Design Legends ("DL") had the distinct honour to interview legendary designer FLAVIEN NEYERTZ ("FN") for their original perspective and innovative approach to design as well as their creative lifestyle, we are very pleased to share our interview with our distinguished readers.

DL: Could you please tell us a bit about your design background and education?

FN : I studied Mechanical Engineering with a specialization in Industrial Design at the University of Applied Sciences in Piraeus. After completing my studies, I worked for five years with the design agency Orange - Circle in Shanghai, where I collaborated with prominent companies like Bosch, Colgate, major toy manufacturers, and furniture brands like Markor. Currently, I’ve been part of the Searider team for the past two years, continuing to explore my passion for vehicle and product design alongside a talented team of engineers and designers.

DL: What motivates you to design in general, why did you become a designer?

FN : What motivates me to design is the ability to solve problems and create something meaningful. I became a designer because I’ve always been drawn to how things work and wanted to make everyday products better. The mix of creativity and functionality is what drives me.

DL: Did you choose to become a designer, or you were forced to become one?

FN : I chose to become a designer. It was a natural decision for me, as I’ve always had a passion for creating and improving things. Designing felt like the perfect way to combine my interests in both aesthetics and engineering.

DL: What do you design, what type of designs do you wish to design more of?

FN : I design a wide range of products, including vehicles, watercraft, consumer goods, and furniture. I would love to focus more on designing innovative watercraft and cutting-edge transportation vehicles.

DL: What should young designers do to become a design legend like you?

FN : Young designers should stay curious, constantly improve their skills, and never stop learning. Embrace challenges, be open to feedback, and always push the boundaries of creativity while staying true to your own vision.

DL: What distinguishes between a good designer and a great designer?

FN : A good designer delivers functional and aesthetically pleasing solutions, while a great designer pushes the boundaries of innovation, anticipates future needs, and creates designs that resonate deeply with people. Great designers excel in both creativity and impact

DL: What makes a good design a really good design, how do you evaluate good design?

FN : A really good design seamlessly combines functionality, aesthetics, and user experience. It solves a problem effectively, is visually appealing, and enhances the user's interaction with the product. I evaluate good design by considering its usability, innovation, and the emotional connection it establishes with users.

DL: What is the value of good design? Why should everyone invest in good design?

FN : Good design adds significant value by improving functionality, enhancing user experience, and creating emotional connections. Ergonomics is a crucial aspect, as it ensures comfort and usability, which are essential for user satisfaction. Investing in good design leads to better products, greater satisfaction, and often increased market success. It makes experiences more enjoyable, drives innovation, and boosts efficiency

DL: What would you design and who would you design for if you had the time?

FN : If I had the time, I would explore designing cutting-edge vehicles across various modes, from watercraft to automobiles and motorcycles. My goal would be to create innovative, sustainable solutions that blend advanced technology with exceptional user experience. I’d design for a diverse range of users, focusing on enhancing performance, comfort, and environmental impact.

DL: What is the dream project you haven’t yet had time to realize?

FN : My dream project is to develop a groundbreaking, eco-friendly vehicle that seamlessly integrates advanced technologies and sustainable materials. This project would combine elements from watercraft, automobiles, and motorcycles to create a versatile, high-performance machine. I envision it offering unparalleled efficiency, user experience, and environmental benefits, pushing the boundaries of design and engineering.

DL: What is your secret recipe of success in design, what is your secret ingredient?

FN : My secret ingredient for success in design is a relentless curiosity coupled with a deep understanding of user needs. By continuously exploring new technologies and materials, while staying attuned to what users truly value, I ensure that my designs are both innovative and practical. This blend of exploration and empathy helps me create solutions that stand out and make a meaningful impact.

DL: Who are some other design masters and legends you get inspired from?

FN : •Flavio Manzoni: The head of design at Ferrari, known for his groundbreaking work in automotive design and his ability to blend innovation with classic aesthetics. •Andrea Farrerasi: Ducati's design director, whose work combines performance with striking visual design, pushing the boundaries of motorcycle aesthetics. •Mitja Borkert: The head of design at Lamborghini, renowned for his bold and futuristic approach to automotive design. •Marcello Gandini: A legendary designer known for his influential work on iconic cars like the Lamborghini Miura and Countach, which have shaped the history of automotive design.

