LEGENDARY INTERVIEW

Design Legends ("DL") had the distinct honour to interview legendary designer Marian Visterniceanu ("MV") for their original perspective and innovative approach to design as well as their creative lifestyle, we are very pleased to share our interview with our distinguished readers.

DL: Could you please tell us a bit about your design background and education?

MV : I come from a family of artists, my father is a traditional craftsman in artistic wood processing in the Republic of Moldova. My mother is also passionate about making and decorating wooden items while my close relatives are painters and musicians. I knew what beauty was from a young age. Because I was always the first at artistic activities in school, I was seen as “A man of art", I had no other choice. Willingly and encouraged by everyone, I continued to study interior design because I was motivated in this direction. An award-winning designer and interior architect that brings revolutionary design concepts and always offers”something extra” in terms of beauty and uniqueness. By age 33 he is a design director at Design Solutions SRL and ADA Studio based in Moldova. Marian has developed the platform ArchitectureDesignArt.com - specifically for the next generation of up-and-coming interiors. In his 14 years of experience, Marian has helped over 250 clients invest correctly in business spaces, hotels, restaurants, and residential spaces of over $300 MM. DL: What do you design, what type of designs do you wish to design more of?

MV : I am a contemporary designer, but because I am passionate and I know a lot of history, I love to highlight classic styles. I am exclusively focusing on luxury projects, projects of millions. Specialised in residential spaces, my projects offer comfort for millionaires and billionaires.

DL: What should young designers do to become a design legend like you?

MV : Regarding this, I would recommend them to read my book, in which I talk about my experience as a designer. The book is called "Why Am I Not a Designer?" and is meant to cultivate the design profession, explaining who a designer really is. Dear young specialist, create your own design style, don't let yourself be overwhelmed by trends.

DL: What makes a good design a really good design, how do you evaluate good design?

MV : For me, design is a science that combines exact theory with art, resulting in a golden intersection in all its forms. Everything surrounding us is created with this formula.

DL: What is the value of good design? Why should everyone invest in good design?

MV : Every design has a purpose. If a design project fulfills the task for which it was created, it means that it is verry good.

DL: What is your secret recipe of success in design, what is your secret ingredient?

MV : A good design is one that perfectly meets the requirements for which it was designed. My success is due to the ability to hear my client's request. I'm a good psychologist.

DL: What is your greatest design, which aspects of that design makes you think it is great?

MV : Every project I created is unique and different from all others. I don't have a design style which represents me, though I wish I had, but the footprint of over 250 beneficiaries with different requirements and 253 projects in 10 years of activity has taught me to be diverse. It made me know perfectly all the styles and practice the mastery of interior design in all its directions, applying in all those situations a well-polished aesthetic and ergonomic formula - the formula for creating a perfect interior for a certain client. My projects are my clients. They find themselves in the designs I created for them.

DL: If you hadn’t become a designer, what would you have done?

MV : If I wasn’t a designer, I would have been an Architect.

DL: How do you define design, what is design for you?

MV : For me, design is a science that combines exact theory with art, resulting in a golden intersection in all its forms. Everything surrounding us is created with this formula.

DL: Who helped you to reach these heights, who was your biggest supporter?

MV : Trust me, and the desire to make the world more beautiful.

DL: What helped you to become a great designer?

MV : A lot of work! Based on the clients' needs, I managed to form a professional team that could create the perfect project, tailored specifically for each client. Working in the same way as the parts of a mechanical watch, a team work can create the most customized interior design projects. The company offers complete design services, from ideas to constructions, furniture and decorative pieces in the home; helping clients to save time, nerves and money. The interior design department is at clients’ disposal to find the perfect solution for fitting and decorating the homes. From surveys to furnishing plans and 3D simulations, our designers provide our clients all the needed information for completing the work.

DL: How long does it take you to finalize a design project?

MV : In answering this question, I am going to relate to one of my projects, "Brooklyn Luxury" , awarded with silver in the "Luxury Design Category", it was created in 6 months. How strange as it may seem, I am inspired to create only when I am in an organized environment. I like when everything is in its place, I start my work activity by making sure everything is where it should be.

DL: When you have a new design project, where do you start?

MV : I pay special attention to efficient space planning stage. I put extra emphasis on ergonomics and functionalism.

DL: What is your life motto as a designer?

MV : Every project I created is unique and different from all others. I don't have a design style which represents me, though I wish I had, but the footprint of over 250 beneficiaries with different requirements and 253 projects in 14 years of activity has taught me to be diverse. My projects are my clients. They find themselves in the designs I created for them.

DL: What is the role of technology when you design?

MV : I am a contemporary designer, I implement the latest technologies in the process of creating my projects. They are drawn in computer graphic programs, the results are viewed in 3D, and in the last 3 years, all our projects are presented in a VR 360 panoramic tour. We recently have started implementing AR technology. This gives our clients a clear picture of the design project. For designers, this way is a more accurate manner of expressing themselves.

DL: What kind of design software and equipment do you use in your work?

MV : I am a contemporary designer, I implement the latest technologies in the process of creating my projects. They are drawn in computer graphic programs, the results are viewed in 3D, and in the last 3 years, all our projects are presented in a VR 360 panoramic tour. We recently have started implementing AR technology. This gives our clients a clear picture of the design project. For designers, this way is a more accurate manner of expressing themselves.

DL: What is the role of the color, materials and ambient in design?

MV : I believe that any material is beautiful when you know how to show its value. The scenography and marketing knowledge combined with design talent can amaze you visually. Materials are the words that we designers express ourselves with. I don't have a favorite word.

DL: What do you wish people to ask about your design?

MV : My projects are the people and their positive emotions experienced in the houses I design. For me, a successful project is when the client is satisfied with the result.

DL: When you were a little child, was it obvious that you would become a great designer?

MV : I come from a family of artists, my father is a traditional craftsman in artistic wood processing in the Republic of Moldova. My mother is also passionate about making and decorating wooden items while my close relatives are painters and musicians. I knew what beauty was from a young age. Because I was always the first at artistic activities in school, I was seen as “A man of art", I had no other choice. Willingly and encouraged by everyone, I continued to study interior design because I was motivated in this direction.

DL: Please tell us anything you wish your fans to know about you, your design and anything else?

MV : In an interior design project, what is the best investment? I'm passionate about technology. I may not know the latest news in politics but I definitely know things like the latest type of processor presented by "Intel" or the newest technologies for a smart home. I tend to implement everything I know in my projects, I recommend this investment. However, in a design project, what really matters is the lighting system. Where would you like to escape? Why? I am a sociable person, I like to be where there is a lot of life and action, I only escape for a short recreation or to spend more time with my family. I feel good where there are people, they inspire me. This is the reason why I chose to expand my studio in New York. How important are accessories in your projects? It depends on the goal I am pursuing but for sure their absence or presence certainly helps me to convey the exact message of the design concept Who are some of your clients? My style revolves around luxurious projects, in which I implement the latest smart home technologies. My clients are mostly business owners, investors, and people who put great emphasis on the value of the materials used in their homes - expensive ones. Which aspects of a design do you focus more during designing? Usually I tend to be overly organized being pretentious and favouring comfort. This influences my approach in design, I will pay more attention to each interior’s ergonomics and then aesthetics. I tend towards simplistic interiors that offer a note of luxury. The most minimalist and modern interior created by me will definitely have a luxurious character. Designing can sometimes be a really time consuming task, how do you manage your time? One of my favorite testimonials from my clients is "responsible and organized designer". I consider that time is the most precious, I tend to use it as effectively as possible and fortunately I manage to do so. This is proved by the projects' short timeframe and meeting deadlines.
