Design Legends ("DL") had the distinct honour to interview legendary designer Mohamd Sadeq habibzadeh Harris ("MSHH") for their original perspective and innovative approach to design as well as their creative lifestyle, we are very pleased to share our interview with our distinguished readers.

DL: Could you please tell us a bit about your design background and education?

MSHH : I have a bachelor’s degree in mining, and during my time at university, I was introduced to the fascinating world of stones and gems. This sparked my interest in jewelry design, leading me to explore how I could blend my technical knowledge with my artistic passion.

DL: What motivates you to design in general, why did you become a designer?

MSHH : What motivates me to design is the desire to contribute to making the world a more beautiful place. I believe that design has the power to leave a lasting impact, as the creations we make can outlive us, continuing to inspire and bring beauty long after we’re gone.

DL: Did you choose to become a designer, or you were forced to become one?

MSHH : Did you choose to become a designer, or you were forced to become one? My designs chose me. The concepts and ideas I work with call out to me, and I feel a natural urge to bring them to life. It’s not something I was forced into, but rather a path that unfolded as I connected with the creative process.

DL: What do you design, what type of designs do you wish to design more of?

MSHH : I design jewelry, primarily brooches and necklaces, often inspired by nature and personal experiences. I would love to design more pieces that blend symbolic elements with natural materials, creating timeless works that tell deeper stories.

DL: What should young designers do to become a design legend like you?

MSHH : To become a design legend, young designers should pay close attention to the world around them. There are countless stories in their surroundings, and the key is to find the ones that resonate with them, allowing their passion to fuel their creativity.

DL: What distinguishes between a good designer and a great designer?

MSHH : A good designer creates work that resonates with themselves, while a great designer designs in a way that connects not only with their own emotions but also with the community. Their work sparks a broader emotional connection and impact.

DL: What makes a good design a really good design, how do you evaluate good design?

MSHH : A really good design goes beyond aesthetics; it tells a story and evokes emotions while serving its purpose. I evaluate good design by its ability to connect with people, its functionality, and how well it communicates the intended message or concept.

DL: What is the value of good design? Why should everyone invest in good design?

MSHH : The value of good design lies in its ability to create meaningful connections, enhance experiences, and solve problems effectively. Investing in good design elevates both functionality and aesthetics, making products more impactful, long-lasting, and memorable. It adds value not just in the short term, but over time.

DL: What would you design and who would you design for if you had the time?

MSHH : If I had the time, I would design something special for my mother. I’ve always had a deep desire to create a piece that reflects my love and appreciation for her, something truly personal and meaningful.

DL: What is the dream project you haven’t yet had time to realize?

MSHH : My dream project is to create a collection that tells a story of transformation and connection, using sustainable materials to represent growth and change. It's a project that blends my love for nature with my desire to make a lasting, positive impact on the world.

DL: What is your secret recipe of success in design, what is your secret ingredient?

MSHH : My secret ingredient is a deep connection to the stories behind each design. I believe that when you design with genuine emotion and purpose, it creates something far more impactful than just an aesthetically pleasing object. Authenticity and passion are key to success.

DL: Who are some other design masters and legends you get inspired from?

MSHH : I draw inspiration from designers like Coco Chanel for her timeless elegance, Jean-Paul Gaultier for his bold creativity, and Alexander McQueen for his emotional storytelling through fashion. Their ability to blend artistry with innovation deeply influences my own approach to design.

DL: What are your favorite designs by other designers, why do you like them?

MSHH : My favorite designer is Melanie Georgacopoulos. I admire her ability to merge contemporary design with traditional craftsmanship, creating unique and meaningful pieces. Her work has a refined elegance and a distinct, innovative style that inspires me.

DL: What is your greatest design, which aspects of that design makes you think it is great?

MSHH : My greatest design is the Blue Rose Brooch. Its beauty lies in how I captured the delicate essence of a rose while incorporating intricate details and a symbolic meaning. The balance between elegance and strength in the design is what makes it stand out for me.

DL: How could people improve themselves to be better designers, what did you do?

MSHH : To improve as a designer, it's essential to stay curious and continuously learn. I focused on understanding different materials, experimenting with new techniques, and drawing inspiration from both my personal experiences and the world around me. Constant practice and reflection on my work have been key to my growth.

DL: If you hadn’t become a designer, what would you have done?

MSHH : If I hadn’t become a designer, I would have pursued a career that still involved creativity and creation, something that allows me to express and build new ideas, as that sense of making and bringing things to life is essential to me.

DL: How do you define design, what is design for you?

MSHH : For me, design is the process of creating something meaningful that not only serves a purpose but also evokes emotions. It's about problem-solving with creativity, blending form, function, and emotional connection to make the world more beautiful and functional.

DL: Who helped you to reach these heights, who was your biggest supporter?

MSHH : Without a doubt, my biggest supporter has been my wife. Her encouragement, belief in my work, and constant support have been invaluable in helping me reach where I am today.

DL: What helped you to become a great designer?

