LEGENDARY INTERVIEW

Design Legends ("DL") had the distinct honour to interview legendary designer SHUNSUKE OHE ("SO") for their original perspective and innovative approach to design as well as their creative lifestyle, we are very pleased to share our interview with our distinguished readers.

DL: Could you please tell us a bit about your design background and education?

SO : I started studying architecture when I was in high school. After that, I became interested in interior design. After working for several companies, I founded LUSTYdesign in 2012, working on architectural design, interior design and interior coordination.

DL: What motivates you to design in general, why did you become a designer?

SO : I think that the profession of designer can express myself and please people.

DL: Did you choose to become a designer, or you were forced to become one?

SO : I chose it myself.

DL: What do you design, what type of designs do you wish to design more of?

SO : I especially want to design luxury resort hotels and luxury homes.

DL: What should young designers do to become a design legend like you?

SO : I'm also looking for it now. I am always proud of myself as a designer and think that I should always do my best.

DL: What distinguishes between a good designer and a great designer?

SO : I don't know. sorry.

DL: What makes a good design a really good design, how do you evaluate good design?

SO : A design that has both beauty and practicality.

DL: What is the value of good design? Why should everyone invest in good design?

SO : Contribution to improving the quality of life.

DL: What would you design and who would you design for if you had the time?

SO : I want to design a house for my parents.

DL: What is the dream project you haven’t yet had time to realize?

SO : It is a new hotel project.

DL: What is your secret recipe of success in design, what is your secret ingredient?

SO : It's about analyzing the pros and cons of other designers' designs in your own way.

DL: Who are some other design masters and legends you get inspired from?

SO : I haven't been there lately, but I used to like Jean Nouvel very much.

DL: What are your favorite designs by other designers, why do you like them?

SO : There are many designs that I find great, and I like them for a variety of reasons.

DL: What is your greatest design, which aspects of that design makes you think it is great?

SO : I haven't produced the best yet.

DL: How could people improve themselves to be better designers, what did you do?

SO : I increase the design fee, travel wherever I like and spend a relaxing time.

DL: If you hadn’t become a designer, what would you have done?

SO : Craftsman

DL: How do you define design, what is design for you?

SO : I think it is essential to life and improves the quality of life.

DL: What helped you to become a great designer?

SO : It is a design designed by an excellent designer other than myself.

DL: What were the obstacles you faced before becoming a design master?

SO : I'm not a design master yet. I need to improve my skills and acquire skills that will convince everyone.

DL: How do you think designers should present their work?

SO : I think the method is different for each person, I think it's best to have them actually see the real thing.

DL: What’s your next design project, what should we expect from you in future?

SO : Home design, office renovation, car dealer showrooms, etc. I will continue to improve my design skills and create a better space.

DL: What’s your ultimate goal as a designer?

SO : Make people's lives better with their own designs And I also want to design while always feeling happy.

DL: What people expect from an esteemed designer such as yourself?

SO : Creating designs that excite everyone.

DL: How does design help create a better society?

SO : It excites people's hearts and makes them positive.

DL: What are you currently working on that you are especially excited about?

SO : This is a detached house project. I feel it will be pretty good.

DL: Which design projects gave you the most satisfaction, why?

SO : It's a doctor's home renovation project. I noticed the splendor of achromatic colors, and my design variations expanded.

DL: What would you like to see changed in design industry in the coming years?

SO : I want it to be more familiar to everyone.

DL: Where do you think the design field is headed next?

SO : I don't know.

DL: How long does it take you to finalize a design project?

SO : Some take days and some take months.

DL: When you have a new design project, where do you start?

SO : It depends on the occasion, but first of all, I often imagine a vague space design.

DL: What is your life motto as a designer?

SO : Be creative at any time, anywhere.

DL: Do you think design sets the trends or trends set the designs?

SO : I think both are correct.

DL: What is the role of technology when you design?

SO : I think it's a tool that visualizes the inside of my head.

DL: What kind of design software and equipment do you use in your work?

SO : I use Mac for hardware and "Vector works" for design software

DL: What is the role of the color, materials and ambient in design?

SO : I think it's very important. I think it determines the quality of the space.

DL: What do you wish people to ask about your design?

SO : What I value as a designer.

DL: When you see a new great design or product what comes into your mind?

SO : I will unravel whether the design was created by such a process. And I wonder if I have that skill as well.

DL: Who is your ideal design partner? Do you believe in co-design?

SO : Someone who has design skills that I lack. I think co-design may sometimes be good.

DL: Which people you interacted had the most influence on your design?

SO : Nothing in particular.

DL: Which books you read had the most effect on your design?

SO : I do not remember. sorry!

DL: How did you develop your skills as a master designer?

SO : Thinking about design every day, I am not satisfied with my current skills and continue to supplement my skills.

DL: Irrelative of time and space, who you would want to meet, talk and discuss with?

SO : I want to talk to myself in my previous life.

DL: How do you feel about all the awards and recognition you had, is it hard to be famous?

SO : I can't say anything because it's not famous yet.

DL: What is your favorite color, place, food, season, thing and brand?

SO : White,Hawaii,curry,summer,looking at the sea,porsche.

DL: What makes your day great as a designer, how do you motivate yourself?

SO : I am grateful that I have my own life every day. And I swear to my ancestors that I will enjoy my life.

DL: When you were a little child, was it obvious that you would become a great designer?

SO : No. I just had a vague desire to be a designer.

DL: What do you think about future; what do you see will happen in thousand years from now?

SO : I don't know at all. A new civilization may have begun.

DL: Please tell us anything you wish your fans to know about you, your design and anything else?

SO : My base of activity is Japan, but I am happy to accept offers from outside Japan.
