LEGENDARY INTERVIEW

Design Legends ("DL") had the distinct honour to interview legendary designer Enza Home Design Team ("EHDT") for their original perspective and innovative approach to design as well as their creative lifestyle, we are very pleased to share our interview with our distinguished readers.

DL: Could you please tell us a bit about your design background and education?

EHDT : Enza Home Design Team is an inhouse design department consists of 10 industiral designer, 1 interior designer, 1 architect and 2 furniture education graduates.

DL: What motivates you to design in general, why did you become a designer?

EHDT : Problem solving and creating something new and beautiful for user.

DL: Did you choose to become a designer, or you were forced to become one?

EHDT : Every Enza Home Design Team member is a curious researcher who loves to create new ideas, we believe one cannot be forced to design.

DL: What do you design, what type of designs do you wish to design more of?

EHDT : We basically design home furniture and accesories. It şs a wide product range that we are fond of. We are planning to design more accessible and sustainable designs in the future.

DL: What should young designers do to become a design legend like you?

EHDT : Research, observation and curiosity are the main aspects if you want to be successful in what you do.

DL: What distinguishes between a good designer and a great designer?

EHDT : Great designers are ambitious and determined; think more, design less and thnik about the user and the problem all the time.

DL: What makes a good design a really good design, how do you evaluate good design?

EHDT : Every design starts with a definition. Analyzing and stating the problem is the first key. So first of all a good design should fulfill its main purpose. It should have an easily understandable message; aesthetic values; should be appropriate for the target market and last but not least should have an original idea, philosophy behind that lead to an original product.

DL: What is the value of good design? Why should everyone invest in good design?

EHDT : From the first impressions to making your brand memorable and communicating the right message, investing in good design is a good business decision. Great design gives you a competitive edge, drives powerful marketing results, and ensures your brand stands out.

DL: What would you design and who would you design for if you had the time?

EHDT : We love the area we design in. And we would love to design all for home and interior for everyone all over the world. Learning about and designing for different cultures finding out solutions for either existing or probable problems is the most exciting experience for us.

DL: What is the dream project you haven’t yet had time to realize?

EHDT : As having a goal to be a global brand; we are planning to design transational, more accesible and sustainable furnitures for all around the world.

DL: What is your secret recipe of success in design, what is your secret ingredient?

EHDT : observing and researching about the briefs we set; working as a team that analyzes every decision, every thought from a different perspective trying to find the best answer and not settling for OK and searching for the right answer and of course our passion for design is and will be our recipe for success.

DL: Who are some other design masters and legends you get inspired from?

EHDT : Although there are so many names we could mention, we could easily start with the names we studied at univercity, Dieter Rams, Charles& Ray Eams, Alvar Allto are very important. Ronan&Erwan Bouroullec, Patricia Urquiola, Hella Jongerious are also inspirational. As a Turkish design team Defne Koz and Ayşe Bİrsel are also significantly important and inspirational designers for us.

DL: What is your greatest design, which aspects of that design makes you think it is great?

EHDT : ıt is not possible to state any designs to be great. We are aware that key to success is to work and study hard in order to achieve greatness. It is safe to say that we have not designed our greatest produst yet.

DL: How could people improve themselves to be better designers, what did you do?

EHDT : Research, Patience, curiosity, accepting failure and embracing to be wrong are so important.

DL: How do you define design, what is design for you?

EHDT : Basically we could define design as a method for problem solving. Gİving meaning to products and making user smile and enjoyşng the experience.

DL: Who helped you to reach these heights, who was your biggest supporter?

EHDT : We are so lucky to be a part of Yataş team, in which design is always supported by visionnary board of directors.

DL: What helped you to become a great designer?

EHDT : That title is yet to come :)

DL: What were the obstacles you faced before becoming a design master?

EHDT : we could not define ourselves as design masters yet. For becoming one we need to experience an holistic approach and becoming multiskilled is needed.

DL: How do you think designers should present their work?

EHDT : While desiging could be defined as problem solving, presenting design could easily be referred as story telling. Every design has a philosophy, narrative behind it. The designer also should be a good story teller, and reflect the story to their narrative.

DL: What’s your next design project, what should we expect from you in future?

EHDT : We are working on our Enza Home 2022 Collection, including specific products for US and Europe Markets.

DL: What people expect from an esteemed designer such as yourself?

EHDT : PUr main goal is to make success sustainable for inspiring future designers.

DL: How does design help create a better society?

EHDT : design helps us to engage, it keeps us connected to the world and ourselves. Design is communucating, depending on who we are. It is influential by understanding our behaviour and demographics.

DL: What are you currently working on that you are especially excited about?

EHDT : we are working on a global product collection for Enza Home. Discovering and learning new lifstyles and cultures, finding out different needs that we are not used to is the most exciting part of the process

DL: Which design projects gave you the most satisfaction, why?

EHDT : Every design project has its own story and uniqueness. With every project we discover and learn new things; so we could easily say that every project gives us a sense of satisfaction.

DL: How long does it take you to finalize a design project?

EHDT : Although time schedule differs according to the projects; it is safe to say that it takes nearly 1 year to finish a project.

DL: When you have a new design project, where do you start?

EHDT : we always start with defining the problem that leads us to the idea.

DL: Do you think design sets the trends or trends set the designs?

EHDT : A great design always sets the trends but a great design inspires from life itself.

DL: What is the role of technology when you design?

EHDT : Technology plays a vital role in design, since it shapes both design processes and life itself. The usage of modern technology performs the tasks in effective time and reasonable cost

DL: What kind of design software and equipment do you use in your work?

EHDT : We use both3D modelling and printing, also CAD software; vectorbased adobe programs,

DL: What is the role of the color, materials and ambient in design?

EHDT : We believe that Design is a holistic approach which consists of different elements. None of of them could be analyzed seperately or individually. They are of vital importance to fulfill the product design.

DL: Who is your ideal design partner? Do you believe in co-design?

EHDT : we are a multidiciplinary design team which is a fulfilling experience that allow us to grow, learn constantly.

DL: Which people you interacted had the most influence on your design?

EHDT : Marketing department, sales department and also R&D department are influencial on our designs.

DL: How did you develop your skills as a master designer?

EHDT : Observing, analysing surroundings, learning about technology, discovering alternative production processes are the main aspects that we could state.

DL: What makes your day great as a designer, how do you motivate yourself?

EHDT : We have two major motivationsi first is designing bestseller products for our firm and secondly it is a great motivator recieving international design awards.