MSHH : What helped me become a great designer is my continuous learning, deep connection to the stories behind each piece, and the support from those who believed in my vision. Staying true to my artistic instincts and pushing boundaries has been crucial in developing my design identity.

DL: What were the obstacles you faced before becoming a design master?

MSHH : Before becoming a design master, I faced several obstacles, including finding my unique voice in a crowded field and learning to balance creativity with practicality. Overcoming self-doubt and the challenge of translating emotions into tangible designs also played a significant role in shaping my journey.

DL: How do you think designers should present their work?

MSHH : Designers should present their work with clarity and context. They should highlight the inspiration, the process, and the key elements of the design, showing how it fits into a larger concept. Visual presentations, such as high-quality images or prototypes, help convey the details, while storytelling adds depth and emotional connection to the work.

DL: What’s your next design project, what should we expect from you in future?

MSHH : My next project will explore the theme of transformation, using dynamic forms to represent change and growth. I aim to create designs that balance elegance with intricate details, blending organic shapes with modern techniques. DL: What’s your ultimate goal as a designer?

MSHH : My ultimate goal as a designer is to create pieces that resonate emotionally with people while maintaining artistic integrity. I aim to blend beauty with meaning, turning personal experiences and inspirations into timeless designs that connect deeply with their wearers.

DL: What people expect from an esteemed designer such as yourself?

MSHH : People expect originality, quality, and emotional depth from an esteemed designer. They look for pieces that are not only visually stunning but also meaningful, with a story or concept behind them. DL: How does design help create a better society?

MSHH : Design can shape a better society by fostering creativity, innovation, and inclusivity. It can address social issues, enhance user experiences, and inspire positive change. DL: What are you currently working on that you are especially excited about?

MSHH : I'm currently working on a new collection that explores the balance between fragility and strength. The designs incorporate delicate details alongside bold, structural elements, symbolizing resilience in the face of challenges. I'm excited to bring this contrast to life and see how it resonates with others.

DL: Which design projects gave you the most satisfaction, why?

MSHH : The projects that gave me the most satisfaction are those where I could blend personal emotions and meaningful concepts with intricate design. For instance, the "Hope Garden" brooch and my thorn-inspired necklace were deeply satisfying because they conveyed powerful stories of resilience and love, while also pushing my creative boundaries.

DL: What would you like to see changed in design industry in the coming years?

MSHH : I'd like to see more emphasis on sustainability and ethical practices in the design industry. As designers, we have the power to influence not only aesthetics but also environmental and social responsibility. A greater focus on using sustainable materials and supporting fair labor practices could bring positive change to the entire industry.

DL: Where do you think the design field is headed next?

MSHH : The design field is likely to head toward a deeper integration of technology and sustainability. With advancements in 3D printing, AI, and digital fabrication, designs will become more personalized and innovative. At the same time, there will be a stronger focus on eco-friendly materials and ethical practices, ensuring that design contributes positively to the environment and society.

DL: How long does it take you to finalize a design project?

MSHH : The time it takes to finalize a design project depends on the complexity of the concept, but I often start by mentally building the design before moving to paper, sketches, and digital tools. Once I have a clear vision, the process becomes smoother, but it can still take several weeks to perfect every detail.

DL: When you have a new design project, where do you start?

MSHH : When starting a new design project, I begin by exploring the concept in my mind, letting it take shape before sketching it on paper. I then refine it further through digital software, experimenting with details and proportions. Inspiration can come from personal experiences, nature, or abstract ideas, but it always begins with a vision I want to bring to life.

DL: What is your life motto as a designer?

I believe that to design something truly special, you must look beyond the ordinary, embrace unique perspectives, and challenge the conventional. Every design should reflect a new way of thinking and a bold, original expression.

MSHH : Technology plays a significant role in my design process, especially when it comes to refining and bringing ideas to life. Digital tools allow me to experiment with shapes, textures, and proportions in ways that traditional methods cannot. They also help streamline the process, enabling precise details and faster prototyping, which enhances creativity and innovation in my work.

DL: What kind of design software and equipment do you use in your work?

MSHH : I use a combination of design software to bring my ideas to life. Typically, I work with Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop for detailed sketches and visualizations. For 3D modeling, I rely on Rhino and Blender. In terms of equipment, I use a high-quality drawing tablet and a powerful computer to handle the software and design files. These tools allow me to experiment and perfect every aspect of my work.

DL: What is the role of the color, materials and ambient in design?

MSHH : Color, materials, and ambiance are essential in setting the mood and communicating the message of a design. Color evokes emotions, while materials add texture, depth, and sensory experience to the piece. The right ambiance, whether through lighting, setting, or presentation, enhances the design’s impact and allows the viewer to fully appreciate its details and intent. Together, these elements work in harmony to create a cohesive and meaningful design.

DL: What do you wish people to ask about your design?

MSHH : I wish people would ask about the story behind my designs—what inspired them, the emotions they convey, and how they reflect personal experiences or concepts. Understanding the meaning and the process behind each piece adds depth to the design and creates a stronger connection between the work and the wearer.

DL: When you see a new great design or product what comes into your mind?