DL: What are your favorite designs by other designers, why do you like them?

FN : •Lamborghini Miura by Marcello Gandini: This design is iconic for its revolutionary aesthetics and impact on sports car design. Its sleek, aggressive lines and rear-engine layout set a new standard for high-performance vehicles. •Ferrari Roma by Flavio Manzoni: The Roma combines elegance and performance in a stunningly refined package. Its design reflects Ferrari’s commitment to crafting vehicles that are both luxurious and thrilling to drive. •Lamborghini Temerario by Mitja Borkert: The Temerario showcases cutting-edge design and aggressive styling, embodying Lamborghini’s tradition of bold and innovative car designs. Its dynamic form and striking features highlight the brand’s vision for the future of high-performance vehicles. •Ducati Panigale V4 by Andrea Ferraresi: The Panigale V4 stands out for its integration of cutting-edge technology and visually striking design. Its aerodynamic form and aggressive stance are a testament to Ducati's commitment to both performance and style.

DL: What is your greatest design, which aspects of that design makes you think it is great?

FN : My greatest design is the Searider watercraft. What makes this design stand out is its innovative integration of aesthetics, functionality, and advanced technology. The Searider combines sleek, aerodynamic lines with cutting-edge features that enhance performance and user experience. Its design reflects a deep understanding of both engineering principles and user needs, resulting in a product that is not only visually striking but also highly functional and efficient on the water. The thoughtful use of materials and the seamless blend of form and function are key aspects that make this design exceptional.

DL: How could people improve themselves to be better designers, what did you do?

FN : To improve as a designer, focus on continuous learning and practice. Stay curious and explore various fields of design, technology, and materials. Engage in hands-on projects and seek feedback from peers to refine your skills. I personally dedicated time to working with diverse teams and tackling a wide range of design challenges, which greatly expanded my knowledge and expertise. Embracing both successes and failures as learning opportunities has been crucial in my development as a designer

DL: If you hadn’t become a designer, what would you have done?

FN : If I hadn't become a designer, I would have likely pursued a career in engineering or technology. My passion for problem-solving and creating innovative solutions would still drive me towards fields where I could work on complex projects and develop new ideas.

DL: How do you define design, what is design for you?

FN : For me, design is about creating meaningful interactions between a user and a product. It’s more than just aesthetics; it’s about how well a product communicates its function and value to the user. Good design facilitates a seamless experience, making the user feel understood and engaged. It's a dialogue between the product and the user, where every detail is crafted to enhance usability and satisfaction.

DL: Who helped you to reach these heights, who was your biggest supporter?

FN : My biggest supporter has been my family, who has been a constant source of encouragement and inspiration. Additionally, my colleagues and mentors throughout my career, including those from the Searider team, have played a crucial role in my professional growth. Their support and guidance have been instrumental in helping me reach my goals and advance in the design field.

DL: What helped you to become a great designer?

FN : Becoming a great designer has been a result of continuous learning, hands-on experience, and collaboration. Working with diverse teams, like those at Orange - Circle and Searider, has exposed me to various perspectives and techniques. Additionally, my education in mechanical engineering with a focus on industrial design provided a strong foundation. Staying curious, experimenting with new ideas, and seeking feedback have also been key in refining my skills and achieving excellence in design.

DL: What were the obstacles you faced before becoming a design master?

FN : 20.What were the obstacles you faced before becoming a design master? Before reaching mastery in design, I faced several obstacles, including the challenge of balancing creativity with technical constraints and the need to continually adapt to evolving industry standards. Early in my career, working with different design agencies and clients required navigating varying expectations and overcoming limitations in resources and technology. Additionally, staying motivated and pushing through periods of self-doubt and setbacks were crucial in developing resilience and honing my skills.

DL: How do you think designers should present their work?

FN : Designers should present their work with clarity and purpose, highlighting both the aesthetic and functional aspects of their designs. Effective presentations should include a clear narrative that explains the design process, the problem-solving approach, and the final outcomes. Using high-quality visuals, such as detailed renderings, prototypes, and user scenarios, helps convey the design’s impact and value. Engaging storytelling, combined with solid evidence of user benefits and design rationale, makes a compelling case for the design and ensures it resonates with the audience.

