LEGENDARY INTERVIEW

Design Legends ("DL") had the distinct honour to interview legendary designer kalbod studio ("KS") for their original perspective and innovative approach to design as well as their creative lifestyle, we are very pleased to share our interview with our distinguished readers.

DL: Could you please tell us a bit about your design background and education?

KS : I graduated in architecture from the University of Tehran in 2008 and have been working in the field of architecture and design for about 14 years. During these years, I have designed about 40 different projects and won several international competitions.

DL: What motivates you to design in general, why did you become a designer?

KS : Designing and creating have a sense of power for me, and being creative and thinking motivates me a lot

DL: Did you choose to become a designer, or you were forced to become one?

KS : My grandfather was the most important motivation for me to become a designer. He was one of the most famous experimental architects in Iran who created designed many buildings and I am always proud of him.

DL: What do you design, what type of designs do you wish to design more of?

KS : The design of villas and houses is always attractive that you design the living environment of a family and think about all their daily needs and try to give the best answer to it.

DL: What should young designers do to become a design legend like you?

KS : The most important is the ability to visualize space and the power of space analysis, followed by aesthetic issues

DL: What distinguishes between a good designer and a great designer?

KS : Designer thinking and perspective can change the quality of designers. Any design that looks at the project from a better perspective and better understands the challenges of the project will be more successful.

DL: What makes a good design a really good design, how do you evaluate good design?

KS : Proper analysis of the situation and conditions of the project can greatly change the quality of the project. In my opinion, it is a good plan that, while responding appropriately to the issues of challenges, is also excellent in terms of aesthetics and visual identity.

DL: What is the value of good design? Why should everyone invest in good design?

KS : The value of good design to the right taste and sense and energy that is transmitted to the viewer. A good plan in the right interaction with its environment by increasing the credibility and capital of all the factors influencing it

DL: What would you design and who would you design for if you had the time?

KS : I would like to design a house for Elon Musk

DL: What is the dream project you haven’t yet had time to realize?

KS : New York Concert Hall Design

DL: What is your secret recipe of success in design, what is your secret ingredient?

KS : I try to think of a parameter that others do not think of and look at it from an angle that others do not.

DL: Who are some other design masters and legends you get inspired from?

KS : Zaha Hadid - Norman Foster

DL: What are your favorite designs by other designers, why do you like them?

KS : I recently saw a work by Japanese architect Sou Fujimoto that was very appealing and made the right connection between form and function.

DL: What is your greatest design, which aspects of that design makes you think it is great?

KS : The best project we did was the Isfahan Knowledge Bridge project, which is well designed due to the connection with the site and the correct performance solution

DL: How could people improve themselves to be better designers, what did you do?

KS : Of course, my team and I are trying to get better every day, but the most important thing that we pay attention to is the correct analysis of the subject. This helps the designer to provide better quality.

DL: If you hadn’t become a designer, what would you have done?

KS : I think I was becoming a musician, a kind of arranger or producer of music

DL: How do you define design, what is design for you?

KS : Creating something in the universe - something that did not exist before. Design makes sense to me. You are unlimited flying all over the world

DL: Who helped you to reach these heights, who was your biggest supporter?

KS : Family is always the biggest supporter, thank you all

DL: What helped you to become a great designer?

KS : I have to say that it takes a long time for a designer to grow up, but I think working around the clock has the biggest impact on a designer's success.

DL: What were the obstacles you faced before becoming a design master?

KS : Naturally, the situation gradually improves and there is more opportunity for thinking and analysis. I think the more you move towards success, the more obstacles you see and the more experienced you become

DL: How do you think designers should present their work?

KS : Technology has found attractive tools for architectural presentation, such as 3D printing or motion graphics

DL: What’s your next design project, what should we expect from you in future?

KS : We are designing a concept island in Dubai, an island for 2040. We are trying to design better and more quality projects every day

DL: What’s your ultimate goal as a designer?

KS : Be one of the top 10 designers in the world

DL: What people expect from an esteemed designer such as yourself?

KS : They expect us to create a flow, that is, to produce taste for the people

DL: How does design help create a better society?

KS : Every design has a new path to the future world. By targeting design and the spread of thinking in society, I think the biggest and most important effect that can be created.

DL: What are you currently working on that you are especially excited about?

KS : The design of the island in Dubai is very attractive to me. I hope good things happen

DL: Which design projects gave you the most satisfaction, why?

KS : The design of the Knowledge Bridge, which won the competition, was very attractive to us because of the connection it has made between the traditional architecture of Iran and Isfahan and modern architecture.

DL: What would you like to see changed in design industry in the coming years?

KS : I think the higher the execution possibilities, the happier the designers will be. Execution constraints often change the design path.

DL: Where do you think the design field is headed next?

KS : Design will be the most important part of the future world in all areas

DL: How long does it take you to finalize a design project?

KS : It usually takes from one month to six months from start and study to final delivery depending on the project

DL: When you have a new design project, where do you start?

KS : We usually start with project studies and analysis so we do not get into the design without a proper analysis of the project conditions

DL: What is your life motto as a designer?

KS : Nothing but quality matters

DL: Do you think design sets the trends or trends set the designs?

KS : i think design sets the trends .

DL: What is the role of technology when you design?

KS : In today's world, design is impossible without technology and technological advancement

DL: What kind of design software and equipment do you use in your work?

KS : Revit- 3dmax- Raino - Illustrator

DL: What is the role of the color, materials and ambient in design?

KS : Environment that plays a very effective role in designs. We try to have a correct analysis of the environment. Color and material are the next important issues that are very effective in the final quality of the designer

DL: What do you wish people to ask about your design?

KS : Most of the questions are about the design process and how to achieve this form and design and how we came up with this concept.

DL: When you see a new great design or product what comes into your mind?

KS : How great the designer thought and analyzed. I always admire his good design

DL: Who is your ideal design partner? Do you believe in co-design?

KS : Shaghayegh Nemati .Yes, we always design a group in the studio and we are satisfied with the result

DL: Which people you interacted had the most influence on your design?

KS : Atelier colleagues always help me with their motivation and thinking

DL: Which books you read had the most effect on your design?

KS : Peter Eisenman's books have been very influential in my view of architecture

DL: How did you develop your skills as a master designer?

KS : I think analyzing and reading successful projects from great designers is a very good way to increase quality

DL: Irrelative of time and space, who you would want to meet, talk and discuss with?

KS : Norman Foster has always been a good role model for me and I welcome this meeting

DL: How do you feel about all the awards and recognition you had, is it hard to be famous?

KS : We try to present our collection through architectural competitions and show our quality and architectural look.

DL: What is your favorite color, place, food, season, thing and brand?

KS : Black-New York - Pizza _autumn _Dior

DL: What makes your day great as a designer, how do you motivate yourself?

KS : I think it's the best thing when the project design process is going great. I motivate myself every day by reviewing my goals

DL: When you were a little child, was it obvious that you would become a great designer?

KS : I didn't think much about it - but creating has always fascinated me

DL: What do you think about future; what do you see will happen in thousand years from now?

KS : I do not think the world will exist in another 1000 years

DL: Please tell us anything you wish your fans to know about you, your design and anything else?

KS : We strive to be among the top 10 designers in the world. Thank you for the opportunity