MSHH : When I see a new great design or product, I immediately think about the thought process behind it—how the designer balanced creativity, functionality, and aesthetics. I also wonder about the materials and techniques used, and how they contribute to the overall experience. It's inspiring to see how innovative ideas come together in a way that feels both fresh and purposeful.

DL: Who is your ideal design partner? Do you believe in co-design?

MSHH : My ideal design partner would be someone who brings a fresh perspective, challenges my thinking, and encourages new ideas. I believe in co-design because collaborating with others allows for the fusion of different styles and concepts, enriching the creative process. Different viewpoints often lead to unexpected and exciting results, pushing boundaries and expanding the possibilities of design.

DL: Which people you interacted had the most influence on your design?

MSHH : The people who have had the most influence on my design are those who bring diverse perspectives and ideas. My wife, who is my biggest supporter, has always inspired me with her insights. Mentors, like Melanie Georgacopoulos, have also shaped my design philosophy, encouraging me to blend elegance with meaning. Additionally, interactions with fellow designers and creatives challenge my thinking, leading to new paths in my work.

DL: Which books you read had the most effect on your design?

MSHH : Books that explore both design theory and personal creativity have had the most effect on my work. I’ve found books like "The Design of Everyday Things" by Don Norman and "Creative Confidence" by Tom Kelley and David Kelley particularly impactful. They emphasize the importance of user-centered design and the power of creativity in solving problems, which has influenced how I approach my own designs. Reading about different design philosophies and practices has helped me refine my style and expand my creative boundaries.

DL: How did you develop your skills as a master designer?

MSHH : I developed my skills through a combination of formal education, hands-on practice, and continuous exploration. Constantly challenging myself with new design concepts and techniques has been essential. I’ve learned from both my successes and mistakes, always striving to improve. Interacting with mentors, attending design events, and absorbing feedback has also been crucial in refining my skills and expanding my creative vision.

DL: Irrelative of time and space, who you would want to meet, talk and discuss with?

MSHH : Jean Schlumberger would be an incredible person to meet. His innovative approach to jewelry design, blending art with nature in such a unique way, is truly inspiring. I’d love to discuss his creative process, his inspirations, and how he navigated the world of high jewelry with his distinctive style.

DL: How do you feel about all the awards and recognition you had, is it hard to be famous?

MSHH : Winning awards and receiving recognition is definitely rewarding, but it also brings a heavy responsibility. While it’s gratifying to see my work appreciated, it also motivates me to maintain a high standard and continue evolving. The pressure to innovate and stay true to my vision can be challenging, but it also pushes me to grow.

DL: What is your favorite color, place, food, season, thing and brand?

MSHH : Those are wonderful favorites! Navy blue has such a rich, elegant feel, and autumn brings a special charm with its colors and atmosphere. Kebab is always a delicious choice, and A. Lange & Söhne is renowned for its precision and craftsmanship, aligning well with my design philosophy.

DL: Please tell us a little memoir, a funny thing you had experienced as a designer?

MSHH : One funny experience I had was during a photoshoot for a brooch. After the shoot was done, we realized that the brooch had somehow stayed on the model's clothing and was taken home with her. We had to contact her to get it back, which was a bit of a humorous and unexpected situation! It reminded me how small details can lead to amusing outcomes.

DL: What makes your day great as a designer, how do you motivate yourself?

MSHH : A great day for me as a designer starts with the flow of creativity—when ideas come together effortlessly and I can see my vision taking shape. The satisfaction of solving a design challenge or refining a detail always feels rewarding. I motivate myself by focusing on the emotional impact of my designs and reminding myself that each project is a new opportunity to grow and experiment. The support from my wife and the excitement of bringing a concept to life also keeps me energized and driven.

DL: When you were a little child, was it obvious that you would become a great designer?

MSHH : When I was a child, it wasn’t obvious that I would become a designer, but I always had a passion for creating. At 19, I designed a bronze necklace for my girlfriend. That was one of the moments when I realized how much I enjoyed the process of designing and crafting something meaningful for someone special. It was the beginning of my journey as a designer.

DL: What do you think about future; what do you see will happen in thousand years from now?

MSHH : In a thousand years, I imagine design will evolve alongside technological advancements, with the possibility of creating fully personalized and sustainable creations. The boundary between art, technology, and human experience might blur, with designs not just reflecting beauty but also integrating seamlessly into daily life and enhancing our well-being. I believe the principles of innovation, creativity, and connection will remain timeless, even if the tools and materials we use change drastically. Design will continue to shape and reflect humanity’s values and aspirations, transcending time.

DL: Please tell us anything you wish your fans to know about you, your design and anything else?

MSHH : I would want my fans to know that my designs are a reflection of my inner thoughts and emotions. I believe in listening to my inner voice, which guides me through every creative decision. Each piece I create has a personal story or meaning behind it, and I aim to bring that emotional depth into every design. I hope my work resonates with others and inspires them to embrace their own unique creative paths. My designs are not just about aesthetics—they are about connecting on a deeper level and sharing a part of my journey with the world.