DL: What’s your next design project, what should we expect from you in future?

FN : My next design project focuses on the new Searider models, which are set to introduce innovative features and advancements in watercraft technology. We’re working on enhancing performance, comfort, and user experience, integrating cutting-edge materials and designs. Expect these new models to push the boundaries of what’s possible in watercraft, reflecting our commitment to innovation and excellence in every detail

DL: What’s your ultimate goal as a designer?

FN : My ultimate goal as a designer is to create impactful, functional, and aesthetically pleasing solutions that enhance people's lives and experiences. I aim to push the boundaries of design across various domains, from vehicles to consumer products, by integrating cutting-edge technology and sustainable practices. Ultimately, I strive to leave a lasting legacy through designs that inspire and elevate the industry.

DL: What people expect from an esteemed designer such as yourself?

FN : People expect an esteemed designer like myself to deliver innovative and high-quality solutions that effectively address user needs and solve complex problems. They look for originality, attention to detail, and a deep understanding of both functionality and aesthetics. Additionally, there's an expectation to stay ahead of industry trends, contribute to the advancement of design practices, and consistently produce work that stands out for its creativity and impact.

DL: How does design help create a better society?

FN : Design plays a crucial role in creating a better society by improving functionality, accessibility, and overall quality of life. Good design addresses real needs and challenges, making everyday tasks easier and more enjoyable. It can enhance safety, promote sustainability, and foster inclusivity. By focusing on user experience and social impact, design can drive positive change, influence behavior, and contribute to a more equitable and efficient world.

DL: What are you currently working on that you are especially excited about?

FN : I’m particularly excited about the new models we’re developing at Searider. We’re working on some innovative designs that push the boundaries of performance and user experience. These new models incorporate advanced technologies and sleek aesthetics, and I’m eager to see how they will transform the market and meet the evolving needs of our customers.

DL: Which design projects gave you the most satisfaction, why?

FN : The design projects that gave me the most satisfaction include our work with Searider, Bosch, and Colgate. With Searider, the satisfaction comes from innovating in the watercraft industry, pushing the limits of design and technology. Working with Bosch and Colgate allowed me to blend functionality with aesthetics in consumer products, creating solutions that enhance everyday life. Each project offered unique challenges and opportunities, and the successful outcomes reinforced my passion for impactful design.

DL: What would you like to see changed in design industry in the coming years?

FN : I would like to see the design industry increasingly embrace sustainability and innovative materials. Greater collaboration across disciplines could also foster more holistic solutions.

DL: Where do you think the design field is headed next?

FN : The design field is likely to focus more on integrating advanced technologies like AI and smart systems into products, while maintaining a strong emphasis on user experience and sustainability.

DL: How long does it take you to finalize a design project?

FN : The time to finalize a design project varies; it can take from a few weeks to several months depending on complexity and development phases

DL: When you have a new design project, where do you start?

FN : I start a new design project by thoroughly understanding the problem and user needs. I then move on to concept development, sketching, and iterative prototyping.

DL: What is your life motto as a designer?

FN : My life motto as a designer is: “Design is not just about creating objects; it's about enhancing experiences and solving real problems.”

DL: Do you think design sets the trends or trends set the designs?

FN : I believe design both sets and follows trends. While designers often create innovations that drive trends, they are also influenced by existing trends and cultural shifts.

DL: What is the role of technology when you design?

FN : Technology plays a crucial role in design by enabling more precise modeling, rapid prototyping, and advanced simulations, which enhance the efficiency and creativity of the design process

DL: What kind of design software and equipment do you use in your work?

FN : I use a range of design software and equipment including Autodesk Sketchbook or Photoshop and adobe suite for sketching and graphics, Alias Autodesk for Sub-D modeling, SolidWorks for detailed modeling, and various prototyping tools

DL: What is the role of the color, materials and ambient in design?

FN : Color, materials, and ambient conditions are fundamental in design as they influence the aesthetics, functionality, and user experience of a product. They help to convey the intended message and create the desired atmosphere.

