the situation. Sometimes customers are tangled, and it may take longer.

DL: When you have a new design project, where do you start?

HQY : Should be able to communicate with customers first, then conduct field investigation, and then summarize and observe to explore the direction of feasible schemes.

DL: What is your life motto as a designer?

HQY : Revitalizing China

DL: Do you think design sets the trends or trends set the designs?

HQY : It must be the design that determines the trend. If you blindly follow the trend, you may pay a huge price.

DL: What is the role of technology when you design?

HQY : Perfect presentation design landing, if the idea only exists in the idea can not let everyone see, then the idea is invalid.

DL: What kind of design software and equipment do you use in your work?

HQY : ps ai c4d painting

DL: What is the role of the color, materials and ambient in design?

HQY : Color is closely related to brand tonality and consumers, and the materials are the same. For example, if it is a mother and baby product, the soft color materials may be more appropriate. If it is a sports product, it is more appropriate to consider the speed, safety and sense of strength. The color has a sense of speed. If it is too soft, it will make people sleep, which is a big problem. Environment is an important factor in the design landing, and the appearance of the design in the environment must be considered.

DL: What do you wish people to ask about your design?

HQY : Maybe we can give more suggestions from the sense of use experience and constantly optimize it.

DL: When you see a new great design or product what comes into your mind?

HQY : Maybe I'll think, why didn't I think of such a design and feel annoyed. Then take a serious look at what's good about their design.

DL: Who is your ideal design partner? Do you believe in co-design?

HQY : Maybe I'll think, why didn't I think of such a design and feel annoyed. Then take a serious look at what's good about their design.

DL: Which people you interacted had the most influence on your design?

HQY : Probably my former boss, Mr. shako and many excellent peers.

DL: Which books you read had the most effect on your design?

HQY : Probably my former boss, Mr. shako and many excellent peers.

DL: How did you develop your skills as a master designer?

HQY : Movies, music, poetry, architecture, history and culture, humanities and painting are all the objects I study. I often see the great works in the past. I wonder why they deal with them in this way and continue to spread.

DL: Irrelative of time and space, who you would want to meet, talk and discuss with?

HQY : Einstein, Beethoven, Ang Lee

DL: How do you feel about all the awards and recognition you had, is it hard to be famous?

HQY : Well, I think winning awards is just a result. Constantly asking yourself to make new things is a natural process.

DL: What is your favorite color, place, food, season, thing and brand?

HQY : Green, Paris, Japanese cuisine, summer, dogs, and Muji

DL: Please tell us a little memoir, a funny thing you had experienced as a designer?

HQY : I found that some flowers in my hometown didn't exist until I went on a business trip. I thought they didn't exist in my hometown.

DL: What makes your day great as a designer, how do you motivate yourself?

HQY : Probably when I was in college, the works of many great designers were very popular, such as Muji and apple. I think designers are cool and deep people, so I want to be such a person.

DL: When you were a little child, was it obvious that you would become a great designer?

HQY : My childhood dream was to become a scientist. Unfortunately, I didn't have enough IQ. It should be difficult to contribute to science.

DL: What do you think about future; what do you see will happen in thousand years from now?

HQY : People in the future should live a long life, advance science and technology, and greatly shorten the travel time.

DL: Please tell us anything you wish your fans to know about you, your design and anything else?

HQY : I am a very ordinary human, nothing special. I just insist on doing what I like all the time and have made a little achievement.
