LEGENDARY INTERVIEW

Design Legends ("DL") had the distinct honour to interview legendary designer Li Chen Peng ("LCP") for their original perspective and innovative approach to design as well as their creative lifestyle, we are very pleased to share our interview with our distinguished readers.

DL: Could you please tell us a bit about your design background and education?

LCP : I majored in photography art when I was in college. After graduation, I became a professional photographer and then returned to the family business to participate in sculpture and art. Because my family has been engaged in sculpture for 45 years in Taiwan, it has indeed had many important influences on my creation in the field of design and art.

DL: What motivates you to design in general, why did you become a designer?

LCP : Design is a challenge to my imagination and creativity. In the design work, I learned how to pursue the realization of ideas. After I became a lighting and installation art designer, many pictures in my mind can be presented in real life, and exchange ideas with viewers, for me, this is a very meaningful thing.

DL: Did you choose to become a designer, or you were forced to become one?

LCP : No one can stop the world from being full of imagination, and when you choose to become a professional designer, you can turn your imagination into a force that will change the world. I ’m glad I chose to be a designer 20 years ago, and it also changed my life a lot.

DL: What do you design, what type of designs do you wish to design more of?

LCP : I hope to pursue the way of designing narrative ideas, expressing emotions for human society in the works, especially in the application design of integrated media of light and modeling, which is the work I want to try further.

DL: What should young designers do to become a design legend like you?

LCP : I must say modestly that I am not a truly legendary designer, but I believe that every designer who truly becomes a legend in the design world is full of discussion and dialogue of ideas in their works, and they all have very outstanding skills so that the appearance of the work can be achieved. I hope that young designers can also learn to improve professional skills and maintain a passion for design work until they realize their dreams.

DL: What distinguishes between a good designer and a great designer?

LCP : I think the most difference part is "achieving" and "surpassing". Maybe achieving can complete the work, but I believe that surpassing can enhance the meaning of the design itself, this will be a worthy achievement for every designer.

DL: What makes a good design a really good design, how do you evaluate good design?

LCP : Good design should be able to move people's hearts, and the end users should define the final achievements and values of the design and generate mutual responses. If it can be done, for me, I would say that this is definitely a good design work.

DL: What is the value of good design? Why should everyone invest in good design?

LCP : A good design can transcend the isolation of language, race and culture and become a common method of communication, this is very valuable! Investing in good design is equivalent to investing in an imagination without borders, seeing those wonderful things in the process of practice happen that will make people have a positive way of life.

DL: What would you design and who would you design for if you had the time?

LCP : I hope to devote myself to the design work of promoting Chinese traditional art, and hope that more people with the same background as me can get more benefits through my design.