DL: What do you wish people to ask about your design?

FN : I hope people ask about the thought process behind my designs and how they address real-world problems or enhance user experiences.

DL: When you see a new great design or product what comes into your mind?

FN : When I see a new great design or product, I think about the problem it solves, its innovative aspects, and how it might inspire or influence future designs.

DL: Who is your ideal design partner? Do you believe in co-design?

FN : My ideal design partner would be someone with complementary skills and a shared vision for creativity and innovation. I strongly believe in co-design as it often leads to richer and more diverse outcomes.

DL: Which people you interacted had the most influence on your design?

FN : Interactions with clients and colleagues from diverse fields, such as those within the Searider team, have had significant influence on my design approach and perspective

DL: Which books you read had the most effect on your design?

FN : One book that had a significant impact on my design perspective is The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho. Its themes of pursuing dreams and finding one's personal legend resonate deeply with my approach to creativity and design.

DL: How did you develop your skills as a master designer?

FN : I developed my skills as a master designer through a combination of formal education, hands-on experience, and continuous learning. Working with prominent companies, collaborating on diverse projects, and staying updated with industry trends and technologies have all contributed to my growth and expertise in the field.

DL: Irrelative of time and space, who you would want to meet, talk and discuss with?

FN : Irrespective of time and space, I would love to meet and discuss with Leonardo da Vinci. His profound curiosity and genius in integrating art, science, and engineering are incredibly inspiring.

DL: How do you feel about all the awards and recognition you had, is it hard to be famous?

FN : Receiving awards and recognition is gratifying, but it also brings its own set of challenges. The pressure to maintain a high standard and the expectations of continuous innovation can be intense. However, these accolades also serve as motivation and validation for the hard work and dedication invested in design.

DL: What is your favorite color, place, food, season, thing and brand?

FN : My favorite color is blue, my favorite place is Athens, Greece, where I find inspiration in its rich history and vibrant culture. I enjoy Mediterranean cuisine, with its fresh and flavorful ingredients. My favorite season is spring, as it symbolizes renewal and creativity. As for brands, I appreciate Ferrari for its blend of engineering excellence and design.

DL: Please tell us a little memoir, a funny thing you had experienced as a designer?

FN : One amusing memory from my design career involves an unexpected twist of inspiration. While working on a new interior design for an SUV, I was struggling with a particularly challenging feature. One day, as I was taking a break at a local café, I noticed a child's toy being played with at a nearby table. The simple, playful design of the toy sparked a creative idea that led to a breakthrough in my project. I laughed to myself, realizing that sometimes the best solutions come from the most unexpected sources. It was a reminder that inspiration can be found everywhere, even in the most ordinary moments.

DL: What makes your day great as a designer, how do you motivate yourself?

FN : A great day for me as a designer is one where I make significant progress on a project or solve a challenging problem. I stay motivated by setting clear goals, seeking inspiration from various sources, and celebrating small successes along the way.

DL: When you were a little child, was it obvious that you would become a great designer?

FN : As a child, my passion for creating and understanding how things work was evident, but it wasn’t clear at the time that I would become a great designer. My curiosity and enthusiasm for design developed and solidified over the years through education and experience.

DL: What do you think about future; what do you see will happen in thousand years from now?

FN : In a thousand years, I envision a world where design and technology are seamlessly integrated into every aspect of life. The boundaries between physical and digital realms will likely blur, leading to advanced, adaptive environments that respond intuitively to human needs. Sustainability will be a core principle, with designs focused on minimizing environmental impact and enhancing resource efficiency. The role of design will evolve to address complex global challenges, creating solutions that promote well-being and harmony on a planetary scale.

DL: Please tell us anything you wish your fans to know about you, your design and anything else?

FN : I’d like my fans to know that my design philosophy centers on creating solutions that are both innovative and deeply connected to their users. Each project is a blend of functionality, aesthetics, and a genuine understanding of the needs it addresses. I’m driven by a passion for pushing boundaries and exploring new technologies, but I always keep the user experience at the heart of my work. I appreciate the support and interest in my designs and am continually inspired by the feedback and interactions with those who engage with my work
